Just after one year and of course the warranty is expired it needed a new sump/pump motor which is a major component and one of the most expensive to replace on a dishwasher. The part installed by a repair service would cost well over half of what this unit cost new. I figured since it was only a year old it was a fluke and replaced the part myself. Now after another year the heating element has burned out which means no dry dishes or heated water to clean dishes. All I can say is this unit is trash. Don't be fooled by the good reviews as they do not represent any long term use, during the first year I would have rated this unit well too. Does whirlpool design its appliances to only work as long as they are under warranty, definitely. Funny thing is this dishwasher replaced a working Kenmore unit from the mid to late 90's that was still working great so if your thinking about replacing your old dishwasher with this shiny new whirlpool just keep your old one, it will work better.
