Waste of time - software obsolete upon purchase
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this SSD drive to back up a new computer. I own three other Standard my passport back up drives So I felt this would be a good purchase. Unfortunately, the backup the software pre-loaded on the device is already obsolete and not supported. Therefore, I had to go to the western digital website which then transferred me to the SanDisk website in order to find the new software which doesn’t even have the same name. After loading the new SanDisk software, I still couldn’t back up my computer because the software would not recognize the drive. The only way I’ve been able to get the drive to work is to use the embedded back up software within windows 10. This is unacceptable for $150 purchase. A total waste of my time. Best Buy needs to pull their product off the shelves and get western digital to load back up software that works with the device.

Our's could have been a dud, Beware
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We have used WD portable hard drives for years, this was our first large capacity SSD. Purchased for the wife to keep work files backed up. She started using the drive right after purchase and the drive faulted within 2 months. When I inspected unit has no signs of damage but when any kind of movement the unit would drop off line. Possibly the cord got pulled or just poor electronic solder joints. I'm hoping others have had better experience and we just got a dud.

Not so fast
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I use two 1TB external SSDs with my Late 2017 MacBook Pro, this one and a Samsung T5. This one provides read/write speeds of around 250MB/sec according to Black Magic Disk Speed test compared to a spinning disk speed of about 100MB/sec, so it's a nice improvement, but the Samsung T5 doubles that to 500MB/sec for only $30 more (at the time I am writing this). If I were to do it again, I'd get another T5.

WD Software is self-defeating
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This device worked fine for about a year. But the SecureW2 software that comes with it locks up all functionality. It blocks its own updates, blocks access to your storage devices, and blocks its own uninstall. This backup software will most likely corrupt all of your data. This is one of the worst products I have ever dealt with. Pure garbage.
