I bought this to replace my original that is no longer secure. I like the RAID option as my items are backed up twice. I have this in my fireproof safe with family photos, good alternative to paying for a cloud subscription.

Perfect for your first try at a home based network storage drive. Can upload anything from any pc on the network, and I even upload photos from my phone while not on the home network while out and about.

I bought this several weeks ago and am still working on trying toget it up and running with my mac mini and eventually plex. The WD site has you thinking that in mere minutes a dashboard will show up and you are off and running. Not the case and there are many similar experiences with Mac users. I will try a few more times to as it may be something simple. But WD is skips a compentent manual and just gives you a poker card sized paper of "Quick Install". It aint a quick install WD for Macs.

    Bad User Experience, Borderline Un-Usable

I can't speak to the reliability of the drives yet as I've only just gotten the device, but the usability is VERY bad. It will not recognize an external SSD plugged in via USB. It only sporadically will allow connection via the network folder on Mac OS. Part way through transferring files the network connection will drop and will have to manually start transfer again. MyCloud is a nightmare. The whole experience has been very bad, and I'm an engineer with considerable computer experience. I can't imagine how frustrating this would be for someone who isn't computer savvy.

NAS works as expected. Purchased 3rd party backup software though. I’ve had a couple of connections drop, but I think that’s more due to my network than the NAS.

Too slow to be considered practical for anything over 0.5 - 1 GB in file size. You really have to wonder how anyone tested this and said it was ready. I have a computer engineering degree and experience in emebdded systems. This was a nightmare trying to setup. The inserted single-page "manual" with 3 steps is deceivingly simple. Once you try to start accessing it using "modern" tech like Windows 11, you will run into problems. First, nowhere did I see I would need to activate auto or dynamic ipv6. I couldn't see the device on my network until I did that through the web interface. Second, the web interface will brick itself without any warning at all if you accidentally try the jumbo frames or other settings in an effort to test what might work better than the current settings given there's absolutely no documentation at all. Resetting the bricked device is not fun as you have to spend 40 sec with a paperclip pressing the recessed pin (the alternative 4 sec method for resetting doesn't apply since it won't fix the bricked device, only the account username). Second, the only internal option for an HDD feels completely outdated as we approach 2024. An NVMe SSD would be much superior. There seems to not be any easy way to replace the internal storage disks especially with an SSD. So again, not having an option to buy it with an SSD or NVME as a baseline product is terrible since removing the disks does not look straightforward at all according to the online My Cloud Personal Storage Drive PDF. They don't mention replacing it with an SSD or NVMe in the document at all. Find something more ergonomic that lets you easily swap drives and allows for NVMe capability. I plugged in an external 4 TB NVMe to my computer and got speeds fast enough to transfer roughly 500 GB under 20 mins or so. This "storage" device is a joke.
