I got this hard drive a while back and it worked great for a long time. I ended up getting a new computer and it wasn't working with my new computer for some reason so I gave up for about 5 months. I decided to try again and I ended up finding a way to get it to work, and it works amazing!

Tremendous capacity - huge transfers = huge times

Using a MacBook Pro (8GB ram): I am now moving all files/folders from my "WD My Passport for Mac 3TB." The DTR (data transfer rate) is roughly 2GB/minute. Many hours! On Macs use WD Drive Utilities to zap the pre-installed PC software or your transfers will be blocked "Read-Only" notices. I also raised the unit up by using spacers underneath, without blocking the vents, which increased cooling. Great HD value, BestBuy nailed the specs and the price point. Definitely recommend!

better drive than the cheap plastic enclosure

WD easystore the 8tb WD RED NAS drive with 256 mb cache hiding inside this flimsy black enclosure. good value for 8tb. make sure to get the one made in Thailand because the one from china only has 128 mb cache. the country origin is on the bottom of the box. WD drives have always been reliable for me.

I worry about trusting these drives with my data

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I picked up two of these drives. Noise levels are reasonable, and I am happy with the transfer speeds (read: 154 MB/s; write:216 MB/s on my machine). BUT, they are having problems with the Windows built-in chkdsk utility. Typically, a surface scan using chkdsk takes 15-20 hours for a drive this size. Both of my Easystore drives wanted 140 hours (nearly 10x as long). The big problem is that chkdsk is what Windows uses to fix the disk and recover your data if something happens to the drive (e.g., a sudden power outage, someone trips over the cord, ...). If chkdsk isn't working properly, how can I recover my data if something like that happens? I've contacted WD support. They responded, but did not seem to think this was a problem worth solving. (Apparently, saying the drive is "Windows 10 compatible" is a marketing gimmick, not a promise.) I'm still trying to decide if I will keep these drives or return them to BB.

No Lock Security Support + Poor Description!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've purchased several WD External Hard Drives over the years. Good products, with security lock as basic feature... After buying this item I learn that it's NOT SUPPORTED BY WD SECURITY APP! WHY IS THIS NOT POINTED OUT IN BB PRODUCT INFO? I had to dig up the info on the WD website... Ironically "Keep data safe on this Western Digital hard drive." is the lead line for the Best Buy product description!

    nice!

uses a WD red drive, which can be re-purposed for RAID pretty easily. aside from that, there aren't any other benefits to buying this product instead of a "my book" with a blue drive inside. so if you miss out on this and don'tr use RAID, it's no big deal

    White label Drive 256MB Cache

Bought it when the price dropped to $150. Shucked it and am running it in my desktop as a data drive. This unit has a WD White label with 256MB cache., others report a Red label. It's probably the luck of the draw.

    Fast but lost connection accasionally

This disk is fast enough in reading/writing for daily usage. The only complain I have is that sometimes it gets lost while physically connected after my computer gets back from sleep. Overall, I'm happy with it. I recommend buying only when it's on sale though.

Disk fails to reformat for Mac

    Posted .

This is the second WD Easystore 8TB hard drive that I purchased in two days. Both upon initial reformatting the drives failed due to a Error. No Fix was found By the Support techs at WD. The technicians even related into my computer and tried to fix it but were unable to. The only suggestion was to exchange the drive for a new because the drive may be faulty.

Junk.. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME

If you have a Mac DO NOT buy this junk. I have never experienced problems with a hard drive like this one. It says you can download a driver to use wit Mac, but I assure you, you can not. This is the most garbage product I’ve ever bought. I should bill WD a few hours labor plus fuel. I can’t believe I have to go right back to best buy and try to return it the very next day. DONT WALK.. RUN away from this trash!!!!! It’s a HUGE fail for WD. Do NOT fall for that sale price. There is a reason it’s only $139. Lesson learned.

Works, but difficult to set up

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The hard drive seems to work now, but I had to restart my computer multiple times, call support twice, look up forums online, and do several other things to get it going. I didn't expect an hour of troubleshooting to use a "Easystore Plug & Play" external drive. Note: When you call customer service, the menu will tell you they do not provide phone support. Just wait for 20-30 seconds and then it will offer to connect to support. Kind of annoying...hopefully not on purpose.

    Hitachi! Too much vibration.

Sisoft Sandra reports: Model : WD easystore 25FB Manufacturer : Hitachi Model : WDC WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 search of the model number shows this to be a WD RED drive. Immediately I noticed this doesn't sound like a WD drive during the quick test in WD Drive utilities. Compared to my collection of WD Mybook 5TB drives, this drive has at least 3 times as much vibration, and resonates on my bookshelf and desk. I will probably return it. I generally love WD drives, but this doesn't seem to be a WD drive!

Brought this home and came out of the box bricked. I can’t believe this product is highly rated. I was unlucky or they delete negative reviews but buyer beware. I’ll be returning this to the store and getting another brand, never to buy this one again.

Don't waste your money-I can't tell you how to keep your data safe when this one also died and I can't seem to retrieve it...when your backup dies-it's not good. Beware of this one.
