Wow. This may be his best body of work since Back at One. Not to say he did not have several standouts albums and records since that time, but as a whole album, this album is very cohesive. His last 2 albums, More Than Words and Just Me seemed more like a collection of songwriter demo's with a few great songs sprinkled within. On Better, Brian took all of his influences (past and present) and melded them into something wholly unique. His production chops have increased substantially. Gone are the stripped down, demo like programmed songs on his last 2 records. Nearly every track on Better uses live instrumentation. The song writing is fresh too. He could have went back to his comfort zone and gave us a bunch of piano ballads with layers of intricate background vocals. Instead, these songs lean heavily on his lead vocal almost like a very polished and well produced live album. As fans of Brian we tend to want what initially drew us to him: Piano Ballads, Crazy Stevie Wonder-like vocal gymnastics and family friendly lyrics. I'm glad that Brian was brave enough to give us an "evolution" on this record. He sounds inspired again and it will be interesting to see what he comes up with next.
