    Amazing portable drive

I've had other portable external drives but this one seemed just a cut above all of the others. First, this drive came with two cables - usb-c and regular usb cable. It is nice to have a choice though you'll be limited with what your MAC will offer for ports. If you have a dongle that adds ports, this is an added feature that I was not expecting. Hooked my drive up to usb-c and the operating system did its thing and recognized the drive and after a bit, I was backing up my ssd drive onto this external drive. The speed was very good though I didn't get what the box said I would. Perhaps my Mac was older and that prevented me from reaching those top speeds. The case is impressive and appears to be very durable for travel. I've had WD drives before and not had an issue with them so I expect this to be the same. I really like the 2TB (more like 1.78 TB) space and you won't go wrong choosing this. Added feature is the encryption option. I have not worked with that aspect yet.

    Thinnest External Hard Drive Ever

You can never have enough hard drive space. I do a lot of digital photography when traveling and I always back up my photos and videos to multiple hard drives and keep one in my luggage and one on me, just in case something happens to one of them. I always shoot over a terabyte of pictures and videos so a one terabyte drive isn't enough. Last trip I took two four terabyte drives and they are 3/4" thick and not comfortable to carry in my pocket. This "My Passport for Mac" is only 3/8" thick, half the thickness, and slightly narrower than the 4Tb one and also half the weight. That makes carrying it in a pocket much easier. I like that this drive came with 2 USB 3.0 cables - one USB-A and one USB-C. Depending on which computer I take with me, I only need to take one cable. The 4Tb drive was USB-C only so I had to take an adapter with me and had to be careful I didn't lose it. Although the drive comes with hardware encryption, I prefer not to use it as I am only using it for photos and I have a fear that if I encrypt it and something happens to the drive, I might have trouble recovering the photos. If you are using the drive for data files that are confidential, by all means use the encryption. It is a spinning hard drive so It's not as fast as an SSD but a 2Tb SSD is way more expensive and at this point speed is not an issue. I am using the drive on a Mac but I reformatted it because every time I wanted to copy a photo to the drive, it asked for my password. This way I can drag and drop photos quickly without having to enter my credentials. You can of course leave the drive the way it comes which is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and it will be fine. It's all a matter of how you like to work. It can be formatted for Windows as well but for now, I'm using it only on Macs. It's so small and light, I think I'll carry it with me all the time.

    Compact, Portable, Made for Mac

This hard drive could easily fit in your pocket. It is about the same footprint as a wallet. It's thin and compact and doesn't take up a lot of room. I had a WD My Book doing back up duty for my Mac Book Pro, but it was big and bulky and if I wanted to take my laptop and the drive to work in another room it was a pain (the My Drive has to be powered externally). The My Passport for Mac is powered off your USB A or C connector and does not require an external power supply which is absolutely fantastic. Setup and use was extremely easy. I pulled the drive out of the box, connected the included USB C cable and plugged it into the Mac Book. Its plug and play with the Mac. An icon popped up on the desktop that says "My Passport for Mac" and the Time Machine backup wizard popped up automatically right afterwards. I set it up to perform a backup, and within 30 minutes I had backed my Mac Book Pro up to the hard drive (around 190 gigs of data). Keep in mind this is not a SSD, so you'll need to be cautious when moving around while the drive is running. It does get warm to the touch while spinning, and I noticed that the jack where the USB cable plugs flexes a little. It wasn't a big deal while I was using it, but after extensive use I wonder how well it will hold up. I really like the drive! It is portable, compact, and does exactly what I need it to with little to no effort spent in setup. Highly recommended for Mac users.

Western digital has been the worse for me! I make films and commercials so i own about 50 hard drives. I’ve had 5 drives go back over a decade and they all have been western digital usually at the 2 year mark.

It's amazing how small a 2 TB drive can be. This drive is very thin and light. Easily fits into a coat or pants pocket, or the zippered pocket of a laptop sleeve. It comes with two USB cables (one of which is USB C for the latest Mac models). My MacBook Pro found and accessed the drive flawlessly. Drive access is very fast. So far, seems very stable and well-made. The blue color is very professional. Highly recommended.

It does exactly what it was meant to do. A little backstory: I was extremely hesitant to try this brand again after such a horrible experience I had several years back with another one of their hard drives. I had to reboot and restore my older (at the time; newer) MacBook Pro and when I plugged in the hard drive it told me to enter a password to access my info. Well, the problem was, I had never created or enabled a password on that device and I still to this day have never been able to access my files. So you see how that could’ve put a sour taste in someone’s mouth. Now let’s jump back to today. It works, I saved my files and it was super quick to get it going on my MacBook Pro. To set it up to work with my Mac took no more than 2 minutes. Granted I’m much more content heavy than I was back then, so I wasn’t able to set it up as part of the Time Machine as it’s too small of a memory to save it all, however, all of the items I did save was there, as soon as, I plugged it in. I did try to check the writing speed for over 440+ video transfer but I unfortunately couldn’t after I realized that the files had stopped transferring due to the dongle that we now have to attach to newer MacBooks (if we need to have multiple things plugged in at once), failing to stay connected. So it was no fault of WD. But as it was estimating the time, it wasn’t that bad approximately 20-25 mins. I do appreciate the two connectivity options with the USB-A or USB-C cords that are included. All in all, I would recommend it. Years have passed, technology has gotten better and I now feel confident that this WD drive won’t have me dead in the water. Only time will tell, but so far so good.

Great buy and best way to keep a second back up if our family photos. Plenty of storage space for all photos taken and easy to back up from our phones as well for personal or work documents . Its a great feeling knowing if something happen to our phones we could lose of those great photos to go with all those great memories of the kids and grandchildren.

To be clear, I am not reviewing the backup software included with the hard drive as I have a method of backup that I rely on and personally prefer. This review is more about the speed, functionality, and aesthetics of the device. All three are exactly where you wuold want them to be. My MacBook is older and only has USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. This device utilized virtually the full 5 GB bandwidth of the USB 3.0 throughput. I'm primarily going to be using this drive as portable storage and was very pleasantly surprised at how compact and light it was while still feeling sturdy. Overall this is a great 2 TB had drive and I'd definitely recommend it, especially if its on sale.
