Macs are becoming more vulnerable to Malware everyday.
We would advise researching Thunderstrike2 and the elevated privileges bug before deciding not to use a security solution. There is currently Mac malware that renders the machine completely useless unless you flash the chipset.

It took a long time to load and did an inadequate job checking for malware, etc. An alternative program was then used, which quickly loaded and found and fixed over ten times as many problems as Webroot.
