Definitely different since say 2000
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the Yamaha RXV679 to replace my dying 15 year old Sony ES V444 receiver. I did a lot of reading about receivers. CNET And others basically narrowed it down for me to the RXV479 and the Onkyo TXNR636. Each has their plus and minuses. At that point in time, the RXV479 was 399 and the Onkyo was 599. I went to Best Buy to physically look at them and immediately seen a difference. Since I used to repair electronics I know a few things others may not. The Onkyo had a larger power supply transformer where as the RXV479 did not. The heat sink for the output transistors were larger as well so of course there was a big weight difference (the Onkyo has a internal fan as well but that isn't a factor for me in this case). I looked at the other Yamahas and seen that the RXV679 has the bigger power supply transformer, the larger heat sink and the added weight as well. These will be beneficial during those high usage days! They were both 599 when I bought the Yamaha and it really was a flip of the coin. The Yahmaha RXV679 is rated at 90watts RMS whereas the Onkyo was rated 100RMS (this rating means more than peak wattage). 10watts will not be noticable to the human ear. At this level of wattage you really won't hear a noticeable difference unless it's 30 or more watts difference. My old receiver was rated 120 RMS so I do notice a slight reduction of "range left on the volume knob", but I can live with it. I don't use the amp 24/7 like i used to when I was younger but this does sound decent on both music and movies. The Onkyo seemed slightly geared toward music. You really can't go wrong with either. The minimal deciding factor was the better interface on the TV during set up and the fact Yamaha has apps you can download to control the receiver. Onkyo has an app but it is REALLY basic. The Best Buy guy showed me it on his phone and I wasn't impressed with it at all. Regardless of which you chose, the RXV679 and the Onkyo TXNR636 are essentially evenly matched. I honestly believe you can't go wrong with either. The Yamaha Apps and website was the deciding factor for me (plus the fact I got the Yamaha for $50 cheaper as I am writing this!) Side note- I initially connected everything thru HDMI but changed it after since I like to, at times, have say a game on the TV and the radio playing music say during parties. With HDMI, what audio you choose, that selection is in the TV screen and I don't like that for the most part. I like having complete control of what I listen to while something else is on the TV so I went back to optical cables for my cable box and DVD player and it sounds good! I'm not giving up much power at all. I have a medium to large size room and can live with this. To get the same power I had I need to spend at least another $200-$300 bucks and I would rather upgrade my speakers with that money. I believe I read any surround sound above DTS, you have to use HDMI for proper surround sound processing. This wasn't a issue for me since I use 5.1 Dolby Digital which is currently the most used format. I don't have the room for 7 or more speakers without overcrowding the room. Not needed in my opinion.

Powerful Amp
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted to find a receiver that has a lot of power. This is everything that you need. I promise this amp has a lot of power and plenty of different functions. Yamaha makes very powerful amps. The amp is very easy to set up, just remember to utilize the on screen setup function. It is a lot easier.

Great A/V Receiver for the price!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am very pleased with this A/V Receiver from both a value and capability standpoint. The tech specs are very impressive and does everything I wanted it to. In fact when I purchased it, it was not capable of HDR, but with a recent free firmware update it now IS capable of HDR. I have my SUHD DVD player along with DirectTV 4K subscription both feeding through my V679BL to my Samsung JS9000 55" 4K TV. The picture and sound quality is awesome! I have B&W FPM 4 surround speakers hooked up to it (5 of them), and they sound great even at a very loud volume. The only reason I was hesitant at first about this purchase was lack of HDR, but now that is resolved and I am very pleased with it.

need a tv to set up a stereo receiver....
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Disappointed, who would think you'd need to connect a tv to set up a stereo receiver when the receiver has a front panel display. Want to set up wifi connectivity, you need a tv to get to the settings. Want to set up which stations you want for internet radio, you need a tv to see the settings. Very disappointed, not sure what I'm going to do when I need to add another channel, etc, keep moving a small tv to the stereo receiver from another room? Crazy. Debating returning it for something more user friendly.

Great system but not for a novice
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I originally went with the Sony STR-DN840. It was extremely user friendly. The down side was that the 4k media players couldn't go into the receiver due to coding protecting 4k content. Upon Geek Squads recommendation I switched to this. Great system but still getting use to it. Definitely not for a novice. Big plus though is the pass through capability with moving forward into more 4k content.

Quiet
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The kitchen adjoins the living room ail it was important that it be quiet. Except for ice dropping into the box, it's really quiet. Nice compartments in the freezer as well. Love it!
