I got this drive for my wife's aging Mac Book Air. We have been living in a hotel while our home is being remodeled and do not have access to our WD My Cloud which is usually on our home network. I use My Cloud to backup all of my computers but I have never been able to get her to use it. The other day she thought that she had lost an insurance spreadsheet that she had spent weeks compiling. Thus the need for a portable backup. The computer recognized the drive upon plugging the USB cable in. The WD Discovery software failed to install for two attempts. I assumed that the failure was due to the fact that when my wife got this Mac she took an oath to never upgrade the OS due to many issues with updates and upgrades in the past. I copied and pasted a number of her important files into labeled folders, copied all of her files in a batch and then turned on Time Machine and did a complete backup. All worked flawlessly and quickly. While there is no transfer speed/progress graph as there is on Windows, the transfers progressed quickly and finished in about the stated time. With my Windows machines it seems that these operations start out with blazing speed and then slow to a crawl, this did not happen here. Backing up with this drive seems much faster than me backing up my Windows machines over the home network to My Cloud. The second time I plugged up the drive I was able to install the WD Discovery software. I sort of expected some WD backup software to be included but there is none, it is designed to work with Time Machine and that's fine. We are both happy with this drive, it's simple to use and fast!

    Amazing portable drive

I've had other portable external drives but this one seemed just a cut above all of the others. First, this drive came with two cables - usb-c and regular usb cable. It is nice to have a choice though you'll be limited with what your MAC will offer for ports. If you have a dongle that adds ports, this is an added feature that I was not expecting. Hooked my drive up to usb-c and the operating system did its thing and recognized the drive and after a bit, I was backing up my ssd drive onto this external drive. The speed was very good though I didn't get what the box said I would. Perhaps my Mac was older and that prevented me from reaching those top speeds. The case is impressive and appears to be very durable for travel. I've had WD drives before and not had an issue with them so I expect this to be the same. I really like the 2TB (more like 1.78 TB) space and you won't go wrong choosing this. Added feature is the encryption option. I have not worked with that aspect yet.

    Thinnest External Hard Drive Ever

You can never have enough hard drive space. I do a lot of digital photography when traveling and I always back up my photos and videos to multiple hard drives and keep one in my luggage and one on me, just in case something happens to one of them. I always shoot over a terabyte of pictures and videos so a one terabyte drive isn't enough. Last trip I took two four terabyte drives and they are 3/4" thick and not comfortable to carry in my pocket. This "My Passport for Mac" is only 3/8" thick, half the thickness, and slightly narrower than the 4Tb one and also half the weight. That makes carrying it in a pocket much easier. I like that this drive came with 2 USB 3.0 cables - one USB-A and one USB-C. Depending on which computer I take with me, I only need to take one cable. The 4Tb drive was USB-C only so I had to take an adapter with me and had to be careful I didn't lose it. Although the drive comes with hardware encryption, I prefer not to use it as I am only using it for photos and I have a fear that if I encrypt it and something happens to the drive, I might have trouble recovering the photos. If you are using the drive for data files that are confidential, by all means use the encryption. It is a spinning hard drive so It's not as fast as an SSD but a 2Tb SSD is way more expensive and at this point speed is not an issue. I am using the drive on a Mac but I reformatted it because every time I wanted to copy a photo to the drive, it asked for my password. This way I can drag and drop photos quickly without having to enter my credentials. You can of course leave the drive the way it comes which is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and it will be fine. It's all a matter of how you like to work. It can be formatted for Windows as well but for now, I'm using it only on Macs. It's so small and light, I think I'll carry it with me all the time.

    Compact, Portable, Made for Mac

This hard drive could easily fit in your pocket. It is about the same footprint as a wallet. It's thin and compact and doesn't take up a lot of room. I had a WD My Book doing back up duty for my Mac Book Pro, but it was big and bulky and if I wanted to take my laptop and the drive to work in another room it was a pain (the My Drive has to be powered externally). The My Passport for Mac is powered off your USB A or C connector and does not require an external power supply which is absolutely fantastic. Setup and use was extremely easy. I pulled the drive out of the box, connected the included USB C cable and plugged it into the Mac Book. Its plug and play with the Mac. An icon popped up on the desktop that says "My Passport for Mac" and the Time Machine backup wizard popped up automatically right afterwards. I set it up to perform a backup, and within 30 minutes I had backed my Mac Book Pro up to the hard drive (around 190 gigs of data). Keep in mind this is not a SSD, so you'll need to be cautious when moving around while the drive is running. It does get warm to the touch while spinning, and I noticed that the jack where the USB cable plugs flexes a little. It wasn't a big deal while I was using it, but after extensive use I wonder how well it will hold up. I really like the drive! It is portable, compact, and does exactly what I need it to with little to no effort spent in setup. Highly recommended for Mac users.

Western digital has been the worse for me! I make films and commercials so i own about 50 hard drives. I’ve had 5 drives go back over a decade and they all have been western digital usually at the 2 year mark.

It's amazing how small a 2 TB drive can be. This drive is very thin and light. Easily fits into a coat or pants pocket, or the zippered pocket of a laptop sleeve. It comes with two USB cables (one of which is USB C for the latest Mac models). My MacBook Pro found and accessed the drive flawlessly. Drive access is very fast. So far, seems very stable and well-made. The blue color is very professional. Highly recommended.
