Bang for your buck

When on sale u can grab this external for 149$ or less which makes it a steal. Videos online show you how to use this drive in a NAS if you want. Works great as an usb 3 external. Get almost 200MB\S when transferring large files, works great. Very quiet

Good high volume archive storage

The world is moving to SSD (Like me) but this is 8TB and if I wanted that in an SSD I would need a 3rd mortgage. I have 4 of these and I use them for storage. Not for constant real time access. They can be attached and always "on", but if you don't do a file access for a few minutes the platters stop spinning and it takes ~15 seconds to "wake up." That is FOREVER so I avoid it. That Sleeping may also be the software controls on my computer rather than the drive itself, but it is still a real time lag. There are work arounds (batch files etc) to keep your drive "live", but they would seem to tax the turn tables. So, I often copy the section I am working with to a local SSD drive, make my edits and then save back to this kind of spinning disc archive.

No excuse not to backup

I have been using WD usb 2 and 3 hard drives for many years and they have been great. No failures no problems and no reasons not to have a 2nd set of those precious photos and videos.
