I am very disappointed. I had this receiver operating for approximately 3 weeks and noticed problems right away. I turned the tv on and it advised no input. I had to remove the receiver from the tv. The tv was plugged into the cable box and worked perfect.

Based on erroneous reviews this thing just doesn't work as advertised. There are much better options out there for the money the volume control is ridiculous as it starts off that -30.

I don't usually write reviews, but I'm extremely impressed with this receiver. We just bought a new 4k UHD TV, but we were running a very old home theater receiver with it and weren't getting true surround sound, despite running some very nice Klipsch speakers. I decided we needed to get something better, but I did not want to break the bank. We've had nothing but Yamaha for home theater for years, so based on the reviews, I figured this would be a good item at a good price. Our room isn't really big enough to run 7.1, so 5.1 was all I needed. I can't say enough good things about this. It was super easy to set up with the microphone, and once I tested some streaming movies and a Blu-Ray I was blown away. I really can't imagine needing anything more than this, unless you had a dedicated theater room that was professionally designed, and even then, having been in a few, I would not expect anyone other than a serious audiophile/theater geek to tell the difference. This is an impressive unit at a great price. The step up from this includes wi-fi capability and a USB port, but I didn't think that was important enough to justify the extra 50 bucks. If you are looking for a great sounding home theater receiver, get this - you won't be disappointed.

Good Receiver With a Few Quirks

This receiver replaced an otherwise fine Yamaha receiver that lacked HDMI connectivity, a serious disadvantage with today's home theatre. Why Yamaha omitted this feature from a 7.1 channel box had reviewers scratching their heads and made it necessary for me to use a Rube Goldberg connection setup that delivered a less than optimal audio experience. It was also not the most user-friendly device when it came to controlling an overwhelming array of features. The new receiver corrects all these issues. Making connections was easy, and while the box has all the features (and more) of the unit it replaced, controlling the system is intuitive. I am enjoying true 5.1 surround sound for the first time. Sound quality from a mid-level Polk home theatre speaker system is excellent. Now the quirks. The remote control must be pointed precisely at the receiver to get a response. If you are used to pointing remotes in the general direction of the devices you are controlling you'll need to change your habits. More serious is the fact that when you tune to some cable or satellite channels you may initially get no audio. The fix is to change to another source then go right back to the cable or satellite box. It's a little annoying, but it has worked so far. Fortunately it's easy to do; just push the source rocker switch up and down once.

    Sounds Good

I wanted to upgrade my cheesy LG LHT874 system that worked OK for a short while before DVDs stopped playing properly. It was time to get something that had good sound for home theater, bluetooth for music streaming, and wasn't going to cost a fortune. This unit fit the bill for me. I would have liked internet connectivity but it wasn't a necessity. It was easy to setup, it sounds great in a 15' x 20' room. The only issue I ran into was some older laptops would not pair up w/Bluetooth because they have older codecs and the receiver is not backwards compatible, so if you don't have a fairly new device, it probably won't work w/Bluetooth. However, my iPhone works fine and I am able to stream Spotify or any other music OK to the unit. I'm using an older Bose speaker system and it still sounds very good. There is a separate sub-woofer output so I may order another sub to go with the system.Overall, I'm pretty happy with the unit.

    Very good 5.1 receiver

I bought this to replace a 6 year old Sony receiver that lost the left channel. Setup was easy and the 5.1 capabilities meet all of my needs. At the close-out price it was a steal. Highly recommended.

Lots of inputs, options, but weak sound and defect

I thought this thing was exactly what I was looking for (more inputs than the competition, tons of configuration options they didn't have, short depth, standout looks) I was let down though. The unit I got didn't output an acceptable level of bass signal from the sub out port. I tried raising the generic "bass" level to +10, the subwoofer channel to +6.0 decibels (IIRC), the per channel equalizer setting to up the bass range, speaker size to Small, checked the crossover frequency, everything. All I could get out of it was a low rumble when I cranked the subwoofer's own volume dial the whole way up, something I didn't want to have to live with in case receiver ever decides to do a bass signal and the room shakes to the ground. No problem with the sub, not even that powerful, and of course it outputs destructive force with a y-adapter hooked to my phone. So a couple days later I happen to run across a top of the line yamaha from 10 years ago that some mysterious benefactor donated to a thrift store nearby and went back the next day with a duffel bag of speakers like a mad man to see if this might be a yamaha issue, as some googling had turned up, and it was. No bass from this sub port either. Luckily the thrift store one has inputs and outputs for days and was able to frankenstein a sub to it, so it came home with me for the time being and the new one was headed back to BB. Aside from that, the sound quality on this thing is harsh and small sounding, I had to turn the treble frequencies down because it was punishing my ears paired with my particular speakers. I could have lived with that if not for the sub issue because the amount of sound options in this thing is pretty amazing and I love playing with options. So I don't know if this is a Yamaha thing where they expect you to have a 300watt sub to amplify the weak signal or it was just simply two defective units (or 1 and and a failing old unit, the sub rca jack seems like a hard thing to mess up with all the other stuff in here). Anyway, I think I'll be trying Onkyo when I go back to the well, my brother's Sony is always turning off and on with no user input, turning on playstations, tvs, whatever, I don't find that to be helpful.

    subwoofer fail after 90 days

Suddenly my polk audio sub stopped working. Thought it was the sub, purchased a Klipsch - same problem. Yamaha CS is no help. The first question online chat asked was; "did you check the speaker wires?". Wow! THey had me do a factory reset - nothing - oh now the display has STB Refsw Desi instead of DirectTV etc, etc, etc...so they managed to mess that up. On hold for their phone cs - over 25 minutes now in queue.

I liked the reviews and the price so got the open box as the first recover for the new TV room. HDMI outputs didnt work right, a couple only had sound. Took back and got the new one. Having problems with HDMI outputs again in only 2 days. Sound is blinking off every few minutes while with the cable box and now the HDMI wont give picture on fire stick. Entry level not a good chose. Never had any problems when all was connected to the TV, with built in speakers. Returning and looking for a better receiver. :(

Do you have an amplified sub-woofer?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I don't. This amp only works with an amplified sub-woofer! This is mentioned nowhere in the product description or specifications. My home theater system does not have an amplified sub-woofer. Am I obsolete? I have a set of 6 perfecty good speakers. I am not going to spend $200 for a new sub-woofer just to use with this amp. The amp goes back. I will avoid Best Buy in the future. Sad.
