The external 8TB drive itself is great! My experience with Western Digital left me wondering how they ever made it in business. How so? There are no actual directions of any sort with their product so off to the WD website where it appears that you have access to 3 things -- drive utilities, drive "software", and what I was after, a backup utility. What happens next is classic -- the backup software is labelled "No longer supported, use this other one (not by WD)," then the software packaged for the drive has some features and functions -- none having anything to do with this particular model. I ended up simply prepping and formatting the unit with Windows and running a 3rd party backup application. Much looking at the WD website gave me the distinct impression that this company has no clue about customers or how to package effective support material for their products -- there are various cute and clever names attached to one series or another of their products and that's about it. I left the site thankful that they have an engineering department that is on top of the game -- their storage devices are the best and glad that I don't need any exposure to the rest of the company -- what a disaster (imho).

Great hard Drive to keep a bunch of pictures and backups.

Excellent alternative when you have "a couple of years" of files in your work computer and now you are retiring. Operation was easy and fast.

This external drive comes with a WD NAS Red 256MB cache drive that retails for 249$ by itself. When on sale u can grab this external for 149$ or less which makes it a steal. Videos online show you how to use this drive in a NAS if you want. Works great as an usb 3 external. Get almost 200MB\S when transferring large files, works great. Very quiet
