To begin, I am a Western Digital fan but that in no way clouds my opinion of this product. I am an Infrastructure Architect in the IT field working as a consultant. As a result of my job duties I am constantly travelling to various client sites and keeping track of documentation for the numerous projects I am implementing for these clients. This product allows me to maintain access to all of my working documentation, software and various other material needed to perform my duties regardless of where I am. The information is secure and always accessible when I need it. No more quick trips back home or to the corporate office to retrieve forgotten documents / information. I have not yet had a situation where the device was unavailable. Great work WD!

I was in need of a new external storage device, previously had a 500GB WD My Book which was about full, and came across this 4TB WD My Cloud on some special one day sale for $148.00 and couldn't pass it up as the storage capacity alone was worth well more than what I paid. Set up was easy for the most part, plug it in to the router and outlet, install the desktop software, and start transferring files. Phone setup was just as easy, add a device through the desk top application, download the WD My Cloud app on my phone, enter the 12 digit access code, and done. It took some time to transfer the 250+GB of music and pictures from my old drive to the My Cloud, but it was finished when I woke up and I was able to flawlessly stream my music to my phone on the way in to work. You also have the ability to grant friends and family access to a public folder or specific folders, as full access or read only. I would not have spent full price on this device, I believe currently to be at $220, simply because of budget constraints, but I do believe it is well worth it if you can afford it.

MyCloud is a Great Personal Cloud Product

MyCloud is a simple NAS (Network Access Storage) device to setup and use on home network and through the internet. I replaced my old IOMEGA (Levono) EZ NAS with the MyCloud and was surprised at all the additional functionality for access control, security, and availability. It took me about an hour to complete the installation for 14 family users that access the MyCloud from 4 different cities around the country. Technically, the disk has 4tb which is plenty for file sharing and sharing pictures and videos of the family. Although a little slow to 'wake up' when in sleep mode (hence the 4 stars instead of 5) its access and streaming speeds are excellent and meets all of our needs. The administration screen and functions are easy to understand and use. I highly recommend this especially at the price it goes for.

The product functions as indicated by the Best Buy adviser. The software installation was the usual nightmare designed by a committee of simian wannabees. The instructions on the website were incomplete, misleading, and downright wrong, but that's been true of Western Digital products since the 90s.

OMGsh, I cannot believe that I wasted so much time with that other drive. I purchased this device in December and until tonight I had so much trouble with E X T R E M E L Y slow speeds and connectivity issues. I couldn't setup as a back up drive because I wasn't sure it would stay connected. Speeds, holy smoke this thing is very fast. If you have problems with your drive, don't waste time trying to figure it out yourself... contact WD Support. They are top notch and extremely helpful. Highly recommend it now.

Although the manual (which you have to download) needs work, and I had to call tech-support for setup, the My Cloud works perfectly connected to my router. Tech-support stayed on the line with me for 44 minutes walking me through the setup onto 2 computers (Windows 7 and 8.1) with very clear instructions. The manual does not give you all of the proper steps in order. Following the manual, I was able to setup the My Cloud, but could not map it into My Computer. You have to download and install WD Discovery on each computer which the manual does not indicate. This download walks you through "discovering" the drive and you are able to map it. Afterwards the drive works flawlessly. The manual's issues is the only reason I gave this a "4".

    Great Concept, Poor Product

First: the MyCloud application is horrible. Very slow to upload items to the drive, also the screen resolution of the app looks like it was made on a computer 10 years ago. Also using the app, it is very slow to open photos/documents/movies. When streaming movies through the app, it some times quits loading the movie and thus the movie freezes. When trying to edit documents that were opened through the app, it fails to save any changes that were made even to a simple .txt file! Also using the app you can not do multiple select of files, wouldn't that be a VERY important feature in todays world where everyone does multiple selecting??? Who wants to load 1 file individually at a time when having 1000s of files? Second: I ended up mapping it as a network drive, however it seems some times the mapped drives disappear after awhile and thus needed to re-map them. Also it takes over 1 min through the mapped drive to even populate the list of items in the folder for me to see what is even on the drive! It is quicker to load things to the drive using drag and drop through the mapped drive. HOWEVER it still took about 4 days running nonstop to upload 1.5tb to the drive!! Sorry that is pretty pathetic. Tried transferring over wifi, lan, and usb; all the same slowness. (My router has nothing to do with these issues, it is a brand new, dual-band wireless n router with a 50mbps internet connection.)

    High Quality

I bought this for a backup drive primarily. Time Machine works flawlessly, and it works great with OS X Yosemite, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Vista Machines on my network. Transfer speeds were around 18-24 MB/s, good NAS speeds on my network with an Apple Airport Extreme base station and a gigabit switch. I returned this unit, however as it will not back itself up to Amazon S3, the only option it offered was Dropbox, which I would need to pay $15/month for a premium account. Nothing at all wrong with the drive or software, just didn't do a thing I wanted. I wound up going with the Seagate "Personal Cloud" 4TB unit which has built in S3 support.

Needed to centralize my families photo's and documents and didn't want to keep paying dropbox. This unit setup in under 5 minutes. Straightforward interface, helps if you have a limited knowledge of network admin. The interface on our phones is actually very nicely setup and organized. Everything backs up fast.

    Love MyCloud

I use the MyCloud mainly as a DLNA server in my house. I love that you can set up different accounts for different people; that way each person has their own private space within the MyCloud to store their files. The DLNA feature works great with our TVS (Samsung and LG). Over a wired gigabit connection, transfers are great! I prefer to do large transfers over gigabit because there is a BIG difference in the transfer speed vs wireless. We have converted our wireless network into a wired gigabit network and it just works GREAT with the MyCloud. I am not a big fan of the Mobile features of the MyCloud but then again I haven't quite figured out how to use the app.

    Great home NAS storage

We needed a common place at home to store photos and other files. Portable storage drives were full and you have to make the effort to attach them to the machine you are using and in the case of tablets and cell phones they don't work. So this NAS device looked like the solution. The WD My Cloud was easy to install and works with all the devices (laptops, tablets, phones android and iPhone) and you can access it from anywhere. I was a little concerned since the router I was hooking up to was not a gigabit router, but performance has been acceptable especially since my streaming use right now is minimal.

    Poor Product

I had one and it died 2 months after warantee. Then picked up a new one. It is NOT Compatible with Mac Book High Sierra os. WD software is faulty, music storage is poor, cannot build playlist, must play the album. No where near iTunes. The WD cloud software needs major updating. The unit is only good if u want to use it as a time machine under Apple. I already have an Apple airport capsule. Then I thought, why bother with this when I can use apples icloud, which always works in and away from home on either my Mac or Windows laptops. Plus Apple maintains the backups, and no maintenance on my part. You all know devices require constant maintenance ‘time consuming’. So WD blames Apple for high Sierra. Hmmmm. WD’s hardware seems good, but software and support needs a major overhaul. This cloud is slow, and NOT user friendly. For myself, I use my Mac Pro with an 2TB external drive for data, iTunes, photos under the Apple software, and have Apple cloud services, in addition to having the Apple capsule automatically backing up my drives.

Great Product and no speed issue

I read so many reviews of how painfully slow this device was. However, I connected it directly to a gigabit ethernet switch, which in turn is connected directly to my cable modem. My Macbook (15" Retina) was also plugged into my gigabit ethernet and the file transfer was amazingly fast. I did a full Time Machine back up (this took longer) but a straight drag and drop into folders was pretty darn quick. I debated getting the mirrored drive but I didn't think I really needed RAID 1. I have multiple drives and run backups in several different places. This is a great device and I'm extremely pleased.
