Made by Yoshifumi Kondo, Miyazaki's protege, and with a script by Miyazaki, this film does not live up to the hype such a pedigree would warrant. It's not bad, simply not up to Studio Ghibli's standards. For Ghibli completists and anime die-hards only.

    Glitches and permanetly freezes

The movie was great itself, but the disc would keep glitching and would eventually freeze permanently. Therefore, we were unable to watch the movie without any faults. We tried more than one disc, but it only resulted in the same outcome- freezing permanently at the same spot. we believe that the faults were caused by the quality of the DVD and we are looking forward to finding a flawless DVD so we could watch the move uninterrupted in the near future.

    Priceless!

Studio Ghibli’s “Whisper of the Heart” is probably the most different of any of the films they have put out. The setting is placed in present day Tokyo, and because it is based on a manga, the romance angle is the main plot instead of the usual adventure emphasis with romance mixed in. Following the shoujo (girl) anime style, there is no action. In that respect it is similar to “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, two other great Studio Ghibli films that you should definitely pick up if you don’t already own them. ... The story follows Shizuku, a middle school girl, who spends all her time reading fairy-tale books and writing lyrics to songs. She also spends her time wondering about Seiji Amasawa, the name of a boy that appears on every take out card in every book she’s borrowed from the library. When she finally meets him, he’s not what she expected or hoped he would be like. From there, hilarity ensues, and she discovers that he really is not as bad as she first thought. ... It is incredibly sweet and completely ADORABLE! The art and music is gorgeous and the characters are down-to earth and easy to relate to. It is a great story and a great movie.

Studio Ghibli Never Lets You Down

This is one of my personal favorites in the Studio Ghibli catalog. If you are looking for a deeply moving, family oriented film, this is the one. From the music to the story to the detailed colors and background objects in the animation, Whisper of the Heart is sure to please anime and non-anime fans alike. I have not watched the blu-ray copy yet, but Disney never fails to deliver fantastic transfers. If it's anything like the transfer for Nausicaa or Castle in the Sky, it's sure to be vivid, detailed, free of noise reduction and "waxy" smoothing, and a true representation of the artists' intention.

This is a movie for all ages. Instant anime classic. A story of 2 teens that discovered the dreams and drama of youth. Great animation and whether you watch it in English or the original Japanese, you won't be disappointed.

This is a wonderful story, but I do recommend watching the Japanese version. The English version is OK too, but it makes more sense in Japanese as far as songs/lyrics.

Disney/Miyazaki collaborations are always welcome in my house. Added this gem to the collection and couldn't be happier. Great film.

It's a touching film. It has a great way of tying everything together. The only thing I didn't like was how abrupt the ending was. Otherwise, worth seeing at least once.
