I purchased this sweater digital drive to back up my NAS. It does exactly what I expect, plug into my NAS via USB, it finds it and I can backup my data. The 8TB allows me to make multiple versions of backup. Now I can sleep soundly knowing 20 years of photos, music etc are backed up.

This hard drive works well. I bought it for my MacBook so if you are buying for your MacBook you will need to reformat. This isn't too hard, but you will need to know what you are doing.

Best Buy sells two types of these WD 8TB USB 3.0 drives. This is a review of the more expensive one which I believe uses a WD Red drive. I am using this drive with a Windows 7 Pro system and the drive was recognized with no problems. I'm using it mainly for archiving large video files and the file transfer speed is nearly as fast as a hard drive connected through a SATA cable. The drive comes pre-formatted with an NTFS file system, so you don't have to format it; it's ready to go out of the box. It does come with software to facilitate using it as a backup drive but I haven't found a need for it. Unfortunately the drive does not have a power switch so you can't turn it off if you only need it for a few minutes and decide to eject the USB 3.0 device. I've been using it for about 3 months and have written about 2TB of data to it with no problems. Also, Best Buy usually has this item on sale so I would recommend checking their website regularly to get a good price.

After having tried another external drive that I simply could not get to work at all, I purchased this one after returning the first. This drive is easy to use, and makes large backups very quickly through a USB-3 port. I am very pleased with it.

I use Western Digital external drives to back up family pc's as well as cell phone pictures and video's. The USB 3.0 interface is very fast and with 8 TB of capacity you have lots of storage options. Best Buy consistently has the best pricing for this product, you can't go wrong!

WD Red NAS drive with 256MB cache inside

Don't bother with WD's software (other than Drive Utilities for adjusting the sleep timer). Internal drive (in my case) is a WD Red NAS drive with 256MB cache, so reliability should be good; wel'll see. Reasonably fast for a hard drive. Stays fairly cool. Drive has been plenty quiet.

I use a pair of these as additional external backups for my RAID Array in my desktop media server. I get good transfer rates and have had much better experience with reliability than previous generations of external drives which seemed to develop bad sectors regularly.

Bought this to store large files and backup my Mac. Dependable, easy to use, and decent write speeds. Does everything I ask of it and it does them well. Free software included that helps save power and life. Plus they are almost always on sale at Best Buy

I have not been able to schedule a back up routine on this one yet . . . I had a similar one that I was able to set up a back up routine, however that one went bad within 14 months so had to replace it . . . Waiting for the Geeks to come out to help me get this on a back up schedule . . . Until I get it on a schedule I am not able to rate it for anything . . .

I typically used these drive (since I found they are usually WD Red or White label Red drives) for my synology NAS. I have 4 running now without issue. I use the WD Diag to fully scan each disk and so far each has been without issue.

I bought this external hard drive during an emergency when my laptop was beginning to fail and I wanted to back up my photos. This unit was plug n play and immediately backed up everything on my laptop. Plenty of room left to put on additional items.
