Q: does the computer have to be on when downloading?
A: Seriously - Yes.
A: It's as easy as using any other storage medium. Not sure if you are asking about the LaCie unit or generally, but, yes the LaCie performs flawlessly. Cannot speak to the future of the unit, but being that it employs a Seagate HDD, I suspect it will be fine. LaCie is a great company and gives the consumer a sexy alternative to the pedestrian hardware peddled around town.
Q: What is the life expectancy of this external?
A: Although stated MTBFs may be greater if a drive is used daily and holds data that is critical to you I would suggest replacing it every 18 to 24 months. Given the cost of HDDs today it is much less expensive to replace a drive than to try and recover data from it. That said, I have drives that are six years old and have been spinning flawlessly. Question is: Do you feel lucky?
