A good basic external HD. I formatted it to work with my Mac, and it only took 5 minutes from the time I opened the box to the time it was set up and ready to go. If you’re looking for a good, simple external HD at a great value, this is it!

Overall easy set up. I am still working on getting everything I want backed up. I have not found how to get Google photos to back up to the drive. But at this piont I am blaming myself. make sure the setting are set. mine was only backing up the os at first.

Out of the box, I formatted the drive to NTFS and set it up using the included backup software. I am using this drive to back up a 3TB and a 1TB internal HDD, and then my 256GB SSD Windows drive. I have a very nice/fast gaming PC with 6 USB 3.0 ports. Given the specs of my drives and this backup drive, I calculated that it should take less than 3 hours to backup ~4TB. Well the process was VERY slow. I tried several USB ports, and landed on one of them directly on the mobo so there was no question that I should be getting the best connection. It took about 30 hours for the full transfer. I backed up each drive individually with no difference in speed. I backed up the biggest drive over night (~2.5TB of mostly movies/shows), and when I woke up, the drive was very hot. I don't think overheating is an underlying issue with this drive, but something is clearly struggling in the transfer process. I tested my ports/speeds by transfering ~80GB of music to a USB 3.0 120GB flash drive and it only took a few minutes.
Given that the warranty is decent on this drive and it isn't storing any critical information, I will play around with it and make sure that there is no issue on my end. I will update this review if I discover the issue or need to end up returning/exchanging this drive, I have a suspicion that the WD backup software might be the bottleneck so my next step is to format all that hard work and try the transfer again with no software, and then again with a trusted program after I do some research.

Amazing deal - included WD Red 8TB
-- Completely Shuckable - I didn't have tension screwdriver either, but after removing from the case, those 4 screws on the side can actually be twisted by hand with a slight grip. I just grabbed some pliers and with minimal torgue twisted em. I did the last 2 with just my hand. Very simple.

Bought this for my xbox one. Specifically for the upcoming xbox one x and the 4k assets that it will bring for certain games. This 8TB version is definitely enough storage for all my games. So far I have 40 games installed (not all big file sizes tho) and only used up a little over 1TB. I highly recommend getting this hard drive.

Really great way to add capacity without having to deal with opening the computer. Works great and having actual power adapter means you aren't working your power supply to death.

I've been running a Plex server on my computer for a few years now, and I've collected a considerable media library to support it. However being the type that likes to keep an archive of my favorite tv shows and movies, storage space can disappear quite rapidly. I'd have a 2TB and 2x4TB internal drives, plus a 4TB and an 8TB external drives for 22TB total space. It wasn't enough.
Fortunately I found this drive, along with a 12TB one on sale and got both. Now I have 42TB of storage space. I think I'll be good for a while.
The only downside I've found on these drives, is that they like to go to sleep, so often as I'm accessing the media, there can be a little lag getting it to open up (thus my deduction of 1 star), but once it does it works fine.
Overall the transfer speeds are adequate. I haven't heard any concerning noise coming out of it. The previous WD MyBook 8TB drive is still going strong after almost a decade, so I expect these new ones to last just as long.

I bought this to store all my HD video contents as well as back up data files. The unit worked reasonably well. I don't have it powered on all the time so I'm not really stressing it. Setting up was quick and easy. Transfer speed was reasonably fast. I wish the unit was a little bit slimmer but I can understand the potential thermal issues that can be experienced (perhaps they can use some metal in the housing to conduct some heat away?). Overall, it's a good backup disk to have but the size is big.

This 8 TB drive allowed me to backup all of the data from 5 individual external hard drives! My recommendation to everyone if to have more than one backup of anything important because an external hard drive- like your computer's internal drive- can fail.

For use with windows and iOS. To copy files off other HDs. Formatted the 1st drive, but the drive would not be recognized by either the iMac or pc (iOS and windows disk utility would recognize but I was unable to get the drive active). Returned, no questions asked. Second drive works well

Great drive for Mac Time Machine backup - reformat for Mac using Disk Utility. Really good value for 8TB! Quieter and better value than the other WD 8TB.

I bought this external hard drive to back up my desktop and preserve thousands of photos. The device was super easy to set up and so far has performed flawlessly. It's also quiet when running. So far so great!
