I bought this external drive because the spec said: Maximum Data Transfer Rate 5000 megabytes per second. When I copy files to this external drive. The average transfer rate is only about 10 MB per second.

Bought this to backup WD MyCloud. Does not backup, WD support is very poor. They told me on different occasions, they will call back after talking to support with more technical knowledge. They never call back. When calling no them again, they still don't know the problem.

Does the Job, But Confusing Setup

The hard drive comes in a box. On the side, the contents are listed as: Portable Hard Drive USB 3.0 Cable WD Discovery Software with WD Backup and WD Drive Utilities Quick Install Guide When I opened the box, I discovered the hard drive and the cable, and a small card that listed the URL for WD support. There was no software or install guide. Needing installation instructions, I went online and found and downloaded the “easystore Portable Hard Drive User Manual” from the WD website. Under “Kit Contents”, it lists the same four items, but this time it clearly implies that the software is loaded on the hard drive and not a separate item. It also continues to list a Quick Install Guide as a separate item, but that item is not in the box. (Note: I found out later that the user manual is stored on the drive, but WD keeps it a secret.) The User Manual told me to plug in the drive. The manual describes three software applications: WD Discovery, WD Backup, and WD Drive Utilities. However, it does a poor job of explaining what each of these does and why I need them. To get started in Windows, the manual says to run “WD Discovery.exe” to install the software. You won’t find anything labeled “WD Discovery.exe”, but you will find something labeled “WD Discovery”. Click on it and things progress reasonably well, but you have to occasionally guess what the next step should be. The user interface/dashboard is primitive and barely informative. WD should spend some time developing something that is more elegant. WD Discovery contains nine third-party applications. The WD user manual says nothing about the apps, in fact it seems to put great distance between WD and the third-parties. At least you can hide the apps from view. I have yet to explore them. The drive worked well, once you figure out what the user manual is trying to tell you. WD should get a non-engineer to take a look at the user manual and see if the text can be converted into English. At the same time, try to coordinate the language on the package with the language in the user manual. Finally, an actual Quick Install Guide would be very useful – I never did find one.

This works great with the Tablo Dual Lite DVR!. Setup was so easy, I just plugged it into my Tablo. Tablo formatted the new drive in two minutes and then it was off and running! Can't wait to fill it with a lot of shows to watch.

Although we haven't used this one yet (Christmas present) this is our second one. We bought the first one several years ago & haven't had any issues with it.
