It looks like glass, and does a great job of preventing scratches and fingerprints. I would highly recommend having the store install the protector- it is a "wet install" and not a quick contact paper type of installation. You certainly can do it yourself, but it is tricky enough to spend the $10 - if anything goes awry with the install the store will replace it with no charge.

It is however much more expensive, than what you would expect of a piece of adhesive plastic. If I had had the time to shop around I would have bought something for a fraction of the price on the Internet.
