Scans photos, negatives & slides
Posted by: Narfcat from: Largo, FL on
I bought this scanner to scan all my personal photos, negatives and slides as well as those of my relatives. I've scans several thousand photos, almost a thousand slides, and several negatives with excellent results. I love the scanner. I recently took this on a trip to visit family in another state and scanned photos in three locations while here. It's portable and easy to use. I would recommend it to anyone. If you do not have Photoshop, I would recommend the V600 to anyone who does not have a photo editing program.

At this price point, the Epson V550 is hard to beat. It's easy to scan any size negative using the software to adjust size, and the quality of both film and scanned images is great. However, like another review discussed, the lack of quality control in this product is unacceptable. I've purchased a total of four of these scanners from Best Buy. I owned the first for about four months, scanned hundreds of slides and negatives, and about a thousand prints. Worked flawlessly with APS and produced a great finished product. My mom needed a scanner so I gave her mine with the intention of just buying another of the same model. And so the drama begins. Each one of the other three scanners had dust under the scanner bed. Yep, all three. Once you open the scanner lid and hit "preview" while in EPSON Scan, the light moves down and back up the scanner bed and one is clearly able to see all the specs of dust under the glass. On all three scanners, most of the debris was up at the top. I'm scanning too many negatives and photos to simply edit out the specs. Oh, and let us not forget, these were all right out of the box. Seriously, Epson, three scanners. Frankly, I'm willing to bet there are many who own this scanner who may have not noticed the issue. There are too many reviews on other websites for Epson not to acknowledge this quality control problem. If you are one of the lucky ones who were able to get your hands on a scanner that didn't suffer these issues, you have a great piece of equipment.

I have a large amount of slides to convert to digital and after reading reviews of several types of scanners, I chose the Epson V550. I'm very happy that I did. It was easy to set up and easy to use. The quality of the pictures I'm getting from the slides is outstanding. I couldn't be more pleased. the scanner is able to handle four slides at a time and after using a preview feature, adjustments can be made regarding brightness, contrast, etc. the speed of scanner seems reasonable. the scanner actually has several other options and features for the more professionally inclined and/or creative individual. I simply cranked out over a thousand slides and never had a single problem. I did try scanning a hard copy color photograph just to see the result and the results were as though I had a professional reproduce my photo. This is a great scanner.

Best scanner that I've ever used
Posted by: Videolad from: Greensboro, NC on
My previous scanners have all been HP. I currently use a Mac computer. My last HP scanner was working well but I upgraded to "Mavericks" and it was no longer compatible. I went to HP for their patch and to my surprise there was none. Epson was recommended to me and when I went to Epson's website, I found that Epson had a patch for their product.
My Epson V550 is great! It scans anything including 35mm film negatives, 35mm color slides and 2.25" film negatives. The scanner doesn't require a warm-up period. The results are terrific. Best scanner that I've ever used.
Setup was easy but I do recommend that you telephone tech support to help, if needed. My daughter is now the owner of my past HP and had it not been for my upgrade to Mavericks I never would have tried this V550. It's a win-win for us.

Good machine poor Quality control

I really liked this scanner. It was very easy to install, and to operate. It was amazingly fast, and could scan multiple photos at once and label them individually without typing a letter. When you are scanning a lot of pictures this feature is great. The problem was that under the glass was little particles that were stuck to it and that showed up in the scanned image. So you would have a very high quality picture scanned with dots all over it. This had to be from assembly in a non dust free environment, so the scanner went back to the store, and I am upset about that because it was the easiest scanner I had ever used.

Exceptional quality scans from older color photos

Fast scans, perfect images, what's not to like? Excellent value for the money. I use it for a lot of Throw Back Thursday Facebook photos from the 30's to present and all come out perfect!

This is a very good scanner with high pixel capability which will allow you to take a small picture and change/ print a decent 8x10 while cropping as needed. The editing software appears to be a cut down version and does not seem to fix any scratches on the photos. I would recommend using a photo editor program after scanning . Overall an excellent scanner for the price

Great scanner for converting slides
Posted by: bluemerit from: San Antonio, TX on
Bought this to replace an older Epson model. So far I have been quite impressed with its ability to scan old slides. No "warm-up" time is great! I haven't had problems with slow scanning as some have, but I might be scanning at a lower resolution. Does an okay job at color correction tho some of our older stuff needs to be worked on in our photo-editing program (which doesn't come with the scanner package).
Only "not so great" is the loading of the scanner. If the tray for the slides is just a tad "off", it's a problem. But I chalk that up to user error rather than scanner error.
All-in-all a great scanner for the price. Got it on sale, so it definitely was a great buy!

The quality of the scanned photos is great, but the quality of the scanned negatives is amazing. Really happy about my purchase.

Great Color Photo Scanner
Posted by: JohnH from: Knoxville, TN on
I purchased the Epson model V550 Photo Scanner based upon previous reviewers high marks. Let me join the crowd - I like the unit and features. I wanted a quality scanner to copy old family photos that was simple to operate. This model fits the bill. I wished there was a means to scan with an automatic feeder but at a higher price point. Anyway I recommend this mid-priced scanner - well pleased.
