I am not quite sure who told you that Macs have their own "built in virus protection", but they are wrong, Macs are just as vulnerable if not more so than a Windows machine and there have been a lot of news articles lately in regards to this.
We would advise doing some research and then deciding on what security to use as you definitely need it.
