This game is not without its glitches, and it certainly demands a lot of the player - it doesn't explain too much.
The game stutters on it's frame rate a little too much, and conversations can abruptly halt mid-sentence, additionally, the grappling hook targeting still seems a touch inconsistent in as much as you would expect it to be usable in some situations and it is not.
The game does put you in the role of the world's greatest detective. And it does this not through the detective mode (which of course is still key, but more from a strategic standpoint of taking out multiple dangerous enemies) but instead by presenting you with puzzling challenges that require you to deduce the correct tool in your arsenal to solve. Which may be remembering you can crouch!
The riddler challenges are particularly brutal in this game. They get much harder than arkham asylum. From variations of Simon Say's, to having to destroy 4 targets spread across a wide area simultaneously, they will keep your brain ticking over as you move around the city. And there are a LOT of them. Though there's a good smattering of "shoot this with a grappling gun" to get.
And this gets to the core of what makes this game so very good.
You could, if you wish, just follow the story missions and finish the game fairly quickly. I am sure you could complete the game in about 10 hours if you really wanted to avoid anything but core story missions...
However, in the mold of Assassin's creed Brotherhood, the game encourages you not to do this.
MAJOR characters appear in the side stories - and include content you just don't want to skip.
There is the occasional mini-mission much like Assassin's creed which require you to save a political prisoner from some two-face thug. You might not feel like being watched as you play, so those pesky cameras might be fun to hunt down and destroy. There are Alternate Reality training missions that lead directly to upgrades if you figure them out. And you can find all of this by happily hooking your way through the city looking for riddler clues, or just hapless thugs in need of a good beat down (you don't need a reason, you're batman)
Why would you do all this? Because it levels you up of course.
If you are a real fan of the combat system from Arkham Asylum, you will be glad to know it comes back with some enhancements. Not only does it try and train you throughout how to properly time critical hits, I found it a little more forgiving for the counter ability - meaning that if two guys are going after you at the same time, you can actually avoid both. The moves are even more extreme than before and the visceral hand-to-hand combat system is even more visceral (I just wanted to use the word visceral) as Batman can, with an experienced handler, comfortably take out 15-20 thugs without a single blow landing on him.
"Where does he get those toys?" - unfortunately, he doesn't actually let you ask him, but Batman comes equipped with EVEN more on his utility belt than before - starting you off with a remote controlled batarang even! (that thing is some fun! it has BRAKES!)
On top of all of this, is a great story. I won't spoil anything here, but catwoman is a welcome addition, and you will have some unusual alliances.
In short, this IS the best game of the year so far. It will have some competition in the form of Uncharted 3, Skyrim and Assassin's Creed's latest offering - but I would be surprised if any of those games manage to surpass Batman: Arkham City. On value alone, if you do everything, you will find yourself getting through about 1% of the game every couple of hours and that doesn't include the Riddler's challenges which are outside the game, or getting to play as Catwoman (if you have that option available to you)
