An improvement over previous gen, now recommended Posted by: from: on I've owned the prior generation (non "homekit" version that comes in many colors) and this one is much better. 1- It connects to my phone more reliably than the previous gen 2- The battery cover is implemented much better (the previous gen would often fall off, this one uses magnets) As far as I can tell, these are the main feature changes. I don't use any of the Homekit features so I can't comment on those. Auto-unlock is still a little unreliable. Sometimes I get home, and it doesn't unlock so I do it with the app, and then I'm walking around my kitchen a few minutes later and I hear it auto-unlock, and my phone buzzes. LOL. Good thing I don't live in a bad neighborhood ;-) For us, it's "good enough" and the addition of the Keypad completes the system.

Excellent lock with lots of promise Posted by: from: on Smart locks are going to change the way we live. They are the most exciting, useful and promising part of the "smart home" eco-system. I believe that they will do to locks what digital cameras did to film. Installation is very simple: not many parts, very clear instructions. I had to get new screws for my Emtek lock (the company told me that this is very uncommon with Emtek locks) since mine were too long. The lock connected quickly and works nicely in tandem with the August doorbell cam which bridges it to the world via my home wifi (it does this automatically). The things that have been very valuable: + Today I unlocked the door remotely from my office for the babysitter and kids (she forgot her key). Saved lots of time and trouble for everybody. + The door can be set up to unlock automatically when I return home. I love not having to fumble for my keys and put bags/kids/sporting equipment down to unlock the door. + The door can also auto-lock when I leave the house and exceed a certain distance. I don't worry about leaving the door unlocked by mistake. + Being able to grant and later revoke access to people is awesome. I never liked giving the keys to all sorts of people who may lose them (my kids did all the time). + Unlike other locks (I have a keypad type lock on a side door), this lock isn't visible on the outside so it keeps the original look and feel of the lock I chose to go with the house's external style and color. The software isn't yet perfect but it's been getting better and better and it already does everything it needs to do.

Great for sidedoor Posted by: from: on First of all, I want to put my review in context. I bought this for use in a house with very ornate/expensive hardware on the doors, so I was focused on how to install the various products, keypad, Doorbell-cam and smart lock without replacing any of my existing hardware. It was not practical to use the smart lock on our front door as it did not have a traditional deadbolt, but we did find the Smart-Lock and keypad a perfect fit for our backdoor. It is a great solution if we forget our key, or need to have a neighbor come in and feed the cat. I find the design very appealing: hi-tech but minimalist, and so far it has operated flawlessly in that capacity. We also have a remote gate, with two way voice but the doorbell-cam finally gives us a way to see who is at the gate. Only reason I give this 4.5 not 5 stars is its incompatibility with high-end hardware.

Only lock you will need! Posted by: from: on Had this August about a month now, loving it and make life much more easier. I live in a 2 stories house and my room is all the way to the back of the house, every time we had friend or family come over I alway make a long trip to the door but now with August save me lot of time to clean up be4 anyone come in house. Btw I also had ring door bell so every time someone at the door I alway know who to open for.

Good and will get better Posted by: from: on I love my August lock! I have had a few issues with it! My wife and mother-in-law can not use Siri to unlock the door. I have spoken with customer service ( who are very nice and attentive) couldn't figure out and sent the log note to the engineering team. But I have only had a couple of situations where the auto unlock didn't work but 90% of time is perfect! I have faith that August will continue to move forward and keep improving the lock!

Works great with Siri Posted by: from: New York, NY on Works pretty great. Range is good. Geofencing works accurately that it unlocks the door when I am nearby. Getting homekit enabled version was better decision I made. This works flawlessly with Siri and if you have an apple tv in your home, you can access the lock remotely as well.

Inconsistent performance, risk of lock opening Posted by: from: on I purchased the August lock and the Connect for wifi access to the lock - the pieces are marketed to be easy to use and install - I struggled to get consistent performance with the lock system for 9 months. I found the August lock more complicated than the marketing materials made it out to be and the instructions themselves were challenging to understand at times. Security for my home and family are a priority so I'd expect a lock to be layered with extra safeguards and perhaps more involved from a technology and/or installation standpoint but I would want those aspects to be found in the lock itself, not in the setup and use of the lock for everyday applications. I had some random instances of the lock unlocking itself when I first had it - I called August customer support and they felt it was probably an issue with the install or the set up the lock with my phone. I reinstalled everything and had several months of the lock performing as anticipated. About 3 months later, the lock started again with unlocking randomly. I called August and they reported that they were aware of cases where the lock would open unprompted and the reasoning ranged from the lock's proximity to cellular towers or some of the settings which were available as part of the setup options. I finally had to replace the August with a Kwikset Kevo lock - I couldn't chance a potential security risk should the lock open at the wrong time.

August HomeKit Package Posted by: from: on We ordered two HomeKit versions of the locks, the camera/doorbell and the keypad. 1. The lock itself is HUGE. Not very attractive even if the finish matches other hardware. It operates smoothly and unlocks as it should when you're nearby. Still the knob was too large for my wife's hand. You must have a deadbolt installed as the August lock is a retrofit only including the rear part of the lock. 2. Each lock requires its own August Connect to act as the gateway between the Bluetooth and wireless connections. Each Connect must be within 20 feet of the lock which isn't always easy as there may not be electricity in the entryway. The Connect is required if you want to view or control the state of the lock remotely. 3. The Keypad is simple and does its job as expected. 4. The camera/doorbell is a total mess. Setup is easy but it goes offline frequently; sometimes it will come back online but more often than not, it will just stay offline. There was a "secret" way to reset the camera in the iOS software but, apparently, it no longer works after an update. This is a problem because if the camera is offline, you have to remove it from the wall which means having to remove the security screw; not an easy task. Then, you have to push the reset button and reverse the process. Picture is clear and the voice is easy to understand on both ends. It does include a wedge for doorbells close to the door. 5. In addition to the fact that you can't reset the doorbell in the iOS software, you can't do a lot because there is NO documentation. You would think that shipping their locks for a couple of years, they would have some documentation even online. The only support is the FAQ and installation video for each product. There's a lot to be customized but just try figuring out how to get there. Beyond that, contact support. 6. Support is decent. Submit a ticket and you're promised you'll be contacted by the next day. Each time, I waited 24 hours and then called them directly because I hadn't heard from anyone. The only phone number access will be sent to you in a receipt for your support ticket. I have given up on August as a viable solution after waiting for months for a promised delivery. It was a waste of time and I replaced the August system with a Kwikset Kēvo which had an easier setup. One has to buy a Bluetooth Gateway but one is sufficient for multiple locks. It doesn't have a keypad but two real keys, two e-Keys (additional e-Keys are $0.99) and a key fob. In addition, I installed a Ring Pro and Ring Cameras. All-in-all, a much easier installation and they work flawlessly. In addition, the Ring and Kēvo work together so I can unlock the door from the Ring app.
