Best Buy Customer Reviews

I've been around many speakers in life and have often been amazed to how Bose can get BIG sound into a small box. I bought a pair of Bose 8" Direct/Reflecting® Bookshelf Speakers to be hooked up to my A/V player. Before I continue, I need to admit that I wanted a complete 5.1 surround sound experience and thought I needed two floor standing speakers, an earth shaking sub woofer, two rear speakers and a center speaker to get that really BIG room filling sound. Anyway, I started with this pair and put them in the front to test them out. My jaw dropped to the floor when I played a movie and a music video with only these speakers. They in fact filled the entire room much, much better than my other four speakers I had just unplugged before testing this pair. One year later and I'm still impressed by these speakers. They are now the only pair I own in the house. If you're tight on space and want that room filling sound then get a pair of these. You'll be glad you did.

301's Deliver Great Sound !
Posted by: OrangeDog2010 from: South Georgia on
I have been using my Bose 301's for about one month now and I am amazed each time I turn my receiver on. The sound is phenomenal, and better than anything I have ever heard. As stated in another review, when playing music I am also hearing things in songs that I did not know were there before!
The bass sound from the 301’s was acceptable, (but I wanted "more bass" for gaming, movies, etc.) so I purchased an 8” subwoofer which complements my setup very well. I also ordered the Bose speaker stands to raise the 301's off the floor and it does make a difference!
Lastly, all and all I wish I had purchased these 301’s years ago. I am simply amazed with the Bose sound quality.

Very Nice Speakers
Posted by: InfiniteT from: Seattle on
I have an older pair of the series 4 for several years now and love them. they are now used downstairs in my dining room. These series 5's took over on my main entertainment system> They are great. The sould is very clear and crisp. Very defined clear highs and nice tight bass. Thier styling looks good and is well designed for great sound coverage. If i use just the two speakers and the sub, i still get incredible sound with a "surrounding" effect. When i listen to music, I use it that way. As long as you have a good amp and source, you will hear things you never heared before in the lower end sets. Low or even high volumes, it makes no difference in quality.
If you are looking for top shelf performance without shelling out thousands, there are a good choice and make a solid set of fronts in a surround system.

Good for stereo not for HT
Posted by: BoseOrNot from: Salt Lake City on
The Bose 301 is a really good pair of speakers for a stereo setup, because they fill the whole room with reflected sound and pretty full highs and lows.
In the same token, it is not good for a HT setup it will not pin point the source of the sound like a 5.1 system will do in movies.
Also because of the reflection technology it lacks sound staging and imaging even in the stereo setup. So depending on what you like and need, the Bose 301 can serve the purpose correctly or badly.
I listen mostly classical and jazz and I'm not interested in the debate of Bose vs. others. It is just my opinion and experience.

BOSE 301 series V = best bookshelf speaker
Posted by: musicpeson from: seattle on
Small package but huge sound. DO NOT LISTEN to bose bashers, they do not know what they talking about???????????. the bose 301 produces amazing sound, really crips and clear at high volume, it is better than all the all the speaker out there cost two or three times at much. it has very nice feature like" Automatic protection circuitry prevents drivers from being overdriven and provides increased reliability while minimizing interference with the listening experience". therefore, those bose speakers will last for ever while all the other brand speakers do not have that kind of nice feature, that is why they will not last for long. there are a lot of high technology inside these bose speaker. i would buy these speakers again if mine broke up.the bose 301 series v is perfectly for music even for movie.they are perfet for who love KARAOKE too. it is also really affordable price. everybody can buy it. thanks a lot MR. BOSE. keep up your good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Icing on the cake!
Posted by: KRod from: on
Purchased a Bose Acoustimass 10 series V surround system (5.1) and I wasn't getting enough midrange crunch from the setup. Allot of bass and high tones (which were crystal clear), but the lack of midrange for music and movies was too much to ignore. Upgraded my receiver to 7.1 and purchased these 301's hoping they would round out the sound. I was not disappointed!!! Using the 301's as front main L/R and the receiver allows the already installed Acoustimass speakers as front L/R high via bi-amping. It sounds incredible!!! Highly recommend these speakers and this arrangement for those looking for the ultimate setup.

Excellent value for money
Posted by: Naresh from: Aurora, IL on
I have used this speaker pair along with Bose surround and Center speakers for my home theatre for over 5 years and the overall effect is fantastic considering that all the 5 speakers together costed me under $700.
When listening to music I use only the Bose 301's without the surround or center speakers and they sound terrific. It reproduces a rich output of high frequencies as well as a sharp deep bass. I powered them through a basic Yamaha 5.1 rcvr.
If you are on a budget I would definitely recommend these speakers whether its for audio listening or to be used with a home theater arrangement.

Awesome with a good setup
Posted by: Tecromancer from: KY on
Bose 301s are awesome speakers when setup correctly. I've heard many people knock Bose, but typically they've not heard them setup correctly. These speakers are backward reflecting, meaning they need a wall behind them to sound correct, and they can't be put flush against the wall. Once setup correctly, and balanced properly with a subwoofer for movies, the sound is pretty awesome.
Two issues I have with Bose: First is the push button connections. At the price of 301s, I really feel a better connection should be available. Second is the lack of a matching center channel. The Bose center channel would match the 161s well, but not so much the 301, neither acoustically nor visually.

Perfect for music. Great for movies.
Posted by: jtrick8806 from: Dayton, OH on
I've been using my 301's for about a week now, and I'm still stunned each time I use them. The depth of the sound is better than anything I've ever experienced. I'm hearing things in songs that I didn't know was there before! The bass is what you would expect from speakers this size, not extremely powerful, but nice. I also purchased a Klipsch 8" subwoofer, and it compliments the 301's very well. Feels like I'm in a movie theater when I'm watching movies.
To get the most out of these speakers, buy a nice receiver to power them.

I don't understand the Bose bashers, but I am thoroughly impressed with the sound quality these speakers put out in such a small package. I just threw away modified house speakers I had hooked up to a 300 watt HT amp that has A-B outputs...and for those who fault Bose 301's on the HT experience, this is where you're going wrong. This speaker system is not intended to pick up 5.1 signals or beyond and compensate for that sound. BUT, I will tell you this much, if you have them running along side your surround sound (which is usually in your A speaker slot), GET RID OF YOUR SUBWOOFER! You will NOT need it! The bottom in this little monster is nuts! I have nothing but positive feedback on this speaker system. If you have not bought Bose, this is an excellent entry level system to try. Please do NOT try and run these out of a cheap unit!
