Not much to say about this one. It's a Western Digital external drive. It is still kicking. WD makes the best!

If you simply looking for a drive to manually transfer files from your computer to the drive for backup you should be okay. But if you want automatic backup and you are not tech oriented you are going to have a hard time getting this drive setup. It comes with NO user manual in the box. The tiny foldout pamphlet that is included (with print sop small I could barely read it with a 6X magnifier and my reading glasses) has a URL to a page that SUPPOSEDLY has a manual but it does NOT! A quick Google search turned up an online PDF manual that I downloaded. This was not much help however, because it had instructions for software that is supposed to be on the drive but is NOT! The manual tells you how to setup WD software but in reality you are going to be using Acronis True Image For Western Digital software. I had to jump through several hoops to figure out how to find it for download and then find a manual for using this software with this drive. Much more difficult and confusing than it needs to be. After several hours I finally got it all setup and it now runs my backup scheme on my schedule. And it does so in the background without slowing my PC down at all, so bonus points for that. Western Digital used to be a leader in the field of digital drives and storage but sadly this is not the case anymore. If you are looking for a simple drive to just manually backup files and folders there are cheaper alternatives out there. If you have more technical needs like automated backups on a schedule there are products out there that are easier to configure and won't cause you to have to make multiple Google searches to find everything you need. Sorry Western Digital, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND this product.

It's a Western Digital device... what else can I say? I have WD external hard drives that date back before the turn of the century that still work today. I have never owned any WD hard drive that caused me any heartache OR made me wish I never bought it in the first place. I have never had to return a WD hard drive for any reason. * * * I might have been lucky so far, and probably jinxing myself with this review, but I completely trust WD to sell me a quality device that fits its advertising and that will serve me well for years. * * * Your mileage may vary...

Great price for an 8TB drive. I use it solely for backup purposes and it is not actively plugged into anything. Regardless It is sturdy and easy to use.

Large Storage at a Reasonable Price When on Sale

Purchased the product when it went on sale. Definitely worth a buy for backups and saving files away from your computer. It comes formatted for Windows, but requires reformatting for MAC OS use. It went on sale for $129.99 the week before Black Friday, but I was unable to get it since it sold out. Luckily, it went on sale during the winter break sale for $139.99 and purchased right away. It comes with some Western Digital software in the hard drive. If you use hard drive software such as Crystal Disk Info, you can find the serial number and search the type of drive. It is true that these drives are red WD NAS drives. For the price it is worth it since the bare desktop drives cost more. I may consider purchasing another one when it goes on sale again since it is a large amount of space. It uses USB 3.0 and an AC adapter. It has vents on the top, bottom, and back for releasing heat. The only main issue with this external drive is the dissipation of heat. There isn't a fan, therefore, the drive can get pretty hot after long use. Just use hard drive software to monitor the heat. Also when laying down the hard drive, make sure the usb and power connections are in the direction away or top side (left) away from the surface it is laying on since the hard drive sits close to one side of the case and kind of hangs since one side of the drive seems to be only secured, which is the connection side.

Picked up the drive on a black friday sale price of $150 and was pleasantly surprised to find a Red NAS drive inside (typically costs around $250). Added it to my storage array and is humming along happily.

Bought this because of what drives are inside and that they cost less than just buying the bare drive. Have been using it as is connected to my router to store videos and pictures and has worked perfectly!

EasyStore 8TB - Easy Choice for Mac

After years of using other external hard drives (Seagate, LaCie, OWC builds, even other Western Digital) this has become the most reliable backup drive we have used so far. It reformatted for Mac easily, mounts always from the attached drive or anyone from our local network and has huge storage for what stunned me as a low cost of $159 when I purchased it. (Price seems to vary as I went back within a week and it was over $259 again but even at full cost is a great deal.)

I purchased four of these drives to replace some old Seagate models in a NAS. I'd done a fair amount of research, but nonetheless I wasn't expecting to get the models I ended up with. It seems WD has been using a new model: WD80EDAZ-11TA3A0 which is what I received in all four drives. This appears to be a white label WD Red but could also be a rebrand from their Hitachi acquisition, as these models are air-filled instead of utilizing helium as would be expected. The new DCM on these boxes is: NGBPWCP As for performance, the drives are running much better than anticipated and despite the warnings online I have yet to see temperatures anywhere above 45c.
