LG SH4-Better than expected
Posted by: auh2064 from: on
I had intended to buy the Vizio 38 inch bar with the sub woofer for $158 but was shown this LG SH4 on sale for $189 at Best Buy. Turns out there was an open box deal for this unit at $141. With the 2 week exchange policy-Why Not?
Getting the unit out of its strange box was the most challenging part of the installation. I was amazed to find that all of the pieces were sealed in their original packaging.
Set-up: Plug the soundbar in, connect the supplied optical cable to the TV, plug the sub woofer in, put the batteries in the remote and press the power button.
An inexpensive sound bar is not going to compare with a 6 speaker surround system but it is a HUGE improvement on the sound put out by a thin flat screen. The small sub woofer adds a spacious and immersive quality. Great for movies and music. I had been thinking that I would not get a soundbar with a sub but that would have been a big mistake.
I have the soundbar installed under a 48 inch flat screen in a 12x14 room. I was surprised at how impressive the sound was.
Pairing the LG SH4 with blue tooth took about two minutes. The soundbar serves as an audio system when it isn't serving up TV and movies.
The build quality is excellent. I like the metal grill and the sleek appearance of the bar. No distracting lights or logos on the front.
This model puts out 300 watts although such ratings are more complicated than might be expected. I was impressed that the LG works with my Sony TV remote without having to program the remote.
I guess the 'Sound Synch' works.
Bottom line: for less than $200, the LG SH4 delivers impressive sound from the sources that it connects with. Watch TV, movies or listen to music from your portable pads/phones, This is a versatile product that delivers more than I expected it would.

Great for the price

Bought this on open box... I'm using it as a compliment to our living room tv. It sounds great. The only knock is that the volume increments are too big on some channels. It's too soft at one level and too loud when you go one notch up on the volume... Its never just right...

Way Beyond TV Sound
Posted by: Jackson19 from: on
I first bought a Sony Sound Plate, but not enough bass/subwoofer. I wanted something with more of the cinema experience capability. To get that, a sound bar with a separate subwoofer is essential.
The LG SH4 goes way beyond what a tv can do, and does much better than an all-in-one sound bar/plate.
It has three settings. Standard, Cinema, and ASC (adaptive sound control). They are all strong settings but cinema will knock the socks off. The sound feels like it is everywhere and coming from different directions. It has more of an overall effect so the voices of the characters may be less prominent. Standard switches the equation around a bit and makes the voices more prominent. ASC optimizes the sound in real time, supposedly. I can't tell much difference from standard however.
The subwoofer has more than enough ooomph (for me anyway, I could turn it up much louder if I wanted) to get that rumble - like say, when Harry Potter gets tons letters all at once through the fireplace.
I was concerned about setting up the wireless subwoofer. Turns out all that has to be done is plug it in, it will pair with the main unit by itself. It can be plugged in across the room if one wishes to fill the room with more sound without issues.
So yes, for the money ($220.00 after $50 off) its definitely worth it.

Good sound for the money
Posted by: Eric123 from: on
Was pleasantly surprised at the level of sound and bass that comes out of this very affordable soundbar. We have it in a very large two-story room that takes a lot to fill with sound, and this does the trick. Only criticism is the wireless sub comes with a very short power cord, so we weren't able to place it exactly where we wanted to without an extension.

Great Entry Level Sound Bar
Posted by: Jeremy from: on
This sound bar was incredibly easy to set up and puts out incredible sound for what the price point suggests. Love the "Night Mode" button on the remote that instantly turns the subwoofer down to a low level. It comes in handy at night, like it suggests, and also during those random moments in movies and TV shows where the bass obnoxiously drowns out everything you're trying to hear. I love that when I connect my laptop via Bluetooth listening to Spotify, I can skip and pause tracks with the buttons on the sound bar remote.
This sound bar is entry level, meaning you're not going to be getting simulated 5.1 sound or DTS or anything, but if you're looking for a fairly powerful and easy to use 2.1 sound bar this is for you.
Also, I am using this with a Sony 55" xbr850c and have had no compatibility issues. I am connected via optical audio cable. The sound bar turns on automatically when I turn the tv on, and the volume can be controlled via the tv.

Great sound that fills my space
Posted by: jpdjr from: on
I have a small area where the tv and soundbar are located and this definitely fills this area with great sound quality. Not only that but when I turn it up it fills the entire lower half of my house with undistorted sound.

Great big sound!

The LG soundbars are awesome! Full and rich sound! I bought this to go with a 32' TV for a bedroom. I own 2 LG soundbars and I'm completely convinced they are the best soundbars for the money! If you know me that is saying a lot, I work for a television network.

Stunning sound in the bedroom, now!
Posted by: ciderguy from: SE US on
Four years ago, I bought, what was then, a state of the art A/V system so that I could enjoy watching films in the living room. I've never quite been able to get comfortable in there. So I purchased a Sony 55" 4K Ultra HDTV, had it mounted in my bedroom and found the picture quality superb; but the sound? Meh...
Years ago, I had purchased a sort of wired "home theatre in a box" made by Samsung. It was so difficult to use that I simply trashed it after 3 months. I've never used a soundbar previously, but I had this installed more quickly than it took to unbox it and I put in my target sound-test Blu-ray disc (Moulin Rouge!) and began to play. The little-to-no sound had become spectacular. Spectacular!
I could have spent a fortune to get good sound from a traditional home theatre set-up, but this first experience has led me to believe that a soundbar and woofer are adequate – more than adequate – for sound in a bedroom.
I looked at different soundbars (I'm disabled, so ALL of my shopping is either online or picked up by my caregiver – awkward when shopping for items when subjectivity comes into play) but this sounds as if it may be amongst the finest available. I have my older LG HDTV in my living room now, a newish LG Blu-ray player in my bedroom, an older LG Blu-ray player in my living room, scads of other things made by LG, etc. I almost bought a 55" LG UHDTV but the Consumer Reports article gave the Sony brand much high ratings.
I can't recommend a more pleasant and simple to use soundbar. There may be others just as good but I can't imagine one better.

Great sound w/o lots of effort
Posted by: brhmt from: on
Integrates perfectly w/ the LG TV and provides excellent sound without a lot of wires or effort. Easy to set up to take the place of the TV speakers and it turns off an on automatically w/ the TV. Great bass effect and good coverage in a 19'x22' room w/ vaulted ceiling.
