In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Soon unfrozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror and begins killing the researchers one by one.

Julia Roberts is Maggie Carpenter, a Maryland hardware store clerk with a habit of leaving would-be grooms stranded at the altar. An article criticizing her actions by a newspaper columnist (Richard Gere) prompts an angry response and leads him to investigate further in Maggie's hometown, where the mismatched pair eventually fall in love.
