Very Basic NAS and only works with their app

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

It is too basic and also has a lot of constrains IT will only allow you to share files via their Mycloud.com app Even in you own network you need the app to access the files It provides a simple public folder via Samba protocol but you cannot set specific permissions Also it is a little slow. Because it is a closed system and only allows access to it via their own app that is dependent on their own system I gave them only 2 stars. Synology's NAS is a lot better. more open and compatible with multiple platforms, protocols and networks. If you want something simple to use and you don't mind to use their app then this is for you. But if you need something that is open and flexible then look somewhere else.

Best Buy does not act in good faith

I putchased this device for an immediate need. Yhe shipping was for overnight and it has not even still been shipped. Supposed to arrive in one day and now being told it will be 5 fays. I purchased via Brst Buy for the delivery times and could have purchased elsewhere. I have now wasted 30 minutes of my life trying to find out what will be done to cotrect it. The first representative hung up, the second representative put me back in a queue despite saying they were elevating me to a supervisor, the third appears to be trying to do something. They never called back although asking for a callback number on disconnect of call at the very beginning. This is horrible service and not doing what is advertised on shipping. I do not recommend purchasing from Brst Buy if this is the type of service they supply when they do not fulfill orders as promised. The third representative has now also shifted back into a standard queue. Ridiculous supposed support. Now at 35 minutes trying to speak with someone that can actually do something other than reading a screen prompt.

Don't buy WD My could home, get a external HD

Don't buy WD My could home, get a simple external HD for your BKP's please read below For what is proposed I'll give it 1* see my reasons and think twice before you buy it. 1. too expensive what it offers 2. the available apps are far too complicated for beginners 3. they just won't support desktop app support, meaning you will use it as a regular external device which costs 1/3 of the price. 4. the mobile apps do not sync your photos in time and you have to open the app and synch it yourself, like today I opened it and there were 2k photos and videos to upload 5. it does not preserve the original dates of your videos and photos making it impossible to organize, which means you have a messed storage with 2000 photos and videos from different dates all uploaded in a single day. 6. even people with knowledge of mobile phones or windows won't be able to easily find their photos in the right order they were taken. 7. did I already say it's too slow to upload the photos finally, the only good thing is that you don't need to connect a USB cable, the wifi or network allows you to do it, so does it worth paying that much to just be able to connect to wifi/networks? I DON'T THINK SO. Think twice and don't buy it if you don't know what it is otherwise you just buy it to have it returned later, you probably could miss your phone and expect to have it all save at this device, wrong you won't get it.

    Upgraded, but at what cost?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I had previous MyCloud products and was then forced to upgrade to the new line after MyCloud 3 was forcibly ended. Upgrade worked for a few months until the My Cloud platform was hacked. WD is now not supporting cloud ops, and the only way you can really use this drive is as a locally connected file store. So if its not a true cloud drive, then what they're selling here is a bit misleading.

Had this about a year - worked well until WD ...

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Stated they will end support June 2023. Why is this still for sale if the only solution is to go through the process to enable local access only. I actually like this idea if it gets the drive off of the WD system, but why end support for something that is still being sold as a working product. There should be a disclaimer in the BB ad for this product to let customers know what is coming if they buy it now. WD should not be offering a product they do not support any longer. I like how the software worked and was finally happy with a WD product. Now, not so much when a company does this. I will be looking for a new NAS system that is not from WD now. Wish BB had something else to offer besides WD products.

I bought this to replace the first mycloud because it crashed. I'm sorry I bought both of them but this version is worse than the first one. I thought I would have sharing capabilities (software) like I had with the previous version. I don't! I am able to share the file but the person I share it with can't edit it, which is the whole reason I bought it. Also, if the internet goes down I can't access my files. Big deal if you are running a business!! Additionally it frequently logs me out for no apparent reason. This is the worst device I have ever purchased. Not worth $5 much less the $200 I spent on it. I'm switching to Seagate!!

    No Local UNC connection

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Nice idea, badly implemented. I can't map the drive from a computer, it requires you install their bloatware to use. I just wanted a large network attached hard drive so I could connect via UNC path (\\WDHome\public) to store files on for accessing from tablets, sonos, etc. This device does not allow that. It basically requires an internet connection to do anything. Why can't I pull up a local dashboard when I type the IPAddress in the address bar? Why can't I assign an address. I have a 3 year old WD Network drive, with WAY more flexibility. Its like their platform has gotten worse over time. Very disappointed in this new product line.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is the third MyCloud I have tried. Every couple years I give the product a try, it doesn't work correctly, I take it back. This is my fault for believing that WD can make a good NAS product. 3 strikes, you're out. The worst part is, there's only a 15-day return policy and I'm stuck with a brick. Waiting for WD support to give me an RMA.

Should have done more research but this device is fine if you just want a local home source to plop your c rap but even then there are several caveats. MyCloud Home does not have a local dashboard either. Otherwise this is not going to be for you. Anyway, good for what it is I guess but Ill pay the extra money and go the Synology route.

    Totally sucks, abandoned the consumer.

Totally sucks. Very disappointed in Western Digital assuming knowledge on a Home based device. They have totally abandoned the consumer. The Get Started Card is actually a very weak How To connect card - no instructions. The user is ask to go to mycloud.com. There is a link to a desktop APP called WD_Discovery; once installed there are three APP links inside the app - still no instructions. One APP link is to WD Backup - but WD support webpage says "(Support for WD Backup has ended. Users should download Acronis True Image for Western Digital to back up their drives.)" Downloaded the third party Acronis App, installed it, but it can not see the WD My Cloud (it shows up in Windows Explorer) - still no instructions. This is a total fail. Tried to uninstall and reinstall, but Acronis App gives an uninstall error. I have watched so many Youtube videos trying to resolve this but "no go". Now I am going to return this item and buy the recommended Synology DS220j.

Can a Hard Drive Make You Dumber?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This may be the most useless device I have ever purchased. Lack of support, lack of functionality, lack of space, and lack of sense combine to make this monolith into whatever the opposite of that thing in 2001: A Space Odyssey. I thought this would be nice to back up my PC: No support for PC Backups. I thought it would be useful to port pictures between devices while keeping them out of Big Data: Not only does this scrub your data and sell it, it also doesn't upload when you try. There is no way to upload the contents of folders, evidently. Every attempt leads to hours of waiting to find out that the folder names are there and each one is empty - you have to upload each individual file. I swear, if I could have chosen to shoot myself in the foot or buy this negative space and someone showed me how frustrated and depressed I am now that I own it, I would've shot myself in the foot without hesitation.

    SLOW FILE TRANSFER SPEEDS

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

tl;dr if you want faster transfer speeds you need to sacrifice the ability to access the device anywhere,or buy usb external hard drive. The usb port on the back cant transfer files between your computer. Really hate reviewing products but this product deserves it,I was using this to store some backup images of my OS which was around a 400gb file and just any other random folders little did i know that transfer speed to the device will not go higher then 18Mbps which would take around 8 hours to transfer the 400gb file. Searching around i found that others have this same problem as well, the only work around they found is to not install the WD software on your device,To access your my cloud without the software installed type \\MYCLOUD-xxxxxx\public , where xxxxxx is the last six characters of the serial number for the device into the windows address bar.Once i did this my transfer speed went to 110Mbps and my 400gb file transfer time went to only 1 hour instead of 8 hours. The trade off was my files wouldnt be accessible through mycloud.com which negates the whole point of the device. So basically i have a external usb hard drive with slow speeds,i should of just bought a usb external hard drive as there speeds are in 5Gbps range instead of 100Mbps on a watered down version of a network hard drive. https://community.wd.com/t/18-5mb-transfer-speeds-on-gigabit-lan/246365/2

    Very Disapointed

Not sure why this device has good ratings on Bestbuy's website, but just look at the reviews for the APP. Terrible. I loved the idea of this hard drive and I really wish it worked. If all you are looking for is a network drive than the My Cloud Home is a glorified solution - you can easily plug a normal (much cheaper) HDD into your router's USB port. But the APP. THE APP! This app is SO terrible, I don't understand how such a big company could hire such a poor app designer. NO flexibility what so ever. The one thing the app COULD do (automatically backup pictures) only worked half the time. The point of having a backup system is to be assured that your files are SAFE - instead you have to constantly worry and check that your files are backed up. I'm just lucky I bought a protection plan on the hard drive from Bestbuy, I was able to easily exchange it for store credit under the non-functional policy. WD should be ashamed of this product.
