Love this drive & on sales it's even better. Works great & now I can have them mirror each other. Haven't shucked one yet but may since the drive inside costs more normally than this external drive. Very happy & would buy it/them again........might the next time they go on sale.

Picked this up while it was on sale to add as an external storage device to my NAS. I'm primarily using this for video streaming through the NAS and have been completely satisfied with the performance of this drive. Great bang for the buck, especially if you can find it on sale.

This was the first one I bought for my son. He already owned one. Bought another one in 2020. He shoots and edits a lot of video so needs a large amount of storage space. He's happy with the three that he owns.

Got this external hard drive when it was on sale. Great price for a large amount of storage. It's not the quickest but but it's 8TB. I love it. I've been successful with WD. Seagate is the only drive that failed me within a couple of years without alot of usage. WD is more reliable.

Bought this to replacing an internal drive that was failing. Can be a pain to open the case, but once shucked easily goes into your pc

Tried the 10TB to only realize that it would not take anything above 8tb and got this for my console instead. So easy to set up and not too slow for updates and way cheaper than an SSD. Definitely recommend!

My household includes one member who is an avid photographer and another with a massive mp3 collection. I was running out of hard drive space for backups. This 8tb drive provided the space I needed to safely store backup system images for 10 different computers in my home. Only negative is the USB interface is slower than I expected during large file transfers. There is no power on/off switch.

I was able to easily disassemble and remove the drive so I could install it as an internal drive on my desktop. Much cheaper than buying the same hard drive as a bare drive.

This hard drive works well. I bought it for my MacBook so if you are buying for your MacBook you will need to reformat. This isn't too hard, but you will need to know what you are doing.

I purchased this sweater digital drive to back up my NAS. It does exactly what I expect, plug into my NAS via USB, it finds it and I can backup my data. The 8TB allows me to make multiple versions of backup. Now I can sleep soundly knowing 20 years of photos, music etc are backed up.

Best Buy sells two types of these WD 8TB USB 3.0 drives. This is a review of the more expensive one which I believe uses a WD Red drive. I am using this drive with a Windows 7 Pro system and the drive was recognized with no problems. I'm using it mainly for archiving large video files and the file transfer speed is nearly as fast as a hard drive connected through a SATA cable. The drive comes pre-formatted with an NTFS file system, so you don't have to format it; it's ready to go out of the box. It does come with software to facilitate using it as a backup drive but I haven't found a need for it. Unfortunately the drive does not have a power switch so you can't turn it off if you only need it for a few minutes and decide to eject the USB 3.0 device. I've been using it for about 3 months and have written about 2TB of data to it with no problems. Also, Best Buy usually has this item on sale so I would recommend checking their website regularly to get a good price.

Good Hard Drive For NAS Array

As I recall, WD still puts their red-series hard drives in these external enclosures and uses non-SMR for sizes above 6TB. If you want to get a replacement drive for a NAS or just local RAID array, definitely make sure you don’t get an SMR drive. They are terrible performers in RAID arrays and will only cause you issues. Purchasing these 8+ TB external hard drives is one of the most economical ways to get your hands on some of Western Digital’s best NAS and RAID drives. If you would like to purchase this hard drive to replace a drive in an existing array, fear not, for it uses CMR and will be fine for really any of your uses. If you plan to use this as an external drive, you should be fine regardless of the size you purchase since the difference between CMR and SMR should be negligible when the drive is used on its own.

Not much I can say, it's a HD and it works. Note that this is the Best Buy exclusive model, which has a shorter warranty (but should also have a lower cost). A lot of people open these up and basically get an internal hard drive, technically voiding the warranty anyway.

WD Red NAS drive with 256MB cache inside

Don't bother with WD's software (other than Drive Utilities for adjusting the sleep timer). Internal drive (in my case) is a WD Red NAS drive with 256MB cache, so reliability should be good; wel'll see. Reasonably fast for a hard drive. Stays fairly cool. Drive has been plenty quiet.
