I have always bought this hard drive and haven't had any complaints yet... In the past, I started with 1 TB. After getting few of the 1 TB ones, I bought 3 TB... but needed more... so when I saw this one go down in price (same as the price i paid for my 3TB couple of years ago :) ), I had to get this..

Pros: NO ENCLOSURE-BASED ENCRYPTION, good drive for shucking, very good sequential throughput for 5400 RPM, visually appealing, absurdly good price per GB when on sale. CONS: Non-configurable power save mode in enclosure, drive takes forever to wake from power saving mode, can't run S.M.A.R.T. diags in enclosure because power save mode aborts the diagnostic test, enclosure is a real pain to shuck until you're on your 3rd/4th one and get the hang of it. OTHER COMMENTS: Works great in the enclosure OR shucked, so there's nothing at all to complain about. The /r/DataHoarder subreddit swears by these drives for building bigger storage computers than you'll ever see in your entire lifetime, and that's no accident. The lack of enclosure-based encryption is a huge plus; wish all WDs came like this!

Western Digital drives are definitely my primary options for storage. They are extremely reliable without breaking the bank. Inside this unit you will either find a WD Red or a "white" version, which apparently is a Red with an OEM tag.

Quick setup, easy to use, compact. I have recommend this to my friends.

While I have not have the hard drive long enough to speak to its reliability (really, no one has until a few years after using it), the value is there. There is a WD Red drive in this, which is the best possible for always on storage for things such as an NAS and storing your video/pictures/audio. At the price it was on sale, you can't pass it up -- or shouldn't.

Drive working as expected. Quiet. Reliable brand. Would buy again.

Works well for Plex media storage on my Mac mini. Read and write speeds are excellent.

It is the best for the money and you can put a password on it for security.

Got these drive to mine burst and they preform as well a you would expect a hard drive to. I have had them for a month or so and no failures and decent performance. Much better than the Seagate that uses the SMR technology. I looked on the forums and most likely there is a WD red drive inside.

So far, after transferring the bulk of my SSD to this external drive, I have complaints with the hardware. With such ample amount of space, I'm able to store all of my photos, videos, and games that don't require insanely fast load times onto this drive. I can't say I'm unhappy whatsoever with the purchase.

Works great so far with either the USB hookup or even better after shucking the drive out of the enclosure. Will fit perfectly into a NAS or PC with a little elbow grease. Search for the DataHoarder sub on Reddit to find guides on how to make the best of your new drive!

I have liked the backup software that is included with the Western Digital unit. (much better than the software included in the Seagate unit)

So far it has been a good buy and works well, i had a nas drive fail and had to use this as a backup

WDs are always reliable and have different storage devices with them serving specific purposes! This one in particular serves my need as a universal backup for my desktop and my macbook. I've learned a lesson once losing all my data. So now, I backup my backup from the backup of the backup I had from my original backup of my data!! All on WD!!! Kudos!!!
