Good Quality - Flat Response
4
Posted by: ATTO from Orlando, FL on 04/19/2013I bought them to mix an album. I was not interested in volume that much but on clarity and flat response. In my opinion they did a great job. I used to have the ALESIS Monitor One and this M-Audio have better response, and punch on the low end. The only thing I can point out is that the mid frequencies are hard to find. If you are not careful this can ruin your mix.

Good Starter Set

Posted by: Findeis1 from Panorama City, Ca on 04/19/2013Upon removing the unit from the box I was impressed with the way it was packaged. I had used M-Audio products in the past and was always satisfied with them. This was the first time I was disappointed. The sound was very cany and not at all what I expected but for the money they made a good addition to my Son's Computer. All told I got what I paid for.

Great Speakers
5
Posted by: UKPete from PA on 03/23/2013After moving to the USA from the UK twelve months ago, I decided to build a home recording studio and needed a pair of small efficient speakers. After some online research I decided to go for the M Audio Studiophile's, as they seemed to tick all the boxes. I needed active speakers that were small, as I live in an apartment, but ones that had a good sound response quality, and within a budget of $150. I bought these from Best buys on line store for $119 and they are amazing. They have a nice detailed sound at low volume and a punchy flat response when turned up. Ideal for my situation. All my guitars sound good, electric, acoustic and bass. Using them with a condenser mic was rewarding and enabled me to establish a good vocal EQ mix. I would recommend these to anyone who needs speakers for their home studio and or possibly a home entertainment centre.......oops center!
Cheers UKPete

Posted by: outlawstarr from on 03/09/2013I absolutely dig these babies. They're both small in size, but the amp in sound is amazing. I can turn these up in a room full of people and override their chit chat. Good price too for monitors!

Great speakers.

Posted by: AntT from Houston, Texas on 01/19/2013I got these speakers for my desktop computer, they got great reviews on cent and it is well deserved. When listening to lightning from my game, I can almost feel it. They are very realistic, specially since they are just 2.0 speakers. They do take up a lot of desk space but well worth the volume of sound they provide.

Not very suited for gamers

Posted by: Elchinophil from Chandler, AZ on 08/24/2011If your looking at these speakers for gaming look else where. The volume has very little give it's either too low or too loud. The Best Buy person actually warned me about the give problem as well as the bass. If the bass is on the high side and doesn't seem to be balanced with the rest of the noises.
I ended up getting the Logitech Z623 ( which is 2.1 system ) they look more sleek and i'm happy that I returned the monitor speakers and got the logitechs.

Great for the budget minded!

Posted by: Recordomuse from Fernley on 08/22/2011Plugged these things in today and they work great for playing music off of my computer; I run the stereo jack into the front of the M-Audio Studiophile 4" Bookshelf Speakers. I also record using Ardour an Ubuntu Linux based program. I use an Alesis firewire mixer with it. I use the RCA jacks coming off the mixer for the M-Audio Speakers, so I don't need to switch inputs back and forth. I think the sound is excellent for both purposes--great value.

Disappointing
2
Posted by: Michael2011 from Salt Lake City, UT on 08/07/2011I really wanted to like these. I purchased a pair to use as speakers for my computer with occasional home studio use.
I did the research online, and bought a pair based on the seemingly unanimous opinions that these were great little speakers.
I set these up per the recommendations (8-12" from the wall, away from corners, etc) and with great anticipation, began playing some of my lossless recordings.
The first track I played began with some delicate acoustic guitar followed by vocals then full accompaniment (bass, drums, etc). The guitar sounded sweet and enticing - I was impressed. sadly, the moment the music included lower midrange, the speakers rapidly sounded muffled and "crowded". Bloody awful. I tried about 10-12 different songs, and the result was the same, regardless of my attempts to change the positioning and/or sound card settings. I had a headache from listening to these.
For context, I am an audiophile with many years of experience with systems ranging from $10k to over $300k and these speakers lack the very basic qualities that should be reasonably expected at any price point.
I would particularly recommend against these speakers for critical monitoring and music production (which is what they are allegedly designed for). Look elsewhere, or cough up the additional cash to get some of the monitors that M-Audio has made their solid reputation with.
I returned these and decided to avoid studio monitors in my price point (sub $200). Instead, I chose a set of the Harmon/Kardon SoundStick III, and am extremely happy with my choice. The HK's are hands down better in all areas for about the same price.
