You can not access this harddisk over the internet. You must use WD web account to reach. There is NO way to reach by ip address etc. It is not clear from the description on the box. WASTE of MONEY. Go and buy a USB harddisk and plug into new wireless routers with USB port.

    Defective

I have now had two 4TB My Cloud drives and bother were defective right out of the box. That's not my opinion. Western Digitals own support staff told me the boxes were defective and they needed to be exchanged at Best Buy. Not sure it's worth a third try.

    Barely a NAS

Seems like the only way to connect to this using the network is with the WD software. Can't connect by IP? Seems crazy. I know this is a home version but still, it lacks the most basic network functions.

    Don't Buy For Media Server

I wish I could give it 0 stars. I bought a cloud drive to use as a media server so we could watch our movies and TV shows without having to constantly change discs or be forced to buy everything again. This product completely fails. 80% of the time it will error out when trying to transfer even a small (<600mb) movie. The only reliable way to transfer large files onto it is through the USB port on the back, which can't be plugged into a PC! You have to plug ANOTHER external drive into the My Cloud and copy files via the mobile app. Once the files are on there, there's no easy way to set it up as a DLNA server. They want you to use Plex, which is only partially free. Even still, Plex can see the My Cloud drive, but it can't see any of the files in the Plex folders. I'm sure there is a way to set this all up. However, I am $200 to do all this work. If I wanted a project like this I would build a PC to use as a media center. The only positive is that once files are on the drive I can see them with my phone (but not Chromebook, that app constantly crashes) and they can be cast to a Chromecast. The amount of effort to get files on there is ridiculous. I know my network can handle it since we stream HD content from the web all the time. I'm going to taking this back to the store this weekend.

    Buggy software, does not work

I could never transfer files other than media onto the external drive. Lightroom catalogs, folders, etc. would not transfer. Then the WD Discovery app stopped working entirely on my Mac after 10 days of use. No uninstalling and re-installing would fix this, and after a couple of weeks of back and forth with WD Technical support, the line has gone silent... I have been told "we have already escalated your case to our engineering team and they are working on your concern. unfortunately, we are unable to provide you the estimated when the issue will be resolved." I am stuck with a $179 piece of hardware for which the software crashes instantly upon start. AVOID, or take back within BestBuy's short return period, which I, unfortunately, did not.
