Too slow for large data system backups

Way to slow to backup a large capacity disk drive. My 1.3 Tb took almost 12 hours to run a backup. OK for spot use such as backing up individual folders. With all the Covid worries, it wasn't worth risking my life to return the item at the store.

I was never able to successfully install it on my PC operating under Windows 10. And each of the help email correspondences came after 24 hours and their solutions didn’t work. So I returned it.

I returned this external drive because it needed a tech savy genius to adapt it to a mac. I bought two different ones and returned both. I discovered the other Best Buy in my area carried specific drives for both macs and windows systems. What a concept! Guess which store got my business.

I got the My Passport Ultra for two reasons: 1. to make a copy of the numerous files (music, photos, documents) on my home laptop so I can delete the ones I no longer use, but am too afraid to delete in case one day I find I might need them. I have had my laptop only 18 months, but already it is creeping up to capacity on file storage on the hard drive. 2. I frequently bring my work laptop with me home or when I travel in order to have access to files I want to continue working on. My work laptop is a workhorse, and weighs about as much as a Clydesdale! By saving the latest versions of the files I recently modified, all I have to do is drop this in my purse and go. It is about the size of a deck of card and only weighs 8 oz. Strengths: The setup is simple with plug-n-play installation. It runs on a Mac or PC. It is quiet and doesn’t vibrate when backing up files. The feet on the bottom help in grabbing onto the surface and avoid sliding across the desk/table. It is easy to update files you have worked recently on. You are prompted whether or not to replace a previous version of a file. The file transfer speeds are fast and reliable. I backed up 2 laptops with huge amounts of files, photos, videos, and music. It took a lot less time that I expected. The blinking light in the front shows when it is transferring and will turn off when you have ejected the drive. The My Passport is fairly light (8 oz), being small enough to fit into a purse or carry-on for travel. The best thing about this is I no longer have to bring two laptops with me when I travel. That just saved me 10 minutes in the TSA line at the airport to remove and put back into my carry-on one of the laptops. The USB A and USB Type C compatibility is great as I have both connections with my laptops. Even more convenient, it is just an adaptor versus another cable that you just end up losing. It has the ability to import files from cloud storage and social media, it offers password protection, a 3-year limited warranty, and more. 4 TB is H-U-G-E. I moved all the files from two laptops and I still have 3.34 free of 3.63 TB. Unbelievable! The My Passport Ultra is a super fast, large capacity, portable hard drive at a very reasonable price…and a no brainer purchase.

The WD 'MY PASSPORT ULTRA" is a sleek looking 4 TB drive (also comes in 2 TB but I have the 4). It is just under 21 mm thick. It comes ready for USB-C and 3.0 with a small included adapter. I like that it comes with a limited 3 year warranty. If you have both a Mac and/or a PC, you can switch back and forth with no problem and back up all your data. The included software now works with several cloud-based storage, such as Google Drive or Dropbox. Additionally, you can encrypt your files with 256 bit AES Hardware Encryption. As a benchmark, I transferred an 18 GB file from my PC to the Passport with USB-C (3.0), and it took 2 min 37 seconds. It was BLAZING fast. Transferring back from the Passport to the PC was slightly quicker, at 2 min 33 seconds. Overall, extremely satisfied.

This device certainly has a lot of storage, but it costs more than it should. I bought the priciest one with features I probably didn't need. I recommend buying the cheaper version.

I was very happy with it first year. However, it stopped working, basically not communicating with my PC after nearly 1.5 years. Don’t know how to retrieve the backed up data on it.

It's pretty slow, but that's to be expected for an HDD of this size. I haven't had any R/W problems so far.

I bought this for business use after already owning two WD 2TB SSD units. The 2 TB units worked fine, and I actually wanted to buy a 2 TB unit again, but my local store was out of stock. So, I purchased the 4TB unit on the eve of a business trip. Well, I connected the drive to my laptop and got nothing. The laptop didn’t recognize that a drive had been connected, and the drive had the dreaded slow, steady blinking light. I later tried connecting to two other computers with the same results. I also tried different USB cables, with no change. So, needless to say I was terribly disappointed, and to make matters worse I had to purchase a replacement drive at a significant cost (no Best Buy near my trip location). When I got home, I immediately returned the drive to my BB store for a refund.
