Remember "Guitar Hero?" Ever wonder what happened to that line? This is it!
For the first time ever gamers of all ages can now just plug any old Electric Guitar(even a bass guitar) into their XBOX360, and use it as a Joystick! You immediately learn to tune, strum, and play along to old time favorites!
The game comes with songs from; The Rollings Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Animals, Nirvana and more! And there is lots of downloadable content. There is a wide variety of songs to purchase and learn to play!
Interestingly enough it has a built in difficulty level that picks up on each player's personal skill level. And it works...I'm The Ultimate Newb..and it's real slow at first for me(it doesn't make me play every note of the song in order to progress through the game;) so I can count the strings, and the frets, when it's time to switch.

I bought an electric guitar a long time ago, but never really used it. I bought some books and looked up some tabs online, but didn't stick with it. When I saw videos for this game I thought it would be a great way to get back into learning the guitar.
I only found a few songs I've heard of, but obviously it'll be different for everyone. When learning to play the guitar through mimicking a song it's always better to learn a song you know and like. The USB adapter works great even with my cheap electric guitar. Having a visual tuner before each song also makes it easy for someone like me who can't do it by ear.
The game itself is pretty fun. It has a bunch of tutorial videos to teach you the basics then gives you a challenge to play that uses the technique.
The game itself has a dynamic difficulty system. You start off playing 1 string at a time and if you do well it will automatically start adding more notes or chords or other guitar techniques as you're playing. I found this to be kind of annoying. Playing 1 note every few beats is super easy, but then having the game put in several chords and slides just because you can play the single notes was confusing when it's your first few time playing the song. However, if you play the song enough you will get better.
Another option I wish they had was the ability to slow down the song as you play it or to rewind to an earlier part right from the song. That way you can really practice the song. There is a way of slowing down a song, but it's only in the practice mode and you can't change speeds without backing out first. Even then it isn't for the whole song. It will cut up the song into separate parts and you would have to practice that 1 part at a slower speed and have to navigate into the menus to pick another part.
All the songs are not available at the start. You have to play through the campaign to unlock some of them. That's kind of annoying too.
They include the Bass mode in this version. Since I don't have a bass it let me use my electric guitar as one which works well. It just uses the first 4 strings.
In the end I did have fun playing this game. When I found a song I really liked I just kept playing it to try and get better at it. If you don't have the patience for that this game might not be for you.
So if you have the will and patience to learn a guitar yourself this is a good supplement.

At first I was skeptical about buying this game, knowing that most "music games" have been going downhill the recent couple of years. And I thought this was gonna be another guitar hero/rockband knock off.
But I was pleasantly surprised the first time I hooked up my guitar and played it. Note that I have tried to play guitar in the past, but I never had time or money to invest in expensive guitar classes. The way this game teaches you to read notes/tabs/chords is amazing. You learn at you're pace which is a good thing, no one ever wants to play on a level they feel uncomfortable on. The music that comes standard on the Game is a pretty good mix of alternative rock (not to mention the awesome selection of dlc online like, Carlos Santana, three days grace, megadeath, Blink182, foo fighters and many more) overall i think this a just have for anyone who wants to learn to play guitar.
(The game comes with stickers that you place on the neck of the guitar so you know where the frets at at)

When I first saw 3.5 star reviews for this game, I doubted that I would enjoy it much . But after playing for just 20 minutes, my opinion was completely reversed. This game teaches pure technique for guitar playing and when it's not having you play real, and classic songs, it is teaching you how to improve your own skills with catchy songs that are origonal to the game. Not many people that I know play musical instruments, so this game is great because it allows you to act as an actual member of a band, practicing songs and also playing concerts at multiple, unlockable venues.

Excellent game along the lines of Guitar Hero and Rockband but being able to play on a real guitar/bass is an awesome touch. Beginners can learn guitar techniques and learn songs through well constructed lessons but it can be a bit frustrating if you're not already a guitar player. A little guitar ability definitely helps. The scrolling format of notes and chords takes a little getting used to but once you get the feel for it the game is easy to play. Song list is very diverse and contains a lot of great tunes.

This "game feel like less of a game and more of a training program. Highly recommendable if you are interesting in learning to play the guitar. This isn't Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Don't expect silly characters dancing on a silly stage.... this is the real thing.

My 14 year old who has only dabbled in piano lessons and school band and doesn't really like practicing music has had a blast with this and is really getting the hang of bass guitar. This game uses a real bass or guitar to work through a library of songs. I wish it used tabs or music along with the Rock Band style of play so that she could work on other music. But at least she has a killer beginner ability to impress. We got a second cable so we could play with two players on guitar and bass.

I am mostly a sefl taught kind of person. However, there are certain disciplines where one needs feedback and instruction, and in my opinion guitar is one of them- at leat to get started. I don't really like failing in front of other people and I don't have time to schedule regular lessons, so something like Rock Smith is great for me since I can work on it in my spare time and fail in private.
