I found the use of this device was a little more complex than anticipated. While it is good to have cloud access I feel like using this device is a lite to cumbersome.

I've had to reset it several times because it doesn't recognize my pass word, I'll probably be returning it to the store. My older WD external hard drive was easier to use.

App is subpar. Very hard to understand where items are backed up to and who has access. NO cable connection. Must use your wifi. Runs loud. Wish I had not bought.

Will only use as additional back up does not function as a cloud to view content remotely.

It doesn't backup all your mobile pics if your mobile is running out of memory, it prompts to clear up some memory around 360mb to complete backup.

I returned this product after about a week. The data transfer speeds were extremely slow over WiFi and gigabit ethernet. It took overnight to load my photos library from my 2011 Macbook Pro. Afterward, it took several minutes to open the library. Scanning through the photos caused my MBP to freeze up for a couple minutes, at which point I forced a shutdown.

Super Slow backup even through the ethernet wiring it requires. Once your first time machine back up is done its fine but be prepared for a 48+ Hour Backup.

This will work locally as a hard drive. However, the email verification does not work. "error undefined" I did everything that support told me to do and still no results. I looked at WD forum and a lot of people had same problem. A lot of people returned it, as I will. I called WD repeatably and all I got was a fast busy signal. 3 hours of my life spent that I will not get back. So much for plug and play.

I gave one star to this item because i was able to return it to the store. I was on the phone with WD customer care then my internet provider, nothing worked. I got tired of working so hard and sounding incompetent, every time a called customer care. i am glad, if it works for some else, but i would not take a chance again.

    Great Network Drive, Better Price

I'm a sucker for these WD drives. I have a bunch of these on hand and tied into my home network for data backup. Yes, they can be a little slow, especially when transferring particularly large files to them. With that said, once it's there, it's there. The My Cloud products do feature improvements over the line they replaced: My Book Live. The only real complaint I have about the product is the color/finish. I hate it! It looks like cheap white plastic. The My Book Live products had a nice black matte casing which looked quite sleek. The new ones almost match the Nintendo Wii, in my opinion. For me, it's not that big of a deal, because we have all the drives housed in a separate room. The average user might actually prefer the new casing. The new graphics interface is a substantial improvement over the previous product line, and really does make it just about a simple as possible to manage the drive. With large capacities, Good power settings, an improved GUI and great price, I absolutely recommend this product.

There were no instructions in the box and I had to google to get hints at how to operate it. Their website was little help. It would not setup with name and password and could not access the dashboard. Spent 3 hours of wasted time and returned it.

I only had the cloud a few months s before it started blinking red. After all trouble shooting, the rep came to the conclusion that it had to be replaced. All those files I stored on there, not their problem. So I had to spend more to retrieve my files than I did on the storage.

Great NAS- But has performance problems.

    Posted .

I have been checking out small NAS units by both Seagate and Western Digital. I purchased the WD Cloud 4TB, and i generally like the unit; but it has some bugs/issues that drastically impact its performance. The unit itself performs well and has solid performance for a 1 drive NAS unit (most of the time). Initial setup is brainless. Many users performance issues with copying files. This has been generally due to a laptop or workstation on Wifi. Wifi is slower than wired, and performance will vary greatly depending on your implementation. Many customers mistakenly blame the unit, instead of their WiFi implementation. In my case, everything is hardwired via Cat6e running GigE. Initially performance was strong, but as i copied more files the system drastically slowed down. At it's worst, 10GB of data was going to take 2 hours to copy (compared to the 5 minutes or less it should). After extensive research online, and some mucking with the unit; I know what the problem is. Put simply, its added software that WD has to create thumbnails and index files on the unit. This software runs in the background and builds thumbnails and indexes for every file placed on the unit. If many files are placed on the unit at once, the onboard CPU and memory become overwhelmed with this activity. Until the index and thumbnails are completed, the unit responds poorly to all requests (including file copy). The unit will eventually complete its tasks, but depending on the number of files, this could take days to sort out. Not ideal when your trying to copy a large amount of data to it. As documented in the WD forums, there are ways to disable these activities, but it's complicated and should be only done by the tech savvy. I disabled both services on my unit, and the unit now operates at its full potential. I may or may not re-enable at a future date. If your non-tech savy, and have tons of data to copy; this unit may not be for you. The Seagate Central may be a less frustrating option (although it has a few shortfalls. Most notably, you can not set folder permissions). If your starting new, and slowly adding files; this unit will work for you well. If your tech savvy, then you know what you're getting into. The unit is superior to the seagate in feature set. It's this feature set that is also this units undoing....... Rating 3 Stars, due to the onboard software killing a good product.
