Note that this device is a WD My Cloud Home device and differs from a WD My Cloud device. Although it is not as flexible as the WD My Cloud device, this device works very well and is very fast. The WD My Cloud Home device creates individual user areas, along with a public area. Individual users can automatically download photos from their smartphone with the My Cloud Home app, available for iOS and Android.

    Slow & Unfinished Product

Much like the My Cloud, this device is incredibly slow during backup/sync. I have an old Passport that handles transfers about 4 times faster. Furthermore, the device won't sync folders from my D: in it's current form. At least with the My Cloud you could do some finagling to make that work; with this, tech support can't even figure it out. I'm awaiting a call back after they themselves determine if it's even possible. My gut said to go with Synology, and that's exactly what I'll be doing after returning this product. However, I will say. The product is extremely simple to setup on mobile devices and single drive systems. It just goes downhill from there rapidly.

WD - My Cloud Home is a new but a HUGE step back

I was Disappointment with my purchase. .Mycloud home has its own WD software functionality blocked from working with their MyCloud home device. The WD software, and their suggested commercial software is available, it just doesn't work with the MyCloud Home Device. It sees my Seagate external drive, but not the WD drive. Why in the world would WD go out of their way to stop allowing the software to work? I would see a reason a motive for stopping Segate but the WD drive? I am overwhelmingly surprised at the decision. I bought it to do backups both purchased commercial and supplied software does not work. If you want to get one, in my case File Explorer for windows10 will allow you visibility see the drive, but the drive is not visible for other programs. I called WD support for help and the phone call was short, they were polite but cut to the chase, with my question and said if you are trying to get backup software to work it wont., They stated WD software wont work, along with other commercial software wont work. No other recommendations for commercial software and even if they did, they would not support it. Take Great Care when deciding to get this product. Mine is going back today. If enough people just say no they will get the idea to undo what they did.

    Useless as a standard NAS

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

First of all, the product works as designed. It is just not designed as a NAS. Having to use the web or an app to move files around rather than just being able to mount the device as a volume is a complete disaster. Taking a mechanism that everyone who uses a computer knows and then providing a cumbersome poorly designed mechanism to do the same thing is useless. To tope it all off, it automatically goes through your files (moved onto the system as files not photos or videos) and makes them available in their photos and videos sections. This results in a jumble of photos or videos showing up in those sections which you then have to organize into albums despite the fact that you had them organized the way you wanted before upload. If you factory reset the device so you can get rid of it, it doesn't delete your account so you are left with your email and whatever password you set hanging out there. This device is totally useless for what I wanted. It may be useful for someone who just wants a backup for media. I would return it if I still had the packing material but that got thrown out with all of the Christmas wrapping papeer. If you are looking for conventional NAS, Do Not Buy!!!

Im an amateur photographer and wanted a home base storage device that would stay out of harms way and use to backup all of my smaller travel drives. This thing crashed after 2 years of minimal use and even physical touch... Ive lost thousands beautiful photos that I will now have to pay $400 for a data recovery business to extract. Super bummed with this purchase and with WD.

    DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!!

I would give this zero stars if I could. I have had this drive for less than a week and it has completely malfunctioned. Thankfully I only lost a small amount of files due to how long I had this machine but this could have been catastrophic for someone looking for a small in home cloud drive. Worse yet their support line either can't or won't help your issues when your drive fails, continuously suggesting you go back to their support website where you have already been, and after that suggests that you send it back to them for a replacement. So in short your options when your My Cloud Home drive fails are send it back to WD for a replacement hoping that the next drive won't do exactly the same, send your drive for file recovery to their recommended 3rd party source for upwards of $1500, or sit on the expensive paper weight you now own and hope that one day the drive magically repairs itself. I used to get nothing but WD products for file storage but wow was this a severe letdown. Do yourself a favor now and steer WAY clear of this product.

I received this and thought I'd run it in tandem with my older 2 TB WD MyCloud but it's so fast and manageable I just trashed the old one! Very easy setup and very responsive! Web and device access are seamless!

Failed when I needed it to as Time Machine backup

Looked like it was working for Time Machine. Had to get my Mac wiped to fix a bug. Went to use Time Machine, and this hard drive would not mount. After hours both on the phone and working in store with Apple Care, the problem was the hard drive. Lost my backups (luckily had my files on iCloud. I bought it literally for this purpose and didn't need it for a couple of years, and then when I actually needed it, it didn't do its one job. Never buying Western Digital again.

I cannot be more mad about this product. I bought it and followed all instructions it worked fine for a year. I have over 5k photos and videos on it from all family vacations etc. Then it decided to quit working, guess what....your photos and videos are now jailed in this device with no recovery. Their customer support is complete garbage. They send you links to read and follow how to recover the device nothing works. It is a nice paperweight with no support and nowhere to turn to get your stuff back. I have to reach out to actual data recovery companies to help me. You have been warned.

It works as expected. Easy enough to set up as a backup drive for a MacBook Pro. A bit noisy while reading and writing. In general, out of sight and out of mind without any hassle.

    The WD MY Cloud

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought one of these 4 years ago. I connected it to my router/modem directly because I needed network capabilities and to be able to connect remotely for my data. I'd go to my clients offices and try to access the information with my IPAD pro, and I couldn't connect half the time. I called WD and they walked me through the trouble shooting. There was something wrong with the settings that cause disconnection. I had to repeat this so many times and became frustrated when my clients asked me a question and couldn't answer it because I didn't have the data. I then started rebooting which worked for a while. Then I bought a remote controlled electrical outlet to reboot remotely. That worked for a while, but then it stopped too. After a dozen phone calls to WD, I threw in the towel. I also owned a WD external hard drive, 4tb, but after a year it stopped working also and all my data was on there. I was lucky to get it off. I vowed I would never buy another WD product!
