I have to mention first that I only use WD drives for anything I need. I purchased this 4 TB WD My Passport Ultra external drive back in January but due to some changes in my plans I didn't use it until less than 2 months ago and was so disappointed how slow it was, even my 1 TB My Passport that I own for 7 years now works much better and faster than this ultra drive. I know that there might be something wrong with this unit particularly and it doesn't meant that all this product line is bad, I had a similar experience with a My Book drive that I purchased this year but when I returned it and bought another one it was completely different in regards of performance and speed. For this unit, I think I have to live with it since the return period is already been passed.

The hard drive plugs into a usb port, selects drivers and is ready for use....straightforward

This is my third WD portable drive and this one died on me in less than six months. I need reliability and consistency and this one has just stopped working. LED comes on and I hear it spinning but it will not read anything. Have tried everything to get it to boot but to no avail. Sending it off to see if I can get some of the data off of it but I'm not hopeful. A real pain. Going to SSD with Seagate or SanDISK and forget WD from now on.

I have always been satisfied with my Best Buy and Western Digital products. I purchased this drive as a backup drive and never keep it plugged into the computer. I backup once a week. I purchase the drive in May 2018 and it failed on August 2019. For not keeping it plugged in and only using it once a week to update my backup, it didn´t last long. I should have purchased the extended warranty.
