This is my second external hard drive from Western Digital. My first one was a passport slim, I was amazed at the quality of the product. It was like a work of art, all metal body with meticulous attention paid to every detail. A truly sturdy shell that looked and performed very good. I was thoroughly impressed. For my first attempt at obtaining a second external hard drive I ordered a colored plastic one and when I received it I was really let down. It looked cheap, the body was larger, more flexible, and all of the attention to detail was gone. It looked like the playschool model. I sold it to a classmate and thought that I would try the metal edition hoping that the body would be a little sturdier. It is not. Also, the socket in the actual hard drive where the cord plugs in is noticeably cheaper feeling as it does not engage very well, not as firm with larger tolerances than the slim. So, to recap ... The newer "Ultra" version is larger, the body is more flexible, the cord socket is of lower quality, and it just seems cheaper in its construction than the old Slim version. I kept it because I needed it for a class and my time ran out for finding a drive, it does what it needs to do and has not given me any trouble yet with use about three to four times a week for about five weeks moving large raw photo and Photoshop composite files so as far as longevity is concerned I cannot offer my opinion. Maybe high quality drives at an affordable price do not exist any more. It just seems like its getting harder and harder to find quality products at a fair price these days.
