August HomeKit Package
Posted by: Bruce from: on
We ordered two HomeKit versions of the locks, the camera/doorbell and the keypad.
1. The lock itself is HUGE. Not very attractive even if the finish matches other hardware. It operates smoothly and unlocks as it should when you're nearby. Still the knob was too large for my wife's hand. You must have a deadbolt installed as the August lock is a retrofit only including the rear part of the lock.
2. Each lock requires its own August Connect to act as the gateway between the Bluetooth and wireless connections. Each Connect must be within 20 feet of the lock which isn't always easy as there may not be electricity in the entryway. The Connect is required if you want to view or control the state of the lock remotely.
3. The Keypad is simple and does its job as expected.
4. The camera/doorbell is a total mess. Setup is easy but it goes offline frequently; sometimes it will come back online but more often than not, it will just stay offline. There was a "secret" way to reset the camera in the iOS software but, apparently, it no longer works after an update. This is a problem because if the camera is offline, you have to remove it from the wall which means having to remove the security screw; not an easy task. Then, you have to push the reset button and reverse the process. Picture is clear and the voice is easy to understand on both ends. It does include a wedge for doorbells close to the door.
5. In addition to the fact that you can't reset the doorbell in the iOS software, you can't do a lot because there is NO documentation. You would think that shipping their locks for a couple of years, they would have some documentation even online. The only support is the FAQ and installation video for each product. There's a lot to be customized but just try figuring out how to get there. Beyond that, contact support.
6. Support is decent. Submit a ticket and you're promised you'll be contacted by the next day. Each time, I waited 24 hours and then called them directly because I hadn't heard from anyone. The only phone number access will be sent to you in a receipt for your support ticket.
I have given up on August as a viable solution after waiting for months for a promised delivery. It was a waste of time and I replaced the August system with a Kwikset Kēvo which had an easier setup. One has to buy a Bluetooth Gateway but one is sufficient for multiple locks. It doesn't have a keypad but two real keys, two e-Keys (additional e-Keys are $0.99) and a key fob. In addition, I installed a Ring Pro and Ring Cameras. All-in-all, a much easier installation and they work flawlessly. In addition, the Ring and Kēvo work together so I can unlock the door from the Ring app.

A pretty solid, but not perfect, product

I've gone back and forth on ordering the August lock because the glut of online reviews for the previous version are either scathing at 1-star or over the top praising at 5-stars. I pulled the trigger because my condo association requires we have a common set of keyed locks, so I needed to retain my existing deadbolt while attempting to modernize the home.
Overall I've been very pleased with the unit.
The installation was very easy. It really does only take about 15 minutes as the instructions suggest. My biggest complaint is that once you open the packaging, start the install, and get about half way through do you find out that certain deadbolts are not compatible. Luckily mine was compatible...but I also happened to supposedly have the only model the required longer specialty screws (#14-28) that you apparently can only get from a locksmith. The instructions say to contact August and they responded within 2-3 hours and shipped me a set. But still...what is the incremental cost of 2 screws and why not just include them in the packaging for convenience? Compared to my thermostat/fire alarms that have hardware for multiple installation scenarios, the cheap LED lights have hardware for different types of recessed can lights, and my switches came with all color option in a single package. I think August could be financially OK if they threw a bone to the consumer and made install convenient for all.
Personally I think the operation works pretty great. It's not flawless by any means, but pretty good. When you lock & unlock in manual mode, the response time is quick (1-2 seconds) and seamless. I also use the geo-locating feature to auto-unlock when I approach. This one is a bit hit or miss. It usually works with more of a 5-10 second lag as I approach the door. If I have the wifi turned off on my phone, it tends not to accurately pick up my location correctly to unlock the door. This area could use improvement, but it's not the reason I bought the lock.
Auto-Lock feature. August offers the capability of this. I haven't done this yet because I'm afraid I'll walk out the door without my phone or keys one day and be screwed. I'm waiting on the doorbell to arrive so I can install that and the keypad. Then I'll set the auto-unlock feature to on probably.
I've also read numerous reviews about people's locks re-calibrating constantly or showing it was locked but being unlocked. I have not experienced any of these. I will say, my door is skewed and, prior to installing August, the deadbolt had interference with the strike plate. I relocated the strike plate so there was no interference and the door would open and close without having to push against it to operate the lock. I imagine if there was interference the lock would want to recalibrate.
I've read a number of reviews on the lock not responding when the phone is two inches from the door. My phone connects to August virtually anywhere in our condo without having to utilize the August Connect. I live in a 2-story 1,700 sf condo so at any point I'm not more than 40-50 linear feet straight line from the lock. I was actually pretty impressed by that.
So far I only have the August lock integrated with Nest. When you lock the door from your phone, the app asks if you want to set the Nest to away. It's kind of cool, perhaps a bit redundant because I think Nest sets itself to away if you're not around. But if you manually lock the door, August won't ask to set Nest to away, which is nice because you probably locked it from the inside.
Now if I leave through the front door, come back in through the back door, and geo-locate doesn't auto-unlock the door...Nest is stuck on Away and doesn't override the August automatically. I just pushed the nest and then it resent to Home status.
The lock seems to work well with the August connect as well. I have the connect in an outlet about 6 feet from the door. I think the connect device just sits dormant until you use the app and tell it to Remote Connect for lock status.
Next Step is to try and figure out if I can get August to tell Nest that I'm home...so Nest can tell Alexa I'm home so she can drop my entrance theme song and she informs Smart Things to give me a good light show as I open the door...one day...
Overall, I have been pleasantly surprised by lock. Probably because I read so many disproportionate negative reviews on the old version. I decided to take a gamble and happy I did. My biggest annoyance was that they didn't include the elongated screws for the "in-case you need them" scenario.
Operation has been great so far, I plan to utilize the keypad to give access to cleaning crew, etc. I'll update this as I have any new info or issues to highlight.

Inconsistent performance, risk of lock opening
Posted by: CPMCHI from: on
I purchased the August lock and the Connect for wifi access to the lock - the pieces are marketed to be easy to use and install - I struggled to get consistent performance with the lock system for 9 months. I found the August lock more complicated than the marketing materials made it out to be and the instructions themselves were challenging to understand at times. Security for my home and family are a priority so I'd expect a lock to be layered with extra safeguards and perhaps more involved from a technology and/or installation standpoint but I would want those aspects to be found in the lock itself, not in the setup and use of the lock for everyday applications.
I had some random instances of the lock unlocking itself when I first had it - I called August customer support and they felt it was probably an issue with the install or the set up the lock with my phone. I reinstalled everything and had several months of the lock performing as anticipated. About 3 months later, the lock started again with unlocking randomly. I called August and they reported that they were aware of cases where the lock would open unprompted and the reasoning ranged from the lock's proximity to cellular towers or some of the settings which were available as part of the setup options. I finally had to replace the August with a Kwikset Kevo lock - I couldn't chance a potential security risk should the lock open at the wrong time.

On paper, I guess this is a good idea. My husband installed it in about an hour. We have been playing around with it for a while trying to work out the kinks. It locks randomly and gets stuck (essentially trapped in the house). Maybe the next version will be better.

An improvement over previous gen, now recommended
Posted by: yekim from: on
I've owned the prior generation (non "homekit" version that comes in many colors) and this one is much better.
1- It connects to my phone more reliably than the previous gen
2- The battery cover is implemented much better (the previous gen would often fall off, this one uses magnets)
As far as I can tell, these are the main feature changes. I don't use any of the Homekit features so I can't comment on those.
Auto-unlock is still a little unreliable. Sometimes I get home, and it doesn't unlock so I do it with the app, and then I'm walking around my kitchen a few minutes later and I hear it auto-unlock, and my phone buzzes. LOL. Good thing I don't live in a bad neighborhood ;-) For us, it's "good enough" and the addition of the Keypad completes the system.

Rock Solid device
Posted by: Sf49er from: scottsdale, az on
I bought three of these and all of them are working just great. Install is a breeze, it takes longer to update the firmware(10 minutes) then it does to actually do the physical install. If you have a door that takes some force normally to lock, I.e., you have to bang the door with a forearm to push the lock into place, then you may need to do some adjusting with your normal lock install so that the August lock will be able to lock it as well. But this isn't a failure of the lock, the regular lock wasn't installed right to begin with.
I've also got this synced to my Logitech harmony remote which is also working like a charm. As for HomeKit, it failed once on me in 2-3 weeks of use so that's pretty positive in my opinion. Otherwise, it's been great just saying Siri commands to lock/unlock individual locks or the whole group of them. I'm glad I waited for that HomeKit version. I've also synced it to my nest thermostats and cameras. Within the August app, I'll get a small video clip of who came thru whatever door. I also have the app setup to send me notifications when any door is accessed which I personally like. I was able to appropriately adjust what features other users got from the locks as well, something that was key to me.
As for words of advice, just do some pre-research thru the August website to make sure the lock is compatible. Also, don't over tighten the mounting plate August gives you, you'll have a tough time mounting the device onto the plate and it may affect the ease of the device being able to spin that lock. From a HomeKit standpoint, you want to setup other users in house on their own August account and share access that way. From there, you can within your iOS settings, share the HomeKit capabilities. It's the only way to do HomeKit for multiple users as HomeKit is device based so again, you want to share that HomeKit capacity, not register each user for HomeKit thru the August app.

Awesome smart lock, esp with keypad!
Posted by: crimsonquaker from: on
This lock, paired with the August keypad, has worked out really well for my home and family. Installation was a breeze on my existing Schlage deadbolt, and everything I needed was either in the box or in the well-laid out online instructions. It was the coolest thing to activate the lock and see it light up and turn for the first time! Pro tip on the installation for Schlage deadbolts: try both inserts on the deadbolt pin to see which one fits better, since it affects the orientation of the outside cylinder piece. My kids and nanny love having their own personal entry codes, and I like the added security of knowing exactly who entered and left by just checking the entry/exit history in the app. I may never have to use a physical key again, which offers huge peace of mind and convenience. I've been using the lock for a couple of weeks and have yet to have any problems with it.

Expensive and slow.
Posted by: zlind5 from: on
This is a good start to a great idea. The HomeKit integration is great but the lock had a hard time locking my door completely and the lock in general was slow to do it. I just thought is was too expensive for what it does.

I pick up this home kit yesterday with the Connect and I’ve read some of the reviews from a few different website and heard about the unlocking problem. The installation took about 20 or so to get it up and running. I am an Android User and I think there is a setup issue with the app but I was able to work around. Adding the Guest User Account was problem if you are trying to setup your family account using the email address account. The August software would not pick up email verification code for the second email after the initial email was sent. I spent the extra 70 buck for the August Connect because it would integrate with my Nest thermostats for the auto way feature when the door was locked. I think the Autolock Geofence is a great feature and your Location Mode on your phone must be set High Accuracy which drain your battery a little more than usual but it help the accuracy of the GPS Location.
I wish the app had a feature to track the battery status but overall I am impress so far. I would recommend getting the August Connect because you can control it from anywhere and notification is a bit over kill but I will probably turn it off. It a great feature if you have older kids who get on the Bus and is the last one to leave the house, the notification sent directly to the owner.

Glad I bought it

I love my August Smart Home Solution! The smart lock is great because I’m one of those people that can never remember if I locked the front door and this allows me to check the status of my lock and then lock it from my phone if I forgot. I also like having the ability to give virtual keys and key codes that I can control and take away for anyone we want to have access to our home. And I love the fact that I don’t need a hide-a-key anymore. My favorite part of the system is the doorbell cam. It is like a security system since it allows us to view and talk to visitors through the doorbell cam and have it appear as if we are home -- even when we aren't. We installed the lock—which was easy (our Schlage lock needed longer screws, which was easy to pick up at a lock store) and we had a company install the doorbell cam. We are very happy with our purchase!
