Synopsis

The King's Speech
Emmy Award-winning director Tom Hooper (John Adams) teams with screenwriter David Seidler (Tucker: A Man and His Dreams) to tell the story of King George VI. When his older brother abdicates the throne, nervous-mannered successor George "Bertie" VI (Colin Firth) reluctantly dons the crown. Though his stutter soon raises concerns about his leadership skills, King George VI eventually comes into his own with the help of unconventional speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Before long the king and Lionel have forged an unlikely bond, a bond that proves to have real strength when the United Kingdom is forced to flex its international might. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The movie had both good drama and lighthearted laughs. What makes the movie is the friendship between Prince Albert (played by Colin Firth) and his Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue (played by Geoffrey Rush). Throughout the movie, Logue helps Prince Albert overcome his speech impediment to lead his nation through the Second World War. The entire movie is the struggle for a king who has a stutter that prevents him from being a public speaker like his father and brother. But when his father dies and his brother recants the throne, the right to Kingship is given to Prince Albert which forces him to take the responsibilities of Kingship which includes public speaking. I think the movie deserved the Oscar for Best Picture when it was in the running. Overall the movie was great and I know that as soon as I finish writing this review, I plan on watching it once more.

"The King's Speech" will not play on LG BD590

"The King's Speech" Blu-Ray will not play on the LG BD590 blu-ray player. I got two different discs then finally contacted LG customer service, who after taking a condescending attitude with me, told me they were aware of the issues with "The King's Speech" blu-ray disc but did not offer a time when a new firmware update would be available to fix the issue. So, if you own this player, do not buy this disc unless you want to hang onto it until LG gets a firmware update together. What happens when you put the disc into the LG BD590 is the movie trailers will play but when it gets to the point it should either load a menu or run the movie, it justs blanks the screen.

Who doesn't like an inspiring tale of struggle to adapt to new technology and overcome weakness! We all have imperfections and struggles and when we confront them they make us strive to be better. Having a true story of someone else's success to act as motivation to face our own stumbling blocks is helpful. Being well acted and directed only enhance this story of human life. This movie echos "You can do it!!" It's a great family movie night pick that allows for lots of follow up discussions.

I came late to this movie; while everyone raved, I kind of let it pass me by. I finally bought the disc because it was offered at an amazingly low price and I figured I should finally see what everyone had raved about. I'm not sure what I expected....I wasn't bowled over, but it was very enjoyable, and I loved Helena Bonham Carter's portrayal (I've always been a fan of hers). Interesting to see the rather unorthodox methods that were used in the speech therapy!

    A New Look on WWII

This movie was fantastic. I loved it because it was a different take on World War II then what we normally get out of movies (Germany, and Hitler). Colin Firth was absolutely amazing in his role, and he was rightfully deserving of the Oscar he received of his portrayal of King George VI. I also thought Geoffrey Rush was great in this movie. This is a must have for anyone that loves history, or who likes a courageous triumph.

This film, which does play fast and loose with historical fact, is nonetheless and entertaining film about the father of one of the Twentieth Century's most famous and influential people. Not only a touching portrait of a man in an extreme situation, but also of a loving family man, and his wife is given a memorable turn by Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush turns in yet another memorable performance. Definite must see!

I really enjoy discovering an excellent movie experience when I am not expecting much. I was not interested in seeing this movie at all and just did because it was the only thing new to watch. I was greatly surprised to find how engaging the story was and how excellent the acting was from the entire cast. A true historical event (although I am sure it it embellished). Really an enjoyable movie, Give it a try!

This is a great film. It has some cursing including the "f" word. The context is used within a speech therapy session and not directed at someone. The film gives a behind the scenes glimpse into what brought King George VI to the throne of England and the personal struggles he faced in his life. Actors are well cast for their roles.
