I will be writing this review from a gamer/power user’s point of view (heavy workloads on desktop PC). As Bestbuy seems to be the only place selling this 2in1, I will attempt to list things that were difficult to find in other reviews. Currently using this for work and light gaming.
Battery: Turned on PC and it had 80% charge with an estimated 6 hours left. Fully charged it and installed a BatteryBar toolbar to find the estimated battery life to hover around 7-12 hours (depending on what I was doing). Unexpectedly good. The battery itself seems to be only located in the tablet itself and not in keyboard as values don’t change when plugged in. System, by default, goes into sleep mode when lid is closed. Haven’t had this long enough to test how this fares with battery life but if it is an issue, you can always change it so the system goes into hibernation instead to have a 5-10 second start-up time instead of instantaneous. Battery takes a while to charge. Estimated numbers were around 3-4 hours to fully charge at 50%.
Software: System came preinstalled with several pieces of Acer software but was not hard to uninstall. As this is a standard Win10 machine, I was able to install any program that I would on a normal desktop without a hitch.
Keyboard: The keyboard layout is fantastic. Was able to plug it in and use it like any other keyboard with little error. Could use some improvement in some button arrangements but overall a good layout. The buttons are membrane but aren’t mushy. I would compare it to the Apple chiclet keyboards. The keyboard itself is very light. This keyboard/tablet setup was meant to be used in a sitting position as the screen doesn’t tilt that far back. Keyboard is barely heavy enough to keep the laptop upright when in use. If no pressure is put on the keyboard, any slight touch on the screen will push the laptop off balance. Using this as a literal “lap” top is impossible as the laptop is constantly falling over on its back.
Display: An 800p IPS display. Screen is really bright at 100%. I was hoping for the lowest setting to be even dimmer but it’s bearable. Colors are very vibrant and didn’t notice anything off. There is some light bleed on the edge of the screen but it is only noticeable in a dark room when the screen is black. Touch controls are on point. Tap to click, hold down to right click, and drag to drag. There are some cases where the OS or program doesn’t register the tap even though the indicator is right on the object. This is mostly a software issue, however, since the indicator shows I am pressing it.
Performance: For an Atom CPU and 2GB of RAM, you shouldn’t expect much. Performance begins to dip when multi-tasking. Just from having several tabs in Chrome and Office open, 70% of memory and 20-30% of CPU power was is in use. While this system is still able to run 3D applications, it is limited to very basic renders. As memory is limited on this system, with 11GB free after system updates/program installs, you wouldn’t be able to install many games either way. Noticeable FPS drops can be seen when playing a flash-based ship collection game. Some puzzle games I installed through Steam ran perfectly fine. Steam in-home streaming also worked flawlessly after a few tweaks and ran Dota2 with near 1:1 play. Modern visual novels/books also ran fine but dipped in heavy 3D scenes. Using the klite codec pack for media consumption, the system can take them all. 1080p TS files. 1080p MKV files with stylized subtitles. Can’t, however, handle 1080p Twitch streams. 720p30 ones are somewhat fine. Other streaming services such as Netflix should work fine as the system can somewhat handle 1080p YouTube content. Yes, this is only an 800p screen but the system was still able to handle higher quality content without problems.
Random notes: System has a micro SD card slot that can handle up to 64GB according to another review. Not sure if it can support higher. Keyboard dock has one full sized USB 2.0 port on the right side. Nothing on the left. All the I/O on the tablet is located on the left. 3.5mm headphone jack on the upper-most part. Mini HDMI. Micro USB which you CAN charge with (through a wall charger. Not a PC). DC port for charging (bit flimsy, would prefer to use the micro usb to charge). The microSD card slot is also located here. Power/Volume buttons are on the top of the tablet. System itself is sturdy and does not flex without putting great force into it. Not sure what kind of glass this screen has since it has greater friction than my phone. It is still glass, though, so no flex. Would be difficult to find a glass screen protector for this. Speakers are on the back of this device towards the bottom. The back is plastic but has an aluminum look and feel. Touch pad isn’t spectacular. A little bit heavy but more bearable when keyboard dock is not attached. Has a wireless N chip and was able to cap out my net speeds at 50Mbps. Has Bluetooth also. Rotation/gyro seems to be on point. Has front facing and rear cameras. Haven't tested them. Not expecting much from them. Microphone is also subpar but coherent enough to make out words.
Bought this on Black Friday for $130~ and is definitely a 5 star device for the price. At the stock $200, it becomes harder to recommend and would probably be a 3-4 star as you can get a much faster device by paying a bit more. Overall, it is a good device for work and can also run media perfectly fine. Battery life is exceptional and can run low 3D applications just fine as well. Hopefully I covered what was missing in other reviews.
