Amazing drive and great deal before price doubled

I have 3 of these drives and I love them. They are so far very reliable and very fast. I was going to order two more today, I added them to my cart yesterday, and apparently Best Buy has since doubled the price to three hundred bucks. So much for that. Unfortunately I'll have to find something to get instead. If you can get this drive for a hundred sixty bucks like it was before, I'd jump on it if I were you, they are worth every penny.

    Large capacity external HD

Why do you need an 8TB hard drive? Why not? Files are huge these days, and having a huge drive for storage or backup is great. This one has worked without issues for 4 years now. Sometimes it does get loud but that’s normal for a spinning drive. If you want speed go with an external SSD.

    Noisey, Intellipark 8 seconds

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

According to WD, The 8TB or greater are noisy during seeks. And yes they are annoyingly noisy. They also have Intellipark on and set to 8s, it can not be changed (even with their older tools). This causes the heads to park all the time and causes the load/unload cycle to spike in normal operation. This will cause the drive to fail early as it only has a limited load/unload cycle limit, and also poor performance as you need to wait for the disk to spin-up constantly. WD recommendation to me was to buy one of their other drives, this is only meant for occasional storage on an operating systems / applications that do not read or write to the drive often. WD does not disclose the park feature anywhere except via technical support email system. They took 12 days to respond via their technical support email system, this coupled with Best Buys extremely short return policy of 14 days, makes these non-returnable for me.

    Not a RED drive inside

I bought this drive after checking several reviews that it had red drive inside. My did not came with red drive. Its a simple white lable. The drive still shows 256mb cache, so it's probably a good drive.

Best 8TB drive on the market

I'm very happy with my purchase. This product has 8TB WD Red drive inside, which is known to be great quality and NAS-ready. I got the drive manufactured in Thailand, it has 256MB cache, better than the older model with 128MB cache. It's a bit noisy when spinning up, but it doesn't bother me.

WD are highly reliable drives. I use them for my externals and NAS Storage systems. I have in the past used Seagate and others and have had problems. I must protect my data I am a wedding photographer and the photos are vital for my clients and cannot be replaced. WD has been reliable 100%

    Good value when on sale

I was looking for a large capacity external USB drive to backup a NAS device, rather than juggling several smaller capacity drives. This works great and fit my needs and budget with a 40% off sale. As a bonus, this has a Red NAS drive inside, rather than a traditional desktop drive.

    Full of WD Red Drives!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought two of these on sale, just for the drives inside, when I opened them up (or shucked them), I found two 8TB WD Red drives, at the sale price these can't be beat. I am going to use them in a new NAS system, and I will likely throw an older, smaller drive back into one of the enclosures. I did some testing before cracking them open, and the transfer speeds, over USB 3, were faster than any other device that I have, so not only will the drives live on, but so will the enclosures! Both devices are manufactured in Thailand, and contained 8TB WD Red NAS drives (256MB Cache).

    Very Large Size

Simple to use very large external hard drive. Access speed is somewhat sluggish compared to currently available smaller drives but if you need lots of room this is the drive to buy. Best for storing backups, or infrequently needed files, for a very attractive price.

Great hard drive. I use it to store media files for my plex server over my network and back up my computer. With 8TB, I am long away from running out of space.

it is white label drive inside - put it inside Synology - so far no problem. not a lot of noise, not that fast. Hopefully it will last longer than Seagate external.

    Great size device on sale

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I managed to snag an 8TB on sale for 130$ over the weekend. I had been looking at a 4TB for not much cheaper and decide to go with the 8TB. This is being used as external storage on the Xbox one s. It was very easy to use the storage device with the Xbox. It does make some noise and is about the size of a decent sized book. The noise does not bother me and I have the device hidden behind the tv, so neither of these are an issue for me, but may be for others.

Compact Size but a bit noisy

It's compact size helps me save space next to my laptop. Perfectly does the job it needs to do for backing up files. Very easy to use. However, it tends to make noises compared to other hard drives I own.
