Would have given 5 stars if it worked

Great receiver, very clean sound at high volumes, excellent picture quality. Would have given this product 5 stars as the sound quality is superior to the yamaha receiver I replaced...if it worked. Wonderful for 3 or so months, and then the power circuit failed and I'm stuck waiting on customer service to do something. Will avoid denon going forward as this is a known issue with this product.

Great sound output. Nice and clear, really making shows where the actors mumble a lot, like the walking dead, a lot more enjoyable. It also makes action movies sound just like I'm at a movie theater.
Only ding on the receiver is the HDMI is not ARC, so you'll need an optical cord to pass sound from the TV (ie: netflix app on the TV) to the receiver.

All the terrible reviews were true.

This is my 2nd Denon receiver. I bought it to replace a Denon that was malfunctioning yet was less than 5 years old. The only reason I stuck with Denon at the time was ease. I'd just unplug everything from one receiver & plug it all into the new one. They're very similar & you'd figure it would be that easy.
Within 2 weeks the new Denon was dropping the handshake with every device plugged into it. To get my 3D movies to work I had to turn the receiver off, this is the only way the "pass-through" would allow my DVD player to "find" the 3D display. As for watching cable? The Denon drops it's handshake with the cable box every 5 minutes, literally. It's beyond awful.
I wrote to both Denon's customer service & their main contact address on their website & was met by silence. I wasn't looking for much here. I went with an entry level receiver because I wanted to be able to plug a bunch of HDMI cables into one thing & then out to my TV. This lousy device doesn't even handle that meager task with any reliability at all.
I'll never have a Denon anything in my home again. I can't wait to replace this and then throw it off my roof. It may even be come a range target. It's worse than useless because it cost $250.

great receiver, but no ARC

Sound quality and power is quite good. Makes watching movies on blue-ray or from streaming channels feel like I'm actually at the movie theaters. Easy to set up, clearly marked hdmi ports in the rear. Easy to stream music from my apple devices via Bluetooth over the Denon.
Only reason for 4 out of 5 stars is no ARC, so you will need an optical cord to run sound from a smart tv to the Denon.

Doesn't work with Roku 4
Posted by: Nighthawk from: on
I bought this to use with my Roku 4 with 4k. I was excited because this seemed like a good deal with its 3 HDMI 2.2 HDCP 2.2 ports but after I connected my Roku 4 to one of the 4k ports it wouldn't display, I tried connecting it to other ports and still no luck, tired other devices in those ports and other cables and they all worked but it would not work with the Roku 4. After looking on Amazon it looks like others have had similar issues with their Roku 4 not working with this device.
I will be returning it.

Over heats and turns off- now I need to disconnect and send back to service shop out of state- totally frustrated. Their on line assistance cannot help.

Amazing how this has worked out for me
Posted by: RobertHarlan from: on
I originally had gone to Best Buy to get a Pioneer 5.1 receiver to connect my 3.1 setup. They had only one Pioneer 5.1 in store, and that was earmarked for another customer who was due in the store any moment. The store did have this Denon model, and even though it was 5.2 and I didn't think I needed that 2nd subwoofer line, it was only slightly more expensive than the Pioneer I had looked at, and had comparable performance specs and customer ratings. So I went ahead and purchased it. I had never had a receiver before, but the Denon has been remarkably user friendly, and it's customability is amazing. Not only that, but I noticed that my picture quality for both my Blu-ray player and DirecTV receiver seemed to be boosted. As it turned out, I needed and wanted a 2nd subwoofer, so purchasing the Denon turned out to be a good deal. If I have one complaint, it's that my Xbox seems incapable of hooking up to the receiver and sending video to my tv. But given how old the Xbox technology is, I can't really fault the Denon design for this, though it would have been nice. This unit has worked out very well for me on everything else though.

Took item back. It kept going into protection mode. Returned it for A Pioneer Elite which has been working flawlessly. First ever purchase of a Denon product recommended by Best Buy employee, upon return the Best Buy employee stated that there is lots of problems with model.

Got the unit of the box. Installed. Calibrated. All easy and went as expected. Then attempted firmware update. After 30 minutes I get an Update Failed message. Now the unit won't work. It's a brick. Just sits here and says Update Failed. Denon customer support isn't available on the weekend. So here I am with a useless piece of hardware.

Excellent Receiver. Amazing Performance.

This is a great receiver for the price. I have a Sony 5.1 speaker system and it works seamlessly with this. I love the performance. Very effective with a PS4, an Apple TV and a standard DVR. The sound is unmatched. I used to own a Yamaha before this, and its safe to say I would never go back. I would certainly recommend this to all you sound geeks out there. Totally worth the money.
