Posted by: talj from Mankato, MN on 01/09/2012I went with a D-link because my router is a D-link. I could not get it set up. I called tech support 3 times and they were very rude and could not understand their broken english. I returned it and got a Netgear WN3000RP. Works awesome! Took 5 minutes to set up and we have excellent connection.
I use it in... : Small home

NOT for a networking nubee...

Posted by: Skibum82 from NY State on 03/27/2011I've configured this device as a network extender coupled with a dlink DIR-655. It was a tough install, requiring a firmware upgrade that failed on multiple attempts. I had to contact customer support for assistance, fyi short wait time :). They were aware of known issues and were able to complete the firmware upgrade remotely. Once installed, the device works fine, giving me a 4-bar connection to my previous dead spot.
One major bummer with this product coupled with the dlink 655 is that your wireless devices will not automatically transfer to the strongest access point connection. You need to disconnect/reconnect to pick up your strongest signal.
Overall I'd give the product a thumbs-up for a user with some networking experience. There's not much else out there right now for home networking range expansion.

Couldn't get it to work!

Posted by: TAN9999 from Aspen, CO on 01/31/2011Myself and my IT tech tried to connect this to the existing DR-655 Dlink router as a range extender. No luck. We then read several reviews on line about problems with this range extender. I am sending it back once I get a shipping label from Best Buy.

Expensive, but works fine and easy

Posted by: shadowspires from Atlanta on 01/23/2011I do see where the other reviewers were possibly mislead in the setup of the device. The quick install instructions only leads you down the path of setting up with WPS services which I... and most people... probably don't enable on their primary Router/AccessPoint.
I do have a D-Link as my primary Switch and maybe that also helps my experience. But I basically chose the manual setup option against the direction of the instructions and put in SID and password to primary network and it seamlessly connected and extended my wireless network.
Have been using it now for a week or so without any hiccups of note... Maybe a rare situation in which a device stubbornly won't connect, but usually a reboot of affected system resolves issue and likely the issue with the connecting device and not the network.

Disappointing in the extreme

Posted by: MillenniumFlight from Rochester, MN on 08/25/2010I bought this router at the recommendation of the Best Buy saleperson, who seemed knowledgable. The D-Link "quick set-up" and User Manual both seemed to be clear and straightforward. But, despite every effort, I just was unable to create a stable extended network, and some devices seemed to trigger the network to lock up completely.
I finally discovered the following little gem on the "knowledgebase" section of the D-Link web site:
"Cannot connect to Repeater (Windows XP utility)
The problem is due to a limitation in Microsofts Wireless Zero Configuration utility. The XP utility is not capable of viewing two devices with the same SSID. Since both the Access Point/Wireless Router and Repeater are broadcasting the same SSID (must be this way for repeater mode to work), the utility does not work properly with either as it becomes confused.
You will need a 3rd party wireless utility which has the ability to connect to a repeater. All D-Links utilities are tied to a specific driver and card. They will not be functional with other manufacturers cards."
Informative, but hardly helpful. This device is essentially useless for its primary purpose, if you are using Windows XP.

Total nightmare to install. Documentation sucks.

Posted by: Leaningright from Illinois on 07/25/2010This was a total nightmare to install. Three tries at the help desk. The documentation has typos and the help desk has an attitude, except on the third try. If you have a D-Link router, this does work and ectends the range, but skip save yourself a headached, get ready to call for help and hang up if you get an attitude and start over.

Nearly Useless

Posted by: killercool from Baytown, TX on 04/23/2010I went to the D-Link support page to try to figure out what I was doing wrong, only to find out it wasn't me- it was this thing. According to THEIR website, but NOT THIS ONE, the "Extender" part of the network extender is only compatible with a very short list (SIX) of D-Link routers, and, as far as I can tell, nothing else. As a standard router, it is substandard, with ONLY wireless available, no hardwire connections. It can be used as a giant wireless card, but that functionality can be achieved better and cheaper by a gaming device. So, in conclusion, I'm on my way to my local Best Buy to get ALL of my money back, shipping included. Or there will be "heck" to pay.

Not what I expected

Posted by: KH415 from Chicago, IL on 04/19/2010I was looking for something to plug in and do minimal configuration to extender my wireless network. After all this is supposed to be an extender. Unfortunately you have to not only configure this piece of equipment but also your current router to accept it. If your simply looking to extend your network range, make sure you have a Wireless N router and a good wireless card in your PC.
