There are several similar high-powered network adapters available on the market, but all seem to have some fatal flaw or another. Either lack of decent tech support, problematic drivers, or a flaw in the device itself. After reading several reviews in others places for this device, I decided it was worth waiting to have it shipped, than buy another brand available in-store. Amped Wireless is a relatively new company, and have already developed quite a track record from what I've read, both for their products and their technical support. So far my own experience is no different.
I read somewhere that it's important to download the drivers for this device from their website instead of using the included CD. I believe this is an important practice for any device you buy, as the CD could very well have been made several months or a year prior to your purchasing the device.
The drivers support every operating system, all the way back to Windows2000, and has separate ones for 32 and 64 bit systems. I like knowing that a driver I'm installing was made specifically for my operating system, and not just a generic "one-fits-all" driver. Thats usually where problems come up. Installing the drivers was fast and easy, as it has its own setup utility. Always remember to install drivers first, before plugging any device into the computer.
The included 26-foot USB cord is a real heavy-duty not-messing-around cord, built for outdoor use. But because of this, you will need to bend the cord a little to plug it into the device. It has a removable lid, and the USB plug on the device is inside. This is to help ensure everything is weatherproof. Once it's connected, you'll need to bend the cord a little more at a 90 degree angle if you plan to use the included #metal# stand to place it on a desktop.
Once it's plugged in to the computer, you may need to disable other network devices already in your computer to make sure it reads only this device #search Google for 'disable network devices' on your operating system#.
The device was only sitting on my desktop when I started my first signal scan. This is what impressed me the most! I picked up signals from all over the neighborhood I'd never seen before! And that was just having the thing sitting on my desktop. Most of the signal levels closer to my house that would normally be around 40 to 50 percent as shown on my laptop #which has a great wireless setup#, are all now maxed at 100% with this device.
Summary: This is the only antenna/power booster I'll ever need, for any connectivity tasks I'll have now or in the future. When my other wireless equipment dies out or needs to be upgraded, I plan to stick only to Amped Wireless devices. My next purchases will likely be the UA600, which is a compact version of this one, and their R10000G 600mW Gigabit router. I'm looking forward to it. :)
