    Not the strongest X-Men movie

The latest installment to the X-Men franchise is one of the weakest yet. When First Class arrived, it provided a fresh new take, and an excellent comeback from the poorly paced, and boring, X-Men: The Last Stand and the just plain awful X-Men Origins Wolverine. Apocalypse marks the rounding out of the First Class trilogy, but it ends it with a thud. The director tries hard to make the most of the poor script, but unfortunately the weakness of the story is just too much. At times it feels like a rehash of the best parts of Days of Future Passed, and at others a depressing soliloquy on the human condition. While the effects are good, and the action sequences are enjoyable, this film tries to hard to be serious.

So I loved the rebooted series, but this move felt rushed and with out the major plot building of most of the xmen movies. I am a collector so thou I needed it to complete the series, I feel like Singer could have done better.

The x-men franchise is still one of pioneers and beloved franchises prior to Disney/Marvel taking over the landscape. Fox, at times, knows what to with the franchise. The movies have been hit (X2, Days of Future Past, First Class, Deadpool) and or miss (Wolverine: Xmen Origins, X3:Last Stand) but Bryan singer, who is back on the helm again, is elevating the franchise each time he makes an X-Men film. It's a fresh, new vibe to the franchise with this movie. Some characters, like past movies, could have been utilized more to expand their stories but hey when you're working with an ensemble cast, not all things can dome to fruition. Solid movie overall and one of the best of the franchise.

As with most trilogies, by the time you get to the 3rd installment the producers, writers and directors are trying to put too much into the movie. Trying to introduce/reintroduce too many characters along with a storyline and villain that deserved more time to develop as well as trying to continue already established storylines make what could have been the pinacle of this second Xmen trilogy a fan favorite, fall short. It felt rushed and was unsatisfying. But the effects as always are well done and the McAvoy and Fassbenders time as Prof X and Magneto have been the highlight of the series and fit well with their counterparts McKellen and Stewarts portrayals in the original series.

After seeing the theatrical trailer for this movie I was not at all interested in seeing it. I thought by the appearance of Apocalypse, plus the history of X-Men movies not being that great, I thought it looked like it was going to be terrible. Plus I'm no fan of Brian Singer film or Jennifer Lawrence. Singer is blowing the Mystique character way of of proportion as usual. After seeing it on DVD, I was pleasantly surprised. It has a good story, even though the Magneto story ran its course long ago. Apocalypse's physical presence aside, he was a good character. Plus I think those of use who know the X-Men history are tired of seeing the same characters rehashed over and over.

While this 3rd installment may not be the best to mot people I find it to be my favorite of the 3 with first class being my second favorite. I won't review the movie here since that is subjective. HDR in this 4k version is some of the best I seen with just a few scenes that look a little soft. as for the audio I was surprised this 4k version included the dolby atoms track which doesn't state on the cover unless I'm blind, but nonetheless Im glad it has atmos because its reference quality you will here so much coming out of the overhead speakers. when jean releases her Phoenix power you can really feel how atmos makes all the difference. this is a must buy and a great choice to show off as a demo since HDR & ATMOS are reference quality.

While the X-Men movies rank up there as some of my favorite comic book movies, this one seems to lack something. Mystique didn't have a great fight scene bc she was put more into a leadership role, and of course the original cast was missing after returning in Days of Future Past (except for *SPOILER ALERT* a brief appearance by Wolverine). Maybe Days of Future Past was too good of a movie that this one was destined to fall short? Having said that, it is still an entertaining movie. Magneto and Quicksilver steal the show, and Jean Grey definitely has her moment to shine. The effects are amazing as to be expected from an X-Men flick. A fan will still enjoy.

Bryan Singer brought the X-Men to the big screen over 15yrs ago in a perfect vision. Although not all episodes in the series have been as stellar, it has nevertheless remained strong, even through the recasting of younger versions of the characters. APOCALYPSE is no different, combining the strength of the "junior" cast with a lovely "revolutionary" spin on the mutants & how they regard each other. And, to boot, bringing the fantastic Oscar Isaac onboard as the arch villain/deity Apocalypse. My only issue with this flick is that it jams an awful lot of story into its running time; I would've been happier with another half hour in this world.

Middle of the road X-Men movie

The X-Men franchise has had 9 movies so far, and while Apocalypse isn't among the worst, it's still not particularly good. It's also looks a bit worse, following on the heels of Days of Future Past and Deadpool (which are arguably the best of the series). Apocalypse (the character) feels pretty wasted in this movie, and he SHOULD be the greatest, scariest villain in the X-Men universe. The stakes never feel as high as they should, and Apocalypse never reaches the caliber of threat that he should be. It's set in the 80s, but you can hardly tell. I guess they just wanted to keep the trend going, from First Class being in the 60s and Days of Future Past being (mostly) in the 70s. But whereas First Class and Days used historical events from those decades as part of the plot, there's no real reason for Apocalypse to be set in the 80s, and it never really feels like it is. The cast is a bit cluttered (a common X-Men movie issue) and a lot of characters get the short shrift, particularly Jubilee, Psylocke, and Archangel. One of the biggest problems in the movie is Jennifer Lawrence (who I normally like a great deal). She was contracted for the franchise before she hit superstar levels of fame and popularity, and once that happened, the X-Men movies started to focus more and more on her character. And while a Mystique-centric X-Men movie could be good, sadly it looks like Jennifer Lawrence could not care any less about being there. She phones this performance in, hard. Overall, unless you feel the need to complete your collection of the series, skip it.

The best of the second trilogy

Personally, I think this is the best movie from the second trilogy. I am not a big First Class fan (though Kevin Bacon does play a solid role as the villain), and I think there are too many moving parts (and some occasional drawn out parts) in Days of Future Past. While there are moments Oscar Isaac is not scary as Apocalypse, I think the movie is pretty good. Bryan Singer seems focused on a main story here, and I believe the film shows that for the better. I really like the short story line about Magneto's losing his family. I would like to have seen his hatred played out more (I can only imagine the anger from Sir Ian McKellen put to the acting of Michael Fassbender). Overall, I recommend this movie to superhero movie lovers.

X-Men: Apocalypse is an entertaining film and has some noteworthy instances, however I found the movie to be a bit overstuffed. There were a ton of characters, as expected in an X-Men movie, but the plot took a lot of unnecessary tangents that convoluted the overall direction of the film. Some of those characters also seem like an afterthought, which is a shame because some of them are actually really cool characters. The main antagonist Apocalypse himself was quite interesting, although he doesn't seem as menacing as you think he should be. Still, I was entertained and thought it was a decent addition to the series.
