"Buyer be aware" of...

This writer's review of the Microsoft Wireless Mouse 4000 begins (and continues) by comparing it to a past favorite of mine--the Microsoft Wireless Mouse "5000." Both models have blue track technology which can be used on almost any surface--except glass. Another great feature is that this model (just like the "5000) can work from up to 30 feet away. So many of the specifications offered by many sellers of this item state that it is good for up to 15 feet; however, I phoned Microsoft twice just to make sure and it is, in fact, good for up to 30 feet. I won't elaborate on "all" of the features during this product review; however, the advantage this "4000" model has over the Microsoft wireless 5000 model is that the 4000's Nano transceiver protrudes only some 1/4" once plugged into the computer; whereas, with the wireless 5000 model the Nano transceiver protrudes at least an inch after being plugged in. This is important to me as I always worry about bumping the 5000's Nano inadvertently. A lot of people would plug the Nano into a USB multi-port hub; however, I find with that configuration the mice "stutter" or don't respond as efficiently. Another great feature (similar to the 5000 mouse) is that the scroll wheel "rolls" smoothly rather than in ratchet style increments and when you are trying to zero in on a small area such as a line of a text it is much easier to achieve a precise location. It's super hard to find the Microsoft wireless mouse 5000 any more and I've seen them trending as high as $80 to $150 and Microsoft indicated to me that this wireless mouse 4000 will work just as well--only it is somewhat smaller in size. It is super comfortable to use! Lastly, the 5000 model requires two AA batteries and this one only requires one AA battery--less operational expense and lighter in weight. I use one for my office area and another while sitting in a Lazy Boy recliner several feet from a TV that is connected via HDMI cable to a laptop. Many thanks to Best Buy for offering a great sales price on this item!

Great mouse so far!
Posted by: OregonBruin from: Medford, OR on
This mouse is comfortable to use and a breeze to use on multiple surfaces. I use it regularly with my notebook on the couch and have rarely had a problem with the tracking. The blue light (as opposed to the mice with red lights) really seems to be more precise, in my usage. This color is a Best Buy exclusive, and it has held up well. There has been some fading on the bottom of what I believe is the serial number, which is expected since I am using a couch as a mouse pad.
It installed on Windows 7 extremely fast and with it comes a disc with the drivers and Microsoft Intellipoint software. Windows 7 downloaded the newer version when I hooked up the transceiver for the first time so the disc was unnecessary in my case.
This mouse has a button on the left which I have configured to go back, which is the default setting. I love this button as it makes web surfing even that more convenient. The buttons click quietly and it has a solid feel overall. I highly recommend this mouse. I have not had any issues with the battery dying quicker than the claimed 10 months of power, but I will not be surprised if it doesn't make it that long. I got this on sale for under $15. One last thing, although I leave the transceiver plugged in all the time, I do like how it can be stored in the mouse when needed.

Easy to install, easy to use.
I like the on/off button to save the battery. Beats the old storing the dongle to turn off the mouse.

I got this mouse about a year ago, and it continues to work great. The only issue I have had is that sometimes the scroll wheel decides to stop working when i turn my computer on, but that is fixed by simply unplugging and plugging in the USB receiver.
Overall, has worked great for pretty much anything!

The perfect mouse
Posted by: andrewb912 from: Chicago, IL on
This mouse is excellent! It looks good, feels good, and works perfect. I usually leave the USB receiver plugged into my laptop. When I travel, all I have to do is switch the mouse on and it connects instantly all the time. I also have a frosted glass desk at home that I use it on and it works great. I tried it on a clear glass surface also but it doesn't work well on that surface. The design of this mouse is great, it feels extremely comfortable when using it and has a solid, quality feel to it. I'm not always a fan of Microsoft products, but I have to give much credit to them for this one.

EXCELLENT Mouse! Might buy a second!
Posted by: Alfred from: Portland, OR on
Bought this mouse to use on my laptop to use for FPS gaming. Ended up being a really good mouse! I bought a netbook and ended up using it on that as well. Since it's a real good mouse, I might buy a second mouse of the same kind and use it on that. I like it a lot!
Wireless receiver fits on the underside of the mouse, which is convenient for traveling. Just make sure you don't lose it.
My mouse is white, not black, though.

It feels good except the middle click
Posted by: angoori from: VA on
It has a very quiet clicking noise. I also use a mouse pad with wrist resting on it, and the mouse size is very good. I could define many different tasks for all four keys. The software also lets me change the scrolling speed on both directions. The only thing that is annoying is the middle click that is hard to push and is noisy too. The software had some good feature in it too.

Great Mouse....for the first week
Posted by: cmedin82 from: Coon Rapids, MN on
This device was awesome at first, the one day out of the blue (each one did the same) I get a messages stating the USB device malfunctioned. I took the USB unit out of my laptop and it was so hot it almost burnt my hand. I tested several other devices in the same USB port and did not get the same results. I tried other USB ports with this mouse and it always overheats. I thought at first I got a bad mouse, returned and got another. 2 weeks later....same result. Thought maybe it was something I was doing. Bought a 3rd, made sure to take it out of each use...etc. Same result. Started researching and others are seeing the same thing. If it worked without malfunctioning, this would absolutely be the best wireless mouse I've ever owned, hence trying 3 of them...lol!

Cute Mouse but Extremely Terrible Transceiver Life
Posted by: NikkiG from: Newark, NJ on
I purchased this mouse for my Dell Inspiron laptop last year in the spring less than 6 months later, the transceiver overheated and failed to be recognized. I called microsoft since this mouse comes with a 3 year warranty, they sent me out another one in pink same thing, overheated in even less time than the first one. I am now debating ordering another one since it does indeed have a 3 year warranty but i'm also considering purchasing a logitech wireless mouse. This mouse sucks in a nutshell. The best part about it is that it's easy to use, great on battery life, and has great accuracy when it's working but the transceiver life is very short and I have heard and read this in multiple reviews so I know it's something with this product. So beware!

This mouse is comfortable in my hand, easy to use, and nice looking. Response to screen is great.
