Synopsis

The Happening
Lady in the Water director M. Night Shyamalan puts PG-13 suspense on pause to tell this grim apocalyptic tale about a family fleeing a natural disaster that poses a grave threat to the whole of humanity. Philadelphia high-school science teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) is discussing the disappearance of the bees with his students when the staff is summoned to the theater and briefed about a mysterious event that is currently unfolding in New York City. According to reports, citizens in the vicinity of Central Park have suddenly and inexplicably begun seizing up just before killing themselves by whatever means are at their disposal. As the phenomena begins to spread and talk of terrorism fills the airwaves, Elliot, his wife, Alma (Zooey Deschanel), their friend Julian (John Leguizamo), and his daughter, Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez), board a train bound for the presumed safety of the country. When the train screeches to a halt before arriving at its final destination, however, the frightened passengers are forced to fend for themselves as each consecutive news report paints an increasingly grim picture of the situation in more urbanized areas. Theories abound on what could be causing the unexplainable rash of suicides, but the only thing that everyone seems to agree on is that it's some kind of airborne contagion that is carried in the wind. It would appear that humankind's reign on planet Earth has come to an end, but perhaps if this small band of survivors can find a safe place to lie low until this all blows over, all hope for survival of the species might not be lost just yet. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

    M. Night Shyamalan certainly has recognizable movies he has directed; The Happening is recognizable for the wrong reasons I think. I'm not an expert critic and I'll see anything at least once. But from the beginning of the movie, Mark Whalberg seemed very, very off as a teacher. Like a sense that you know he's not gonna be able to act. The movie begins with terrifying incidents of people committing suicide and immediately hooks you in. You wonder what the heck is happening and why they're doing this to themselves. It's a spoiler free review but let me just say that, others may like the ending but I was very confused. Not in understanding what happened but why they chose to end it that way. John Leguizamo and Zooey Dechanel are great actors but I felt indifferent to their characters here. All the dialogue and banter here feels very off and cheesy. Give it a try if you want to see what happens, but don't expect much. It's one of those movies that are so bad they're good.

Some people didn't like this movie. I was not one of those people. I watched the movie and found it to be very interesting. Some type of phenomenon is happening in major cities where people start acting strangly and then commit suicide. Were we come in is the human side with Elliot (Mark Walberg) asnd Alma (Zooey Deschanel) who are a wife and husband having some peoblems. They hear on the news about this thing happening and decide to leave the city with their friend Julian (John Leguizamo) and his daughter as the problem is only happening in cities. They soon discover it is happening in less adn less populated areas. I wont say anymore about the plot. The movie seems to have this feeling of impending doom and hopelessness. The scenes where people die are appropriately uncomfortable and I think M. Night Shymalan does a good job of making you feel some of the deaths. Of course in the end he throws in hope which seems to be a theme in many of his movies. The acting of the two main characters was great and there are these two random teen agers they run into who I thought were hilarious. I likeed the movie.

Can't be nice about this one, this movie was just flat out horrible! I've always said that with M. Night you either really love his movie or you really hate it, as there seems to be no in between with this guy and this movie was horrible! Just in case I didn't say it already, this movie is horrible! The material for this movie had the potential of delivering the message that it was trying to deliver in a big way, but missed the mark completely with the acting being as horrible at it was. Seriously, I thought I was watching a school play or something....that's how bad the acting was. I just couldn't believe it. Even Mark playing the teacher was horrible and his girlfriend that he was with....give me a break! Everyone from Mark to the Military guy to the citizens themselves were just horrible. I was warned too, but failed to heed them b/c with M. Night you either really like his movie or you really hate it, so I figured I'd give it a try anyway and how wrong I was. Save yourself from becoming another victim of this movie and don't buy it!

First off, let me say I am a fan of M. Night Shyamalan. I think Mark Wahlberg and Zooey (forget her last name) have done good jobs acting in other movies. However, this movie is extremely disappointing. Wahlberg and Zooey literally come off like their characters are mentally challenged at times. I dont mean that as an insult to people with mental disabilities. I mean, I was honestly wondering if their characters were supposed to be mentally challenged as part of the plot at times. I have talked to others that watched the movie and they said they wondered the same thing at parts. I get the "idea" behind the movie. And yes, it is "interesting". But the direction of the film, acting, and writing were just not up to the usual qualities of all the people involved. And it falls very short of what it could have been. Definately pass.

    "The Nothing Happening"

The Real Title of this movie should have been called "The NOTHING HAPPENING" Nothing Flipping happened in the movie, A bunch of people are dying at random, Commiting suicide and such. There are several Brain dead theorys as to what it could be causing it, from Terrorists, to p!ssed off trees (wtf?) But they never tell you what the heck it is in the movie. The last 10 minutes of the movie i was really expecting SOMETHING to happen... anything at all... and NOTHING, Absolutely NOTHING happened. to add to the entire Junktastic experience, is the god aweful acting by Marky Mark. I know this guy is a better actor than this. M Night Shamalama Ding Dong should have his directing priveleges Revoked immediately (having not made a single remotely entertaining movie since the Sixth Sense) DO NOT BUY, RENT, OR ENTERTAIN THE THOUGHT OF WATCHING THIS MOVIE

    Good Idea, But Terrible Movie

Where to start? I'm terribly disappointed in Mark Wahlburg. Here I was thinking he'd turned into a pretty decent actor and then he shows up in this slow moving, brainless thing! The people in this movie were about as realistic as mannequins in a clothing store window. Not to give any of the plot away[as if there is one!], but John Leguizamo leaves his eight year old daughter with Wahlburg and his "wife" to go look for his own wife in an area that's been cut off by "suspected terrorists" [don't worry....it's not terrorists of the regular sort]. Now who would leave their daughter[who has already , more than likely, lost one parent] to go look for the other parent? Don't you think a scared to death kid deserves at least one parent in the picture? Anyway...there IS lots of blood, gore and all of that, but not much of a plot to surround it. I went to sleep twice while watching it the first time, if that tells you anything. A real stinker!

I’m almost done watching this and I love this movie. It’s very creepy. But it also believable. I like the characters are playing here and it’s a very unique type of movie. It’s keeping me guessing throughout the movie as to why these should be things keep happening. I will probably watch this one again. I’m nearing the end now and it’s keeping me on the edge of my seat I love movies do this. What a weird concept I really like the storyline. As I sit watching the end of this it I’m like waiting for something to happen because it’s just a little bit too normal.

As I went down the list of reviews on this film, I see 5 stars and I see 1 stars, you either loved it or despised it. My wife and I personally loved it. You have to watch this film from the mindset of what if it 'happened' to you. I thought it was very intriguing. Plus, you have to be a fan, or rather understand, M. Night Shyamalan. Many people don't understand his way of thinking or understand his movies. I think these are the ones that didn't like it. My wife and I love his work, we have all of his films. Where as I don't think this is his best, it's not his worst,(The Village I thought was his worst, it was just ok). I thoroughly enjoyed this film and highly recommend it! I recommend watching it for yourself, ignore the reviews, and make up your own mind. By the way, I think his best films are Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, and Signs, if you haven't seen them.
