Stay aware on the road with this Escort Passport X70 0100018-2 radar detector, which relies on laser sensors to provide long-range warning against X-, K- and Ka-band radar. Mute and automute functions lower the volume during long encounters with radar.

best radar detector for traveling
Posted by: 27allen from: on
We have owned many radar detectors and this by far has been the very best. Most radar detectors go off continuously when driving through cities or small towns. Usually we disconnect it because it becomes so annoying. This particular one only goes off when there is cop. It gives plenty of notice and has saved us from getting several speeding tickets. We travel quite often and have found that it works in all of the southern states. It is a little pricey but is certainly worth every penny.

This radar detector replaced my old escort passport x50. It’s still functional but I was fed up with the false alerts I was getting from the anti-collision sensors installed in many new cars. At first I was thinking of getting the escort 9500ix but that one has the old DPS technology that will not filter those type of sensors too well.
I’ve read that the passport x70 is the best band for the buck. It has the latest DPS technology to filter out those anti-collision sensors and does a very good job in detecting radars. Based on the escort website the x70 is the replacement of the passport x50.
Its been over a month since I’ve purchased the x70 and so far I’m impressed with it’s ability to block false alerts. And it’s as capable as my old x50 when it comes to detecting police radars.
The only issue I have is the LED display, it’s very weak. You can set it to the highest illumination setting but during daytime driving I can barely see the display. I still give it 5 stars since it does everything else very well.

I think I paid around $300 to $350. Not the top end model, but I was leery to go with the under $100 models. Not sure if I could have gotten same performance our of the lesser priced models. I average about 1 speeding ticket per year on about 5 round-trip road trips per year. So, hopefully, this year's ticket $ went towards paying for this detector. It has saved me 5 times on two road trips so far. I recommend this product. It detects everything which can be noisy at times. Conveniently, it comes with a mute button on the plug for that episode of detection. You can monitor the bar graph to determine if radar detection is ongoing and forgo the noise. The mute button is on the plug so you don't have to reach too far to mute it (versus the device on your winshield).

Do your research

I'll start off by saying do your research on price and functionality. I bought this detector for 237.00 at bestbuy after they price matched Amazon. As long as it's "shipped and sold by Amazon" you'll get the price match. Now as for functionality, there are several places in my daily commute that set the detector off, in the same place. "Auto learn" to get rid of the nuisance alarms would be great, but I bought the detector knowing it didn't have that function. But if that's gonna be a deal breaker for you, look at a different model. As for performance, there's been several times I've been disappointed with the range, where I've felt the detector went off too late to save me from a potential ticket, if I was speeding. There's been a few instances how ever where I've been impressed with the detector going off at least 1/4 mile before a hill and a cop hanging out on an off ramp on the other side. If I was a high risk driver looking for superior performance I would probably spend the extra $350 and get the max360 (assuming it's better performance). For an everyday commuter and occasional speeder this detector will do fine. I'm only saying this because I paid 237, for $300 I would probably wait it out for a sale. Don't make the mistake however and buy the 9500ix. It has great reviews and a TON of them, however they date back to 2007, the technology in it is almost 10 years old... The review asks if I would recommend it to a friend, to some I would, some I wouldn't.

Quiet Radar Detector

This is my first Escort since their original detector and it does not disappoint. You can configure this unit to not detect X band which is not used in my state, also you can configure which K/KA bands it detects (one is not used in the US). You can configure the high quality OLED display to match the color scheme of your vehicle's gauges. Bottom line the configuration options in conjunction with the quality of the unit make it a recommended choice especially for eliminating false alarms from many sources (including the radar used by blind spot detectors, which rendered by previous Cobra unit next to useless). Only issue that I have is the Bluetooth features (which allow you to display your speed and the limit in that area) requires a special power cord which runs almost $100, with a subscription to Escort's service via a smartphone app. Sorry not paying $100 for a cable and a monthly fee for the subscription service. Feel the cable should be standard with the unit.

Not really worth the cost

I was expecting just a little more out if this product for what I paid. Says it's Bluetooth compatible but to use the app and the bluetooth you need an additional $90 Bluetooth cord that is not included! I also has to return the first one I bought because it stopped working 20 days after I bought it. Lots of false warnings too.... Just really disappointed for cost

Fairly quiet compared to previous brand.

Bought this to replace a cheaper radar detector that lasted only 2 yrs. This is more compact which I like.

We are very pleased with this purchase. This radar detector notifies you of KA bands with plenty of time to slow down. The display is nice and easy to read. Great purchase!!
