Poor file transfer performance - DO YOUR RESEARCH

Folks, please do your research before buying this product. Read user posts on the WD community forums. I've had this NAS for several weeks, spent 50+ hours of my personal time trying to address performance issues and I've been on 4 support calls with WD so far without a resolution. Many other users are experiencing the same problems. It is a function of how their Cloud/Mobile App support software works. It constantly scans the drive for file updates. When you copy large amounts of data to the drive the scanning kicks in automatically and consumes lots of CPU and Disk i/o resources rendering it unusable until the scanning completes. For 5-10+ GB file transfers this scanning can last for many hours. Had I known this I would not have purchased this product.

WD General Network Error 500. Not an easy setup!

I connected the WD MyCloud to my airport Time Capsule and it's been nothing but a headache. File transfer is very slow from the Mac and when trying to access the music player all I get is a "General Error 500". The music (all M4A's) play if I accessed through the file browser though. This behavior exhibits both on my local network and outside of it. I was really hoping and expecting this product and app to work but at this point I cannot recommend it.

    Slow over the internet

The configuration of more than one users is a hassle and upload/download speeds outside your home network are really slow and sometimes the transfer will freeze the whole computer. Also, I have tried to factory reset this thing 3 times and it won't do it. Not recommended to the average user

    STOP!! Don't do it!

To say this is the worst NAS device is an understatement! My dearly departed Mother who could type 95 wpm on an IBM Selectric moved data faster than this device. Not only is it dreadfully slow, there are difficulties allowing others to share folders via the app. I now have a red light which means a critical situation and there is no way to restore to factory defaults without accessing the dashboard -- which you can't access when the light is red! The native operating system is so slow it takes over 15 minutes to fully boot -- that's when it actually does boot. I've had nothing but a bad experience with this poorly designed device. I would highly recommend spending the money on an Apple Air Port or Time Capsule. I've had this device for 4 years and I'm done. This WD MyCloud is total junk, as is their documentation and online support.

Works well what we wanted. However setting the unit up was not easy and support was tough to find.

Failed in less than a year

Computer stopped recognizing the drive after around 11 months. I didn't want to return a unit with personal data if the disk was still working so I opened it up and verified I couldn't read or write to bare drive. You end up breaking the little plastic hooks in order to get into the flimsy plastic case so it is not returnable. Replaced with another system

WD Known Problem of Disconnecting From Network

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I would not recommend this product. I have had it for 6 months. Other than it being extremely slow due to processes running on the device (get ready for 1-2 weeks of continuous copy to migrate data onto it), it randomly disconnects from the network. I have updated the Bios to the latest and tried to research how to resolve the issue. It does not take long to find thousands of similar complaints online.

I purchased this product a few years back. Had to spend an entire day on the phone with a technician to get it set up to work. Then, I had to move, and have not been able to get it to work again.

Software updates increased speed for transferring data to drive, but then hard drive failed. May not back-ip to some Seagate hard drives. Would not repurchase. Would pay premium for Time Capsule next time.

    Noisy and slow

I do not recommend this product for backup. The hard drive is very slow even with a mac thunderbolt connection. The drive is constantly reading the disk and noisy. I tried the Seagate Wirelplus and considering going back to purchasing it. The GUI interface is much better on the WD version than Seagate's though giving it that extra star.

    Tech Support is no help

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Decent hard drive but I purchased it for the Sync function. It is suppose to sync your Doc files between two or more computers. 6 weeks ago I called their tech line to get help setting up the Sync Function. I have an open case # still, and have had terrible support. I have been told once or more times a week that my case has been escalated and I will be contacted in 24-48 hours. It has never happened. I call back 48-72-96 hr. it doesn't matter, no one has looked at my case since I hung up the last time. I got busy and waited 11 days before calling back today. Same story. A supervisor told me he would call me back in 2 hours, didn't happen. I have experienced bad tech support before, but WD doesn't even try. If you are hoping to use the Sync Function, buy something else. I will return this tomorrow. WD, never again.

I bought this because i wanted my own cloud service, I did not want to have to keep paying. The auto upload of pics from my phone sometimes worked. The drive however failed on me so I lost everything in the drive. Luckily I still have my google cloud and one drive, and my older seagate goflex.

    Not ready for prime time

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have been in the tech industry for a long time and seldom have I seen a new product have such a poor launch. To be fair, the goals for My Cloud were ambitious. Unfortunately, it appears that the product was not quite ready for prime time. Though the media reviews have largely been positive, trying to use this product outside of a lab environment has been very frustrating. Inconsistent network disconnects, wildly varying bandwidth rates, slow overall performance, inconsistent messaging and guidance from the tech support team, and a total lack of accountability and communication relative to these product issues on the part of Western Digital overall. Western Digital makes great hard drives. The performance of this software-based product is very poor and the company has yet to address critical performance and connection issues. I would not recommend My Cloud until basic product issues are fixed.

    NOT easy to setup

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This device is very disappointing because of the setup. I purchased this on 10/18 and still can't get it to work. Maybe I was mistaken on its normal functionality. I wanted it setup like my work where my laptop is drive "C" and our internal company wide hard drive is "M". If I want to save something to the "M" drive I just drag it over and if I want to open a file I open the "M" drive. I thought that this could be setup similarily but I guess not, or maybe it can but I can't seem to get past the initial setup. I have no use for remote or cloud access. I want to use it as an internal hard drive to my own network so either I can't figure it out or it can't function like that. So it sits and collects dust until I can pay someone to figure it out.

this is the slowest piece of JUNK I have used in a long time, its like 1980s slow! After numerous calls to WD, they still have no idea why this unit takes whole minutes just to transfer small files. WASTE OF MONEY, DO NOT BUY!!!

Very complicated and sync never works

Awful purchase, so sorry I bought this. I've wasted so much time trying to get it to work properly - even spent 90 minutes on phone with a great customer service person at WD getting the unit set up and answering my questions. But even now, none of the share folders actually sync. Always getting stuck, says pending - but never syncs the pending files. Backup takes forever - and I mean nearly a week for less than 100GB!!!! I'm going to try to return this if at all possible.

DO NOT BUY this drive. IT DOES NOT WORK. Customer Service is terrible. I have been on the phone for an hour. Does not speak English well enough to understand what I am saying. Did not assist in my issue. Keeps bringing up different help pages that have nothing to do with my question. Can not share folders from the drive. Unable to get a link to share the drive. Errors out overtime. Tried to reset my drive when I don't have a back up yet. DO NOT BUY.
