This WD My Passport 1TB SSD is pretty amazing to me. But full disclosure here — the last external HD I purchased was a 750 GB WD that’s about the size of a medium-sized bible. To go from that to this, which isn’t much bigger than a credit card, is a kick in the pants. Plus it’s twice as fast and drop-proof. This was super easy to connect…and that’s all you really need to do. I guess with USB-C things are supposed to transfer much faster than what I’m normally used to. Great little hard drive. Easy to use; easy to disconnect and take with you if the need arises. What more can I say? Get it.

I was surprised at how small this is, it fits comfortably in my hand. It is very quick in moving my files, mostly music, pictures and videos which are very many. I am so surprised at how quickly it transfers consideringvthe one I was using is 9 yrs old, really good progress. It so very convenient to carry inside my purse or even my pocket. I love so much Two things to consider, not sure if that's how mini drives are the cable it comes with is very small and it does pretty warm while using. But I still give it a 5 because it meets my every need and these two concerns don't interfere with my regular usage.

I buy multiple portable hard drive‘s this is my first time buying this solid-state drive and it is such a pain. I bought it because my MacBook ran out of memory so my Lightroom Previous files needs to be on something fast. But this hard drive chooses when it wants to work. So when I’m working with light room and decided to go take a stretch and walk back to my computer it will already crash & restart the computer. Next thing you know it that solid-state drive will take 10 minutes to load while my other ones are ready to go. My opinion I feel it’s something to do with double sided USB see cord that is making it faulty. Because I had a similar situation with one of their products that has that same cord.

Fast, small, portable external drive with USB-C

WD - My Passport 1TB External USB Type-C Portable Solid State Drive- This drive is pretty awesome. It is small and portable with 1TB of storage space. It comes with a cable for USB Type- C connection and an adaptor for Type-A (USB 3.0). Speeds are dependent on the connection and on the computer, computer bottlenecks and computer performance, file size and, like most drives, some slowdown as the buffer fills. The top of the enclosure is metal, and the bottom is plastic. The NVMe SSD is capable of reaching up to 1050 MB/s read and 1000 MB/s write speeds over the USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface (10Gbps) (USB C). The drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption. This is setup with the onboard software “WD Discovery”-this includes: WD Apps such as WD Security app, WD Backup and WD Drive Utilities, and learn about software from WD partners. This software also does firmware upgrades on the drive – something I always find useful on SSD drives since there can be performance, security, and drive safety changes issued by the manufacture. And allows you to set the password This drive is impressive with the software package, size, compatibility, and speed. The Highest temp I obtained was 52C (125F) with a sustained constant 200GB write to the drive. Normal Op temp was 30-32C (86-90F), which is generally much better than any of the competition. Having a better-designed heatsink with an all-metal case would have probably dropped this figure down.

    Excellent Portable Drive

I am very happy with this portable drive. It works with every device I tried it with. I've connected it to my PC, Mac, iPhone, Essential Phone (Android), iPad, and even the USB port on my television. All worked perfectly. It's a speedy little devil too. I actually installed MacOS on it and tested it as an external boot drive. It worked very well. An external USB drive will never match the performance of an internal nvme ssd, of course, but this was more than usable. When new iterations of MacOS come out what I usually do is clone my Macbook Pro to an external drive before doing a fresh install of the new OS on the internal drive. That way I can always boot off of the external drive and into my old OS installation if I need to check how I had something configured or if something just isn't working on the new OS version. This drive is PERFECT for that. Another nice touch is that they include a USB-C to USB-A adapter in the box in case you don't have or don't want to use a USB-C port. My only gripe with this is the length of the cable they include. It's too short. I tend to use my laptop actually in my lap a lot of times and often have a usb drive connected and sitting next to me. The cable that comes with this drive is basically "dongle-length" so it will basically just sort of hang off our the computer it is connected to which is less than ideal. I have longer USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A cables handy, so I just used those and ditched the included cable, but those that don't have an appropriate cable already may be disappointed that they might have to buy a longer cable to better suit their needs. All that said, I still love this little drive and it will definitely be getting plenty of use 10/10 would recommend to family, friends, etc...

Excellent, Fast Drive- but Cable it too short

Drive is fast, and does not appear to overheat when doing somewhat heavy writes. It appears to fully support the USB C 3.2 specification. However the USB C cable that comes with the drive is too short (6 inches). Also, instead of two cables (USB C to USB A and USB C to USB C) it comes with one (short) cable and an adapter for USB C to USB A. Also, some of the WD Applications such as the WD Utilities are not compatible with the drive.

I must say I am very impressed with this WD Passport external SSD drive! When I opened the box I couldn't believe how small it was compared to the several old style external drives I've been using. The neat thing about it was it was recognized immediately by my Windows computer and also my iMac without doing any formatting. The USB Type-C cord works awesome and plugs right in the back of my iMac using the Thunderbolt input. It does come with a USB- A adapter in case you need to use it that way, which I did on my Windows desktop. As far as speed...wow! I did a test loading on over 4,800 pictures and it was blazing fast compared to my old WD. I do a lot of photography for internet work and this will come in so handy! Plus you can bring it along as it's just a little larger than a credit card - extremely portable. The only gripe I have is I wish they would give you at least a 12" cable because the one included is only about 6 inches. This is fine if you are working with a laptop but when you are plugging into the back of an iMac or a Windows desktop unit it basically just flops because the cord isn't long enough to have it resting properly on a surface. I did order longer cords to solve this issue. The front of the unit is a stylish designed metal and the back seems to be plastic. It got warm but not overly so, although I didn't tax it. Was basically minutes and not hours for which I won't have a need to do. Aside from the short cable issue I would highly recommend this hard drive. It literally blows the old style external hard drives out of the water in speed! You can't go wrong with buying!!

    The speed justifies the price

Yes, this is more expensive than standard expansion drives, but the speed completely justified the asking price, especially if you're shuttling video clips between devices when stitching together a project. The NVMe tech is blazing fast. I'm used to "set and forget" copying for large files, meaning I anticipate the job will take some time to complete. This diminutive little drive kept exceeding my expectations, and could process anything I threw at it in 1/2 to 1/4 the time. If you work in digital video or content preparation, this is an excellent backup solution that can let you move tons of material from your source device in no time flat. It's also sturdy and much more pocket-friendly than standard expansion drives. Highly recommended for content creators who are on the go.
