One of the best printers I've ever owned
Posted by: Reviewer from: on
I've owned a lot of printers in my lifetime. This is by far the best for a home use printer. Brother is so much better than HP. I've always had problems with HP, so I went out on a limb and bought a Brother. And I love it. The HP kept dropping my wifi network. This one does not have a problem. This printer allows me to print from my iPhone, iPad and wireless from my pc. The scanning is so easy, the copying is fabulous for a family. You can scan it from your computer or from the machine. You can scan to a file or send it directly to email too. I love the duplex printing, to save money on paper. This is the printer for every family especially with school work and other household paperwork. I highly recommend this printer. Ditch the HP printers and give Brother a chance, and you will not regret it.
FYI - I got it on sale, I think around $79. I can't remember the exact price. But I did notice the price went up $20 the next day.

Speedy Little Printer
Posted by: sashimineko from: on
So far I'm supper happy with this little printer. It has a lot smaller footprint than the old HP I replaced it with. Even with "quiet" printing it's super fast. No paper jams so far. Really large tray that keeps the paper inside, vs laying outside to get dusty. I love the autofeed scanning, saves me time when scanning multiple documents.
I print a LOT of pdf patterns, and I still have tons of ink. I think this printer has more than paid for itself already in just ink savings over the HP I had. Also the airprint/wireless print is so nice. Can print off my phone, my tablet, my pc, and my husband doesn't have to fight with Microsoft's homegroups to be able to print off his pc. Haha
So yeah, I'd buy this lil' guy in a heartbeat. Great for small home offices and just general home printing! :)

This printer is very easy to use. It's great for printing documents. Also it was easy to do the wireless setup. Good printer for the price.

Impressed, have been using HP Printer all my life!
Posted by: Indy from: on
Great printer coming from having so many HP Printers. I can't recall when I had a non-HP printer. Got tired of the build quality and cost of ink. Debated between the Brother and Canon because I was looking for an AIO without a power brick (yes, can't figure out why HP always have to have an extra power brick - pet peeve, inc desk clutter).
Macbook Pro 13 Retina
Cheap TP-Link wifi router
- Easy to set up and prints on both sides.
- Didn't install any software at all.
- Setup wifi using the front LCD panel and found my SSID and enter the password (harkens back to the old days of when you had to text using just the numeric keypad on a candy bar phone)
- OS X recognized it through wifi and just added the printer in the printer settings menu.
- Scans using native OS X Image capture software.
- This is debatable. Was used to only one cartridge for color but with three different color cartridge I think in the long run it may be more cost effective since you are only replacing the primary color instead of having to change out the entire cartridge.
- I think the print head is on the printer itself rather than on the cartridge which may explain why the ink is cheaper.
- Very sleek, and I like the paper tray that is similar to a laser printer, the document feeder folds out of the way flush when not using.
- NO FAST or DRAFT mode to save ink. I tried installing the software using Windows 7 running on a virtual machine but can't change quality setting.

Good Printer for the Price
Posted by: Peachy from: on
I have this printer's predecessor & it has worked just fine for home use for a couple years. In fact it's still running fine. So I knew what I was getting when I bought this one. It is S L O W and has to reset itself after each single copy and that is aggravating and time consuming. And it does not have a very good paper feed. Papers tend to get stuck or come through in bunches, half the print on one sheet and the other half on another sheet. And when that happens, and the paper jam is cleared out, the printer has to be turned off completely to reset it because the jam code gets stuck in its memory. And lastly, after taking out the paper feed tray & replacing it, the printer requires a 1 or 2 to be selected before I can print again. So if these things won't bother you, it's a good inexpensive choice because it does print well. I wonder why Brother requires different ink cartridges for essentially the same machine but a new model year. Hmmmm.

Great printer with many Wifi options
Posted by: ErzaScralet from: on
I needed a printer that had Google Cloud Print to print documents and labels from a Chromebook. This one was on sale at the time for $59.99, and to replace the ink it was very cheap compared to other similarly priced printers. I use this mostly to print labels for shipping, documents for school and scan files to upload directly to my Google Drive, and it does it all well. The only minor complaints is it prints slow compared to my previous printer (Canon PIXMA MG5320) and the Wifi takes about a minute from when printer turns on to actually work. Both very minor complaints, so I won't take off anything for that. I've seen this go for as low as $49.99, so I can definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a document printer with great options for wireless printing.

A Poor Choice
Posted by: Burt from: on
We sadly purchased this printer after Xmas on sale.
This printer never worked correctly after the first color cartridges were wiped out
and that happens real quick folks .I had to call the help line who were nice but powerless to help with this lemon.
We ran thru 6 cartridges which never worked unless you ran a series of tests which wiped out the very expensive ink jets and then called the help desk for help.
It was a vicious cycle and then the printer started to jam and jam and the carriages would be wiped out within days after testing and minor use.
We just tossed it out because it was too much trouble and terribly expensive and very unreliable .
Do not make the same mistake we did.

Decent Job Overall BUT Ink Consumption Sucks
Posted by: KHLee from: on
Overall it's a decent machine for the price. It does the job BUT there's a humongous BUT to this printer.
I bought this printer on November 22, 2015. In less than 7 months, after printing only a handful of color photos (and I mean only a handful) and hardly anything else as I have another printer that I use virtually all the time, this printer has run out of Yellow ink. The printer is self-cleaning so often it drains the ink. I wouldn't be surprised that it will soon be running out of cyan and magenta inks as well. I guess they sell the printer relatively cheap but make up for it by having the printer self-clean so often that buyers are compelled to purchase ink more frequently. Overall, bad value for the money!!!

brother mfc-485dw all in one printer
Posted by: SILKYSLIM from: on
I OWN A BROTHER MFC-290C AND A MFC-J475DW, IN WHICH THEY BOTH ARE STILL OPERATING JUST FINE. I LOVE THE WAY WAY THE 290C PRINTS PICTURES. THE 475 PRINTS VERY FAST. MY FRIEND LIKES MY PRINTERS SO I BOUGHT THE MFC-485DW FOR HIS BIRTHDAY. IT WAS SO SIMPLE TO SET UP, AND WORKS VERY WELL IT PRINTS VERY CLEAR AND FAST AND IS THE PERFECT SIZE. . I BOUGHT IT MAINLY BECAUSE HE NEEDED A FAX MACHINE. I LOVE THIS MACHINE SO MUCH I WENT AND BOUGHT ONE FOR MY SELF. NOW I HAVE THREE. I SAY I BUY THEM IN CASE ONE BREAKS BUT SO FAR NONE OF THEM DO. I HAVE HAD THE 290C FOR OVER SEVEN YEARS AND NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES. I LOVE BROTHER MACHINES AND RECOMMEND THEM HIGHLY.

Not a good printer
Posted by: jwrig from: on
I jumped at the great sale price of this printer, but really regretted it. It is TERRIBLY slow, first of all. Second, we could never get the wifi right, and the technical support from Brother was not helpful
